Off My Mind: Could Damian Wayne Kill the Joker?

Chances are it would never happen but what would the repercussions be?

Death of the Family is underway in just about every Batman-related comic now on sale. The focus of the story is Joker feels Batman is too tied down with people he cares about. He has too many people in his inner circle. Too many he would consider part of his family. Joker feels this has been a distraction. He doesn't think the Court of Owls should've gotten the drop on Batman. It's because he's too unfocused that Batman isn't being the best he could be.

Throughout the crossover issues, Joker has been targeting those individuals. With some, there is an existing grudge, such as with Jason Todd or Barbara Gordon. Not all of the family members necessarily have a personal reason to want Joker stopped aside from the fact that he's a dark and twisted person.

No Caption Provided

We've had the discussion before about whether or not Batman should kill the Joker. We've even heard from creators on the topic. But Damian Wayne is another story. He has killed, even after meeting his father. The likelihood of Damian actually killing Batman's greatest enemy in today's comic isn't very likely but what if it did happen? Looking at some of the advanced solicits, you could almost make the case for it happening.

== TEASER ==

There is going to be some sort of tragic event. The information for BATMAN INCORPORATED #9 mentions Batman having to be on the run. The question is also raised whether or not he's a murderer. What if (and this is a huge 'what if') Damian follows through with his instincts and kills Joker?

No Caption Provided

Damian has killed before so why would this be any different? When he first arrived at Gotham, he killed a mobster, chopped off his head and brought it to the Batcave. He also killed Nobody, Batman's old associate and son of Henri Ducard. The first death was before Damian "knew better." It was before he agreed to follow his father's ways of not killing. With Nobody, it could be considered self defense.

If Damian were to kill Joker, there wouldn't be many people that would get upset. Regardless of how horrible Joker is, there would still be some fallout if a vigilante killed someone that should be locked up. The argument could be made that Joker is simply mentally insane and just needs the right kind of treatment. He would still have civil rights and shouldn't be killed in cold blood.

Let me reiterate once more that this is not likely to happen.

No Caption Provided

If it did, what would Batman's reaction be? It's been argued that in some way, Batman does enjoy the thrill of the hunt with Joker. That's why he keeps sending him to Arkham Asylum when everyone knows Joker can pretty much come and go as he pleases. Would he be saddened on some deep lower level? Would he be relieved that the Joker's madness has finally ended? Would he have a problem with his own son breaking their vow of not killing?

Because Batman is always "prepared," he has at least half a dozen, if not more, ways to take an opponent down. In a final confrontation with Joker, he should be able to subdue him without going to extreme measures. If one of his soldiers, his own son, crossed the line and just killed Joker, it would't go over too well. Killing is not what a Robin is supposed to do. What would this do to their interactions as father and son and as the Dynamic Duo if Robin put a stop to Batman's greatest enemy. This is something that Batman has never been able to do.

There could also be the possibility that it isn't Robin that kills Joker but instead, Bruce Wayne's son, Damian. If it happened when he was in his civilian guise, Batman might feel the need to step in to protect Damian. That could be why Batman is suspected of being a murderer in BATMAN INCORPORATED #9.

The fact is, Damian can't kill Joker. As Batman's greatest villain, it was impressive that DC managed to keep him out of stories for over a year in the New 52. There were some stories involving him (or involving his face) but he was allowed to be off for a year making his own plans. You can't kill a villain as great as the Joker. Comic book characters that die always have a way to come back but if this were to happen, it would have to be completely clear that Damian actually killed him. There could't be a disappearing body into the abyss or falling off a cliff where Joker could miraculously survive somehow.

No Caption Provided

The bigger question is, could Damian kill Joker if he really set out to do so. Could he overcome Joker's twisted mind and put a permanent stop to him? What would Batman's reaction be to this? This is something we'll probably never know but is interesting to think about.

I think it would be sloppy for Snyder to tell a story where the Joker is killed by anyone. We all know that the Joker would be brought back eventually so it doesn't have much kick. I also think that if the means of eventually bringing the Joker back from the dead is to say this arc featured some other psychopath who simply stole the Joker's face that the overall story would be weakened. Knowing that the Joker will be brought back and the end of this arc would be retconned should be reason enough for Snyder to stick the landing in a way that leaves the Joker alive.

As to how the Bat family would react to Damian killing the Joker? I suppose they would react the same way they have the last couple times. Everyone will be indignant in the moment and afterward it will mostly be forgotten except for the occasional "but Damian's a killer" remarks. What long term repercussions have their been from Damian killing the Ghost or killing Nobody? Nothing big really. Bruce yells at him maybe tells him he can't patrol tonight.

