Off My Mind: How is the Batcave Still a Secret?

The Batcave is a big and amazing place. How does Batman keep people from discovering it?

No Caption Provided
When it comes to secret headquarters, Batman does it with style. If you're not completely familiar with the details of the Batcave or know its secrets, you can check out our video to become an expert. With Batman spending the majority of his time in a hidden location, it has to have everything he would want or need. The Batcave is conveniently located underneath Wayne Manor. This helps him balance his time between Bruce Wayne and Batman. Luckily for Bruce, he had his huge family fortune to assist in creating and maintaining all his headquarter needs.

The Batcave is indeed an amazing place. What is more amazing is the fact that Batman has been able to keep its location a secret for all these years. We know that the cave has always been there geographically but Batman had to bring in all his equipment and set everything up to meet all of his needs. We have to have some suspension of disbelief when it comes to characters having superpowers. Are we also supposed to have that same train of thought when it comes to creating and keeping the Batcave a secret?

Vision

When Bruce decided to become a crimefighter, he most likely recalled the time of his youth when he first discovered the caves beneath the Manor. Did Bruce have any assistance, besides Alfred, in setting everything up? You have to give him credit for having such a grand sense of vision to see his future high tech base in the dank and dark caves.

Power

Most likely the first thing he would have to do is set up some form of power. I would assume he uses several generators rather than hook up to the same power grid that Wayne Manor is using. Running all the lights and Bat-computers would use a lot of electricity and it would even be hard for an eccentric billionaire to explain the power usage to the electric company. With several generators, he would then have to ensure the entire cave had proper wiring. The last thing he would want to do is have to search for an outlet or extension cord when trying to hook up another crime solving gadget.

Moving Day

What about the actual equipment in the cave? How did he bring in everything? There was  a depiction of Bruce and Dick moving the giant penny in the back of a truck. With the Batmobile having access to a nearby road, we know he as to be able to use that same exit/entrance to bring in any equipment or computers he incorporates into the set up.

Equipment

Where does he actually get all of his equipment and supplies? Bruce couldn't simply go to an Apple store to buy the latest computer to convert into the Bat-computer. Did he go to Radio Shack and buy out the store's inventory? Did he design everything himself? Batman is a highly intelligent man. Yes he spent the years after his parents' death training himself in every form but did that include studying every form of technology? He may have had Wayne Enterprises design some of his equipment (as seen in the movies) but that would involve a lot of paperwork and some tricky maneuvering to make sure no one caught on. Even after Cataclysm, Batman had to rebuild portions of the cave. Was this all hidden in the paperwork for repairing any damages to Wayne Manor?

Geological Records

You would think there would be some sort of geological records of the land around Wayne Manor. After all, if frontiersman Jeremy Coe knew about the cave (as shown way back in Detective Comics #205). Are there records of the caves beneath? People would have to know what the geography around Gotham City is like. There has always been suspicion that Batman would have to be a rich man to have all his gadgets. People would have to wonder where he actually kept everything. If people knew that there was a huge system of caves underneath the home of Gotham's richest man, it wouldn't take long to put two and two together. Unless Bruce Wayne manage to buy out any geological records.

Loose Lips Sink Ships

The biggest concern would be entrusting others with the secret. Batman trusts very few individuals. There aren't many people that take the war on crime as serious as he does. He most likely has every form of security and detection available to ensure he is not being followed by individuals or by electronic means. How many times has Spider-Man discovered the villains' hideout by simply planting a Spider-Tracer on them? That wouldn't work with Batman but would someone like...Stephanie Brown be as careful as Batman? He also has to make sure he doesn't piss off anyone that knows the secret. What about the hordes of assassins employed by Ra's al Ghul? Do they all sign a confidentiality agreement when working for the League of Assassins? Has there every been a member that manage to quit? What's to stop them or any other person that knows the location from spreading the word? Besides Ra's ah Ghul, other villains such as Bane and David Cain also know about the cave. Batman is lucky that he has noble enemies that won't spill his secrets or use them against him.

Batman is lucky in several ways. He has a super-cool hangout and he is able to prevent the world from discovering it. Batman is a smart guy and the cave has the utmost means of security measures. Perhaps Batman has also made arrangements with someone like Zatanna to set up some magical defenses as well. Let's hope he continues to manage keeping the Batcave a secret from everyone.

As for the Enemies that know about it. Ra's is to noble as you mentioned to freely give away such knowledge. And for Bane I think he doesn't say anything because it give him an upper-hand over his competition. If you wanna be the one to beat the Bat, why give anyone else a shot.

Interesting article, though nowhere near as brilliant as Cracked.coms Batcave article from a few weeks ago.

About the LOA, think of it like a cult...yeah, let someone quit. We saw how well that worked for Bruce in BB...good luck to anyone else who isn't Batman getting out alive.
And I believe it's Batman #691 where it was revealed that Bruce kept some kind of magical barriers on the cave to keep people from teleporting in. But otherwise interesting article, idk if anyone else remembers the episode of "The Batman" where it's revealed that he left the binary of his computer all over the titanium supports of the cave...so that by the time his machine died they could still have access to his programs and use it to defeat any threats from his time. That show
had it's moments...

OK forgive me for nerding out but
1 there is more than one batcave but the main one is super protected even from teleporters and magic. Even Martian Manhunter couldn't read him while in the cave. It's actually by chance in a mystic spot as well. This is explained in Batman 688-689 when Two Face discovers the cave by getting a teleporter to trace a piece of bat equipment back to its origin which turned out to be the batcave and teleport him there. This was while Dick was filling in for Bruce. Two Face knew it wasn't the real batman because of how he fought and because he smiled and allowed himself to be filmed.  It was also talked about before how the computer system was not only encrypted mechanically but mystically. It was in one of the superman-batmans.

