Off My Mind: New Wonder Woman Vs. Old Wonder Woman

Will we see the return of the Wonder Woman we all know?

No Caption Provided
Ever since Wonder Woman got a make over and new direction, readers have not been sure what to think. I've been a Wonder Woman reader since the 80s and while I do like her, I wouldn't say I was a die hard fan. When news broke about Wonder Woman's new costume and that she'd be on the run from some mysterious group, I was okay with that. In comic books, things may change but they (almost) always revert back to their old ways.

Reading the current J. Michael Straczynski run, I've been wondering what the heck is going on. I referred to this as being "Ultimate" Wonder Woman as Marvel has their Ultimate line. It was this image you see here from The Flash #6 that mentioned a time paradox involving Wonder Woman. Apparently I missed mention of the Gods changing the timeline for their own reason which could involve the their survival and/or the survival of Earth. Am I the only one that missed this explanation?

Even though Straczynski is leaving the book and Phil Hester will continue using JMS' notes and outlines, how long until we see the return of the Wonder Woman we all know? Should we see a return of the old Wonder Woman?
 == TEASER ==
  Which look is better?
 Which look is better?
For the four issues that we've seen so far, I haven't been able to decide if I like the new direction or not. I'd like to think that JMS had a nice big plan for the character. I just wasn't seeing it so far. Straczynski intended to stay on for at least twelve issues so we're not even half way through his vision.

If it's just a matter of the "timeline" being mucked around with, that can easily be reversed...at least as easy as it is to change time in comics. I can't say I really like that excuse though. "Let's give Wonder Woman a new start in her own timeline." Does this mean we wouldn't see her interact with the other heroes since she doesn't know them in this timeline? Do they even exist here? Does Wonder Woman still exist in the regular DC timeline? In the recent Justice League of America/The 99 mini series, Wonder Woman is along side her fellow teammates in her new costume. This just makes me more confused. Regardless, if Batman could make it through when Darkseid sent him on his journey through time, let's hope Wonder Woman can make it through this mess as well.

I don't have a problem with the costume change. She could alternate between the two looks for all I care. I just don't know who this Wonder Woman is in the current comics. Normally I would support a story trying something new but I don't see the point of creating a new timeline/direction just to have everything revert back to normal in the end. This might be interesting to some readers but with each issue, I'm finding myself caring less and less. Wonder Woman can be a tough sell. Straczynski, Simone and Rucka are great writers but the title has always struggled in trying to reach comic readers. Maybe it's reluctance on readers' part to really get into Wonder Woman. It isn't necessary to push a reset button and start Wonder Woman all over outside the DC Universe just to make her accessible to new readers.

So who's with me? Let's put out the call to the "Gods" to stop these timeline shenanigans and bring back the Wonder Woman we all know. There needs to be a focus on that character rather than try to reinvent her. Once she's back, then we can talk about what she should be wearing.

I conducted a random survey to a few people at school and asked them if they knew who...
1 Clark Kent
2. Steve Rogers
3. Bruce Wayne
4. Tony Stark
5. Diana Prince
6. Peter Parker
was, and nobody knew Wonder Woman.

Great article :D
I wonder why JMS is leaving?
I personally like the new costume, the old one was classic, but Wonder Woman needs to be shock up.

I dont really mind the new costume, though if she lost the jacket it would be better, did JMS really change her personality that dramatically?  I havent really read much about this new wonder woman.

@MintBerryCrunch:

They knew Steve Rogers but not Diana? Interesting. I would have thought Steve Rogers to be the more obscure of the two in terms of awareness. WW had her own TV show and everything.

Keep in mind I am no Wonder Woman expert, the following is just my take on her....

I think what she needs, that most of the others have (other than Iron Man), is a defining villain (as someone else mentioned). You think Superman, Lex Luthor is what people think his main enemy is. Batman has the Joker. Captain America has the Red Skull. Peter Parker has the Green Goblin. Iron Man doesn't have any one set arch enemy, but he does have 2 blockbuster movies, so he's excused.

Wonder Woman is in the same boat as Iron Man used to be, except her TV show was in the 70's and she's never had a blockbuster movie to offset her lack of a specific arch enemy.

I don't think it matters what you dress her up as, what is most important is the villain she fights, and it matters why she's fighting him/her, and what she is protecting. It's all good to beat up the God of War, but the audience isn't going to care that much if what she is protecting isn't something the audience cares about.

For this reason she needs to have her own city to protect with a cast of memorable backup characters that need help and can help her. The cast and stories need to be varied and above that, effect (even if in small ways) other thangs happening in the DCU. She also needs guest stars to pad her stories until she finds her own legs. Batman is a good choice since they play very well off each other.

I only wish Batman didn't have so many books thanks to the new Batman Inc. thing, but that's another story.

The change is only temporary, guys. She already knows that reality is jacked up, and is trying to fix it.

She's the original version in other books.