My final thought on the solicits featuring Bruce as a murderer: If Damian kills someone and Bruce can organize the situation so that Bruce himself seems guilty then why can't he equally organize the situation so that it looks like it was done in self defense and purchase the best defense money can buy. Realistically, Bruce has the money and intelligence to kill anyone he pleases and get away with it as disturbing as that might sound. Maybe that doesn't make for a very dramatic story and I know he's been on the run for murder before but honestly if the Batman were real the possibility of a murder charge would be just another easily evaded death trap.

Damian certainly could if pushed to the edge, but there's no way DC will kill off their most popular villain. I think it would be too anti-climactic for Robin to just kill Batman's greatest enemy, even though I wouldn't mind Joker gone for a while.

I say he could! I'd be thrilled if Damian pulled it off, he's like a mini-Punisher at times, but he's controlled by Batman, with Punisher thoughts quite often.

Could He? ABSOLUTELY.

Should he? Well, SOMEONE should.

Will he? I don't think the powers that be will allow it to happen. At least not in the mainstream universe. And even if he does kill the Joker, we all know the Joker would come back..... In comics, only Uncle Ben stays dead.

Damian should kill Joker... I know I'll get a lot of hate for this, but I think Joker...isn't...interesting anymore... maybe it's his ambiguity that makes him interesting, that we don't know what he's thinking...or what he's capable of...or what he'll do next...but I think that also makes him kind of boring because...he's been around for so long...and there's been almost no progress or even revelation to his character...he can only repeat the process so many times before it gets stale...the current incarnation of him is great and all...but the character should really be put to rest soon...and it shouldn't be anything grand...because it would really make his death something sad...

This. Do what his father isn't willing to despite all the pain and misery Joker's caused to the Bat family and Gotham in general. I would buy 10 copies to see Damian chop his head off.

i dont think this issue comes down to 'COULD', i think its all boils down to 'SHOULD' he kill the Joker. i disagree with the fact that Joker should still have civil rights, thats a load of b.s. at this point. take away everything he's ever done to the Bat squad, take away everything hes ever done to Gotham, or other heroes, or the world at large. just looking at this 'event' alone is enough for me to think they should at least try to end the Joker. the guy starts off he whole thing by rehashing his old crimes but turning the dial up to 11, all those ppl under the water was nuts, and id say drastic even for the J-man.

obviously they aren't going to kill the Joker, or at least not permanently. but if this were a more 'realistic' world, they put him down... Atticus Finch style

The Joker can't really die in this mainstream continuity. I'd like to see it as an elseworlds comic.

I really really like the joker but i would be ok with Damien killing him for good never to be seen or heard from again. This would change the dynamic in the Bat family. People would take sides. They have all thought about killing before and most of them have thought about killing the joker but i would think Bruce, Dick, and Tim would be against it (even though i think Tim killed in the first arc or two of the New 52 Teen Titans series). Damien , Babs, and Jsaon would all be for it after all the torment in their lives caused by him (well minus Damien he's just a messed up little psycho)

I wouldnt want it to be Jason or Babs with each having their own reasons why...

Babs- Maybe she somehow gains that advantage and has the opportunity to kill him but ultimately i think she would hesitate losing the chance or dropping the crow bar (yes if he is killed it should be with a crow bar and maybe an explosion lol) deciding that no matter how badly he deserves it she cant take his life bc she is better then that.

Jason- His is simple this has been hanging over him since his return in the Pre-New 52. Is he good enough to return the favor to the Joker? We know he is a very talented fighter and is willing to kill but his anger gets in his way and if he lets the Joker mess with his head that he loses focus and just goes into a fit of rage like he is known to do then the Joker will always win. Im not saying Jason wouldnt get a few shots in but i think he would ultimately fail.

I think letting Damien do it would have Babs questioning her stance on the subject and Jason being angry it wasnt him and that he will never know whether or not he was good enough to take the Joker down. This would also give Damien something to brag about. He was just talking about how he is the best robin and he tried fighting them all to prove it but now he can say he is the only robin to get the better of the Joker and the only person to ever kill the joker

I would love to see Damian behead the Joker. After all he's done he really has it coming this time. Even if it means that Damian "actually kills him". Thus the only way to bring Joker back would be a pit reincarnation storyline. As silly as reincarnation always is, i'd like to see Damian end Joker, and the story that takes place from that. :O

I wouldn't mind if he killed him. He'd probably just get brought back with a Lazarus Pit or the Talon formula or something. Fortunately Damian can't kill the Joker because now he has super strength, super endurance, super intellect, super insomnia, advanced technology and cybernetics. As much as I'm digging Snyder's run I'm running out of love for the character in a big way. I think I'm more interested in what he'll do with Nigma when the next arc starts.