2 They generate their own power so that's not an issue.
3 Wayne corps provides a lot of the technological research as well as engineering. That's how he built the eye in the sky as well for the Justice League.  He is a multi-billionaire.

My question is how could someone as smart as say the Riddler not figure it out? A person with those kind of gadgets is either a billionaire or financed by one. How many billionaires are 6 foot 4 and live in Gotham with a build like Batman? Only Bruce Wayne.  Also how hard would it be to trace the bat mobile to at least the general area either by timing its response times to different spots or by following it home?

@Blackestnight: one could argue that Riddler purposely does not look for the cave. Because then who would he get to test his Riddles?

If anyone knew about his cave, I'm pretty sure they would leave him alone. My first thought would be, "He lives in a cave? and it has bats in it? and he knows Linux? He must be one badass dude."

I think he has had Zatanna cast spells upon the batcave to keep people from finding it. Dick needs to really step up his security measures. Thats one of the things he has been lacking since taking on the cowl and creating his own bat-base. He needs more security measures.

I love dick Grayson being Batman but he seems like he just isnt wising up quick enough. He has been in this line of work for probably 2/3 of his life. I know that bruce has kind of been protecting him for alot of the time but while he was in Bludhaven he was on his own and now that he is back in Gotham it seems like he has been slacking. I hate watching act like a teenager again, needing Bruce to come in and save him. I dont remember him saving bruce that many times when Dick was Robin and it seems like Damien saves Dick almost as much as Dick saves Damien.

did you know the batcave exists because in the original batman tv show they didnt have a hangar set, but they had a cave set from another show, so they changed his secret hanger into the "bat cave"? the idea caught on and now its obviously a staple of batman

@Caligula:  OK Victor Freeze then or any of his genius level villains. I mean, they guy has a flying jet that turns into a boat. Not many billionaires in Gotham and not many with the same rather massive dimensions as Batman. And Wayne tech built the watch tower. But I guess that's a secret too although many villains know about it like Luthor. Lex has got to know who Batman is.

@Blackestnight:  I think I can argue that Freeze is not a rogue that is focused on beating Batman. He more focused on the World or at least Gotham. And Batman is inconsequential to him. Batman is not his goal.

@DEGRAAF: At least with the Batbunker, they could've built it themselves. The cave is a natural formation and so many people have been there. You'd think Alfred sells tickets for tours or something.

lol true. I say give it time. Two-Face only seemed to have found it after Dick took over. I think it will take a couple of mistakes before Dick figures out how far he has to go to be completely safe. Do you think cat woman knows of the Bat Bunker yet? She knew where the cave is right?

@G-Man:  It is not far fetched that people in Gotham dont know about the caves , there are many caves around the world that their locations are kept secret by the authorities , mainly because in such caves there are beautiful rock formations  and the sort , if a lot of people enters them , due to climate change , they would be destroyed. Also do you know of caves near you? I have lived in many places and never heard of caves nearby. Also due to the caves being beneath Waynes Mannor , it is a private property. About the funding and the tech , dude Bruce owns Waynes' Enterprises he doesn't need to justify himself , and hasn't he already admitted to be funding Batman to the public?

There was actually an article on this comedy website called Cracked that talked about this very topic and how hard it would realistically be to keep the Batcave a secret....I don't recommend reading it if you want to keep your suspension of belief; but it's a pretty funny/cool read.....

So then cave enthusiasts and the authorities would know about the cave system of the Batcave.  Most cave systems have been discovered (especially one so large) and yes, many of them are relatively unknown to the general population, but cavers do know about them (I was a member of Grotto - National speleological society - for a few years).  It would be very hard to believe that the the cave system would not be known - and if that's the case then spelunkers would be trying to get into them all the time  (they pay little attention to the distinction of private vs public property) and would therefore know about the Batcave, and that's actually a pretty large tightly knit network of people who all keep each other well informed.

Several points of the article has been explored in various way duirng years of (dis)continuity. As far as recall these are some of the most important.

Power
The cave does run on autonomous generators (as does Oracle's clocktower) I don't remember if it was even specified which kind of generators, but consider this: Batman helped projecting the JLA HQ on the Moon, I guess he had some of the JLA tech replicated on smaller scale for personal use.

Equipment
This has been Batman's Achille's heel for a long time. In his first appearence Ra's al-Ghul discovered Batman secret ID by examining the accounting reports from Wayne Industries, Lucius Fox was about to do the same. Currently Bruce came out with a solution of sort, hiding everything in plain sight, by admitting he has funded Batman for a long time.

Geological Records
This is another point were being a Wayne came in handy, Bruce's family owned the area were Wayne's manor was built for a long time. Which means that it's possible that no accurate survey with modern equiment was ever made.

Granted each of this point requires a certain amount of suspension of disbelieve, but a lot less than the Fortress of Solitude requires.

Something that always bugged me was when the comics and cartoons tried to explain things with ideas like Batman has a mute guy living in the Batcave who would fix his car and weapons and stuff.  Or Batman takes his car and vehicles to a mechanic that the Penguin eventually is able to trace back to Batman.  To me Batman would do all those things himself.

The the thing that would be important to do is to make sure all the bat droppings are taken care of. Cause they do not smell good at. They're very potent almost like it stings the nostrils when smelling it.