I like that someone finally gave WW a pair of pants and a jacket.
It must have been fairly cold in outer space in her older outfit or breezy during the winter.

Honestly I don't care about Wonder Woman and I am sure most people don't. They just know it is a status and out of the big 3, killing her off and handing that mantle over would be the best bet. I did try to get into it when there was a reboot before with the Dodsons and the artwork pulled me in. I think there is a way to do it but it is so hard to get through it all. DC's history and continuity makes it hard to tell stories period. Kill her off, start fresh and then just do a Wonder Woman OGN like they are doing with Superman and Batman. I think Wonder Woman stories can be told in out of continuity and make sense.

I really don't have a problem with the change....the only thing that bothers me is that it seems like her change is acknowledged by the rest of the DCU but at the same time not....all I want to know is where does this new Wonder Woman fit in with the rest of the DCU and how are they explaining it to the rest of the characters....why hasn't Donna or Cassie been included in this change as well...why is it exclusive to Wonder Woman

I read a post earlier that was surprised, as I was, to see that people knew steve rogers. I am thinking that is because of his new movie. I do think, however, that your list of names was a bit unfair. They are all popular characters who had big movies. Of course the general population is going to know them. With that in mind, I think the only female C that would be know by name is Jean Grey due to the Xmen movies. Try your survey again with Ororo Monroe, Emma Frost, Selina Kyle, Kara El, Diana Prince and I am sure you will get the same result only for the whole list.

Both kind of work, but the newest one has more dignity to it, I always had a problem with the old one knowing who designed it, so it does make me glad that we're finally moving past it.

I just want more skin again because naturally nudity or without armor makes you stronger. Whats the whole point of armor and clothes there freaking gods and goddesses. normal citizens cover up and wear armor because where afraid to reveal are sexuality and don't stand up enough like the superheroes we all fantasize about. Now we want to make them more human than ever or where clothes like us screw you.

@angryamazon: Nobody got everything right when I did my mini survey, but  absolutely no one got Wonder Woman, some people guessed Catwoman and Supergirl because they figured out that I was looking for Super Heroes, but nobody got Wonder Woman at all.  Someone mistook it Princess Diana of Wales and then switch the conversation to Prince William's wedding thats when I lost everyone's interest!!!

Personally, I think we'll see Diana become what Donna Troy is/was/might still be.

One of the few DC characters that remembers another version of herself.

Of course DC could always choose to end this 'The All New' thing before anything comes of it and retcons it into the dark and cold cellars of abandoned ideas. Which would be a shame since it'd be cool if Diana did remember this version of herself after she's properly re-integrated with DC's normal timeline.

I must say that I consider JMS a very talented writer, I love many of his works both for comics and television. Unfortunanlty this time I think that he really screwed it.
It's no mystery that any author has a personal view of each character and, given the chance, will try to enforce this view upon the readers. But even so, I think that this new version really doesn't work for two big reasons:

  • The whole thing seem to float between being in continuity and being out of continuity, which is kind of lame
  • Wonder Woman is supposed to be a highly positive character, she represent hope as much as Superman (if not more). Her current incarnation as a hard-assed warrior isn't out of the character - she is an amazon - but seem too prone to shift into the psycho feminist avenger, which is something I really don't like

Wonder Woman has the questionable honor of being one of the most difficult - if not the most difficult - mainstream character to write.
  • She's extremly powerful, making any physical challenge very difficult to write
  • She lacks a credible nemesis, or even a credible rogue gallery
  • She has a cultural frame of reference which is alien for almost all of us
  • She is supposed not just to fight the bad guys, but trying to actually change the world for better

One of the things that make Iconic characters Iconic are the costumes they wear and which we all know and love. This latest attempt at re-vamping Wonder Woman by giving her a new costume will undoubtedly go the way of "Electric Superman" from a decade or so ago. It will last a maximum of 2 years IMO and she will once again be wearing her traditional outfit.  Can anyone name a major character who got a "New Costume" that permanently worked? Even Spidey returned to his traditional Red and Blue after we found out the secret of the innovative Black suit!
This is just the latest attempt by one of the "big two" to mess around with one of their Iconic characters-  as if change necessarily always means change for the better. Not only have we had the "Electric" Superman mentioned above, but Iconic characters like Bruce Wayne and Steve Rogers have recently been "killed off" (Ha Ha - as if we didn't know they would be back!) in some vain attempt to temporarily boost sales which were perhaps in decline or breathe fresh "life" into flagging story lines.
Let's face it folks, Iconic characters - and Wonder Woman is one of those - especially those whose costumes are patriotic in design - will always be known by those costumes.

I'm willing to give JMS the benefit of the doubt so far, but my hunch was that it was just another marketing stunt from the get go.  New costume, new drama and a lot of changes for the sake of "betterifying" the character.