What!?!?!?!

I would love this and they could call it "Robins" like they were going to have that comic based solely on the previous and current version of Robin working together

You know, it'd make all the sense of the world if ANYone of the Bat Family killed the Joker. They have PLENTY of reasons to do so and I honestly think losing one life to save millions would pay off... especially when we're talking about the greatest freak ever. (if we're going to use logic, that's a good point)

The only reason none of them does so is because Joker is a popular character that delivers great story-arcs...so the writers have to come up with excuses, like morals or Joker's great power of manipulation (my solution for that: shoot him before he starts talking; yeah, Red Hood, I'm talking to you), to avoid his death.

I can't help thinking it's quite ridiculous, but, then again, we're talking about comic books...they need characters that sell.

I feel like killing the Joker would be the end to the Batman story line, I mean yes, other villians have managed to surface over the years. Bringing the Bat family new threats, but how many of them have survived all the trials and tribulations that the Joker has? I think this is the reason the Joker hasn't been killed ALREADY. Not because Batman won't because of a self-righteous code. But simply because in the Bat's subconscious, he has an insatiable desire for a formidable opponent. Even if it isn't on a physical level. Which is another point, the Joker seems to be the only one that can match the Bat's intellect. If Damion we're to kill the Joker, it would be interesting what new villian would surface to take the Joker's place, if that is even possible.

Damien killing the Joker would elevate his character beyond "angry son of Batman" and into a character who's capable of making his own choices and bending his own codes, which is something that none of the current Batfamily have been able to do. All of the current Bats have this "What would Batman do!?" mentality that makes them all seem like children constantly pining for their "father"'s approval, and Damien can evolve beyond that. Kind of ironic considering he's Batman's only real son. Also, SOMEONE needs to kill the Joker because he's a horrible, boring, useless character. The only time Joker succeeds is when everyone around him becomes inexplicably stupid. I guess that's a product of his "super-sanity" -- he can seemingly make the writers turn his opponents into idiots for issues at a time. Damien killing Joker is essentially taking two flat characters and potentially getting one amazing character out of it -- a more mature, independent Damien. The Batfamily might scorn him for it, but he would probably become the most successful vigilante in Gotham City in the process. Perhaps the real question isn't "What would the Batfamily think?", it's "What would the League of Assassins think?" Would Damien's actions be considered a triumph in their eyes? Would they become more prominent in the story?

Dick Grayson has killed the Joker in actual continuity. No Elseworld, no dream sequence, he just beat him to death in the Last Laugh storyline. Joker was resuscitated to prevent Nightwing from being a murderer.

So the question, OP, is not whether Damian or any other Robin can kill the Joker. I'm sure they could. It's whether DC is going think up some contrived way to keep the Joker hanging around.

This would be great.

But if not I wouldn't mind Damian taking him out. Honestly him being absent for a year made me forget how Horrible he can be. I mean there are times when I admire heroes for their restraint, but Death of the family isn't one of them. I wanted to jump in there and kill the joker about 2 issues in. I can even understand, why in-universe Batman doesn't kill him. But I'm still tired of the guy, and him still being around kind of ruins the whole suspension of disbelief.

I mean he's lucky he doesn't share a Universe with the Punisher or even Wolverine, he'd have been gone a long time ago. Hell cyclops would have ordered this guys assassination in the old X force days. I guess one one hand I gotta compliment writes for making him so repulsive that I feel like it's some guy in real life that I hate. On the other hand he's started to make comics less enjoyable. Batman's starting to become less fun when he's involved.

Joker has killed several people, he is twisted beyond repair, so why is it such a big deal to not KILL HIM?

On Batman Begins: Bats for Brains CLEARLY lets Ra's die, but on The Dark Knight he goes out of his way to save Mr. J... again WHY?

Ra's was truly more evil than Joker?

ANd yet again this idea pops up. Damian kills Nobody, and its ok... but The Joker ohhhh thats different... WHY? (+)

You can't kill the Joker. And I think that's the reason writers enjoy him so much. Because even when he loses, he wins. That's why I love his character. And maybe my views are a bit jaded due to my disliking of Damian as a character. He's a brat, then he'll have that one moment that makes you go "wow maybe he really did learn something, or wow he really opened up" But in the next issue he's the same arrogant brat. So the short hand is Joker will never lose to Damian.

Potentially, yes Damian could kill Joker, but its not really the most important question that one must be asking, and you pretty much addressed it here. What the true question we must ask is would the writers or powers that be behind the comics allow Damian to kill the Joker, and of course the answer is no. Joker's just too big to fail in comics.
