The nominations for the 2015 Oscars came out today, and with it, there were plenty of nominations for comic book and geek culture films No longer are these films considered to be flash-in-the-pan money makers. They actually have some possibly award winning aspects to them. While none of them are at the "Best Picture" category yet, there were a few surprises along the way.

One of the biggest hits of the summer, Guardians of the Galaxy, landed two nominations: Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and best Visual Effects. The whole category of Best Visual Effects ended up being a smorgasbord of nerd films. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Guardians, and X-Men: Days of Future Past were all nominated, along with Interstellar.

Under Best Sound Editing, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the final installment of the Hobbit trilogy, is nominated against some pretty tough contenders as well.

Under Best Original Song, "Everything is Awesome" from The LEGO Movie received a nomination but surprisingly, it didn't receive a nomination for Animated feature.

However, Big Hero 6, loosely based on the comic from Marvel, did receive a nomination for best Animated Feature. The biggest film it's up against is The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, which features some of the folks that worked on Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke (not Hayao Miyazaki though).

The big one of 2015 was Birdman (The Unexpected Virtue of Innocence), which in itself isn't based on a comic book or something from geek culture, but it's close. Michael Keaton plays a washed-up actor who once portrayed a famous super-hero on the big screen. He tries to put together a Broadway play to reclaim his fame. The film was nominated 9 times: Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role (Michael Keaton), Actor in a Supporting Role (Edward Norton), Actress in a Supporting Role (Emma Stone), Cinematography (Emmanuel), Directing (Alejandro G. Iñárritu), Sound Editing (Martin Hernández and Aaron Glascock), Sound Mixing (Jon Taylor, Frank A. Montaño and Thomas Varga), and Writing of an Original Screenplay (Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, Jr. & Armando Bo). Looks like the film starring the one-time Batman (well, two-time Batman) could get a lot of wins.