I think WW is one of the hardest DC characters to write for.  She's a true-blue golden age paragon-type character.  Not exactly the type of material for people who want their heroes dark, flawed, dark, gritty, dark and full of angst and nasty stuff.  So they try to wedge that into the WW mythos, usually by taking away Themiscyra, killing off her mother or a bunch of other amazons.  And that's the feeling I got when I read the first issue of JMS.  Nothing really new, just trying to drag WW down to the level of your average Spiderman or Wolverine.  Drama, drama, drama !!!

I think DC and Marvel are big enough to have a wider variety of characters and story types rather than just try to fit the square peg into the round hole.  So give WW her golden age credit and make her stories about heroics, myth and being a great role-model.  Let her be an icon, don't bother giving her more street cred, she's way beyond that.  Some heroes are HEROES in the classic sense, no need to go fix that formula because somebody in marketing made a study that concludes that dark, darker, darkest is the only way to go.

But I remain cautiously optimistic that JMS or whomever is taking over will complete the arc in a satisfactory manner.  At worst we will look back at this a decade or two from now and say "what where they thinking ???"

Look, Wonder Woman needs to move out of the Comics and into movie and TV or she will never be anything of consequence. If a TV wonder woman or Movie Wonder Woman are successful then her comics story line would certainly fall into place. Comic books are not very big money makers by themselves.

The whole issue with the old uniform is one of the major reasons why she is not on screen yet. Its so ICONIC American and reveling that it would not translate into a serious movie or TV series...especially on an international level (Think CATWOMAN movie!) since everyone will focus on the costume and not the character.

JMS and a host of others have been trying to solve this issue but as I said before her costume is too iconic to change for a serious movie or TV show.

I completely agree.  I feel like comics have internalized this bizarre traditional tendency where they don't ever allow themselves to progress or make risks.  It's like there's a giant fail-safe button on the side of all the comic owners' offices that says "In case of change failure" which they hit within a matter or issues.  I think one of the best examples of this is Spawn immediately after Spawn takes over hell.  At that point, I was interested in seeing an plot line like Fable 3 where we would see Spawn as a monarch who had to make much bigger decisions, but instead Cogliostro took over and threw him out and we were essentially back to square one.

The same thing happens every time a character dies.  In truth, I don't want to see the characters go, but the dealings with death are often incredibly immature.

I did also want to quickly say that I think Wonder Woman's costume change is fantastic from a feminist point of view.  Too often comics seem to hold the opinion that this is a boy's adventure club and women can come in too, but only if they present themselves in overtly sexual manners.  Often when I look at the female characters all I can think is, "you can't possibly fight crime in that."  Emma Frost, who often ACTUALLY wears a corset, exemplifies this problem.  Wonder Woman was also pretty close to this, fighting crime in what looked like an old-fashioned swim-suit along side superman who, despite his lack of understanding of where underwear go, left only his face and fists exposed.  I think a lot of female characters show a great deal of female empowerment by getting out there and kicking ass, but it's fine that they are able to do so in a more pragmatic way--by wearing pants, shirts and other kinds of necessary protection.  This doesn't mean that women (or even men for that matter) can't be sexy in comics; it just means they deserve to be treated fairly which may mean NOT going onto the battle field in a suit so tight we can see the full outline of their breasts or a in a suit so lacking that we can hardly call it a suit at all.  Just take a moment to think of the women in the military and how appalling it would be if we demanded they dress in a sexual way instead of a reasonable way.

@NightFang:  no man, I'm afraid. I respect your opinion if you like one or the other, but personally the new costume and the new back story are too much at one time. The new back story, in my opinion so no one judge, sucks badly, and so does the new outfit. I'm more into a wonder woman that looks INTENSE, not some teeny Megan Fox girl.  I like the DC New Frontier Wonder Woman, or the armor Wonder Woman has in the trailer for DCUO, why would she have special Amazonian hipster pants?

What gets me is two things:
1. Wonder Woman has ALWAYS been centered around Greek myth.
2. If this is all going on, how do Cassandra Sandsmark and Donna Trot exist in their current fashion? If the Amazons didn't exist ... neither would those two.
Grr! Give me back my old Wonder Woman! Build up her rogues gallery (Circe, Ares, Giganta, Silver Swan ... they're a good start.)

I see the new WW costume as simply as a slight change--like Batman wearing all black versus the grey and blue. I agree, the time line issues do make things confusing.

I don't even know the difference between the "old" wonder woman and "new" other than the new costume which is a huge improvement. I don't know whats so hard to understand about what JMS was trying to do.... He did not change wonder womans personality outside of what she has been since 1986. All he did was change the time line so we see what would happen if Diana did not grow up on Themyiscara. So far all her Actions are consistent with who she has been since 1986.

She just has not learned her mothers teachings...

Anyway if this whole thing ends in a much needed costume update I would be so happy.....because it would make sense for TV and movie Wonder Woman

I'll have to say that the new direction isn't working for me either.  I initially used the new direction as my official starting point for reading Wonder Woman.  Now, I'd just like to see the old version back.
