Off My Mind: Will Sinestro as a Green Lantern Eventually Destroy the Corps?

With the Green Lanterns' greatest enemy serving as a member, how long can the Corps survive?

Comics often see major shake ups to add excitement and suspense to stories. One of the biggest prior to DC's 'The New 52' was the Green Lantern Corps' greatest enemy becoming a member. Sinestro was said to be one of the greatest Lanterns until he decided to take matters into his own hands. Seeing his position and power as a chance to rule over his planet, he was soon kicked out of the Corps and banished to the anti-matter universe for his subordination.

With the power of a yellow power ring, Sinestro faced off against the Green Lanterns and its newest member, Hal Jordan time and time again. In some ways, Sinestro and Hal were alike. Both were powerful Lanterns with a strong will and a level of stubbornness that would have them stand up against the Guardians of the Universe on several occasions.

Despite their years of differences and conflicts, Sinestro and Hal formed an alliance during the War of Light and Brightest Day. During the War of the Green Lanterns, it came down to Hal trying to defeat the rogue Guardian Krona. When Hal executed a fatal finishing blow, Sinestro found himself chosen to become a Green Lantern despite his protests and Hal Jordan was stripped of his power ring by the Guardians. Now that Sinestro is unwillingly a Green Lantern once again, what does this mean for the future of the Corps? Be sure to read Green Lantern #1 as there will be some minor spoilers below.

Being a Green Lantern isn't something you can volunteer for. Each power ring chooses its bearer based on their worthiness. During the War of the Green Lanterns, Mogo, under the influence of Krona, dispatched several new rings for new Lanterns to serve as pawns of Krona. In the aftermath, several took it upon themselves to relinquish their rings, knowing they were not truly worthy of the honor. If it's simply a matter of removing the ring, how come Sinestro is unable to do the same?

The Guardians of the Universe have spent some time trying to make sense of Sinestro being chosen once again. They are fully aware of the evils he's committed but are willing to accept that it must be fated that he was chosen. Ganthet is the only one that realizes the absurdity of allowing this to happen.

After some deliberation, Sinestro is allowed to leave Oa and protect his sector. The willingness of the Guardians to allow him to leave with perhaps the most powerful weapon in the universe is questionable. Have they finally lost their sense of right and wrong? Sinestro has abused the power before and, if anything, has become even more deadly than before. Sinestro hates the Green Lanterns. They might want to hold onto the idea that this was set in motion in order to offer him redemption but they are risking the lives of many in allowing this to play out.

Sinestro first act as a Green Lantern was to check up on his homeworld of Korugar. Will we see a repeat of the past? Can Sinestro resist the temptation of using his power ring to demand the planet lives under his leadership?

The bigger question is what will happen with the Sinestro Corps. We've seen the covers to issues #2 & 3 that show Sinestro at odds with them. The Sinestro Corps was created out of its hatred for the Green Lanterns. Now its founders is back to wearing green. Sinestro could use this opportunity to give his Corps an inside edge in finally defeating the Green Lanterns. Because the members of the Sinestro Corps aren't necessarily the most rational minds in the galaxy, will they just see Sinestro's new wardrobe as the ultimate betrayal. It would be easy to imagine a power struggle as someone else fights to take control of the Corps.

Sinestro will always do what he sees fit. There must be a reason that Sinestro was chosen to wear a green power ring once again. Despite Ganthets protests, the Guardians might actually be onto something. We've seen the ultimate villains turn over a new leaf and begin fighting for good. But if issue #1 shows us anything, Sinestro is still as deadly as ever, only now he has a green power ring to add to his arsenal.

Sinestro won't want to be a Green Lantern even if he did decide he wanted redemption. On the flip side, Hal Jordan wants nothing more but to be a Green Lantern once again. The Guardians are strongly against this as well. If Sinestro and Hal form an alliance once again to each get what they desire, what will that mean for the Guardians and the Green Lantern Corps? Having two of the universe's most strong willed individuals work together could mean great things or it could result in the end of things as we know them.
