Marvel Comics' Biggest Name Just Left For DC

Writer Brian Michael Bendis, who wrote for Marvel for years, has just made the venture over to DC Comics, and the comic book community is shocked.

In one of the most shocking moments in recent comic book history, writer Brian Michael Bendis--a staple at Marvel Comics for years--is headed to DC Comics, signing an exclusive deal with the publisher. The mind behind Ultimate Spider-Man, House of H, Secret Invasion, Powers, and Spider-Men--some of the best comics at Marvel over the past decade, will be working with a whole new batch of characters in the coming years.

No Caption Provided

DC announced the news (via Twitter): "We are beyond thrilled to welcome Brian Michael Bendis exclusively to the DC family with a multiyear, multi-faceted deal. He's one of the premier writers in the industry having created so many unforgettable stories wherever he's been, and we can't wait to see what he has planned for the DC Universe."

Bendis retweeted the statement, adding "This is real. I love you all. Change is good. Change is healthy. I am bursting with ideas and inspirations. Details to come!"

This won't be the first time Bendis has written at DC. Back in 2000, he wrote a story for Batman Chronicles #21 called "Citizen Wayne," where Clark Kent tries to learn Bruce Wayne's darkest secrets. However, Bendis has never had a full-time gig at DC until now, so the doors are wide open for him to take on old characters and create some new ones.

While non-comic book readers may not be familiar with him, they will know some of the characters he's created. Bendis is credited with creating Jessica Jones, who has her own Netflix series; Quake, who is one of the main characters on Agents of SHIELD; Maria Hill, who has appeared in numerous Marvel movies; and Ganke; who Spider-Man Homecoming's Ned Leeds is based on, whether or not Sony and Marvel would like to admit it.

As of now, there is no information as to what Bendis will be working on at DC first, and the writer still has comics finishing up at Marvel, like the mini-series Spider-Men II.

As someone who reads both Marvel and DC, I'm so glad he's leaving Marvel. Bendis was good when writing for street level and new characters. However, Marvel then gave him access to titles such as X-Men and Avengers. His inability to understand the fact that legacy and relationships was important for these teams, saw him constantly re-imagining the teams by adding characters in a non-organic manner or simply putting the flavor of the week in. Then there was the continued push for nonsensical retcons (Sentry, Blue Marvel, Beyonder etc.). He also constantly turned characters into his personal monologue machines, often at the lost of their personality (or basic level of intelligence)...

Even worse were all the cross-overs. It was clear that Bendis' lacked knowledge on established characters outside the street levelers. Which meant that his big events either changed character's to fit or he simply made an alternate reality...

Hopefully DC will give him access to Batman, which seems to account for the majority of their highest sales. Bendis' commercialism and street level writing cred could work there. Also DC seems more willing to retcon and simply re-boot than Marvel. Which could work well for Bendis who is better at creating and retconning characters than he is at expanding on their established narratives...

Thoughtful comment, nice job.

I fear that people who are suggesting or hoping Bendis will be pawned off on some alternate universe thing or some minor storyline or C-list title are likely to be sorely disappointed. Not saying that's not a good idea, especially as he's getting his feet wet over there, but I doubt they're bringing in "the" Brian Michael Bendis (with all the hype & trumpeting fanfare attendant to the move) only to stick him in "the basement" (metaphorically speaking) on a small desk & have him spending (significant) time writing those sorts of things. No hard evidence, just a gut feeling.

Hopefully he will have a shorter leash with tighter editorial control; I think that can be reasonably expected, & also hopefully if the ideas suck they will have the spine to tell him so & to go rewrite it. I also think it's reasonable to assume, given that they'll have Bendis for quite some time, that at some point DC will hand him some of their premier properties, including any of the "Big 7" (most definitely including either or both of the World's Finest), big team books (yes: I'm looking at you, Justice League), maybe look to him to jump start the Martian Manhunter or Captain Marvel aka "Shazam not the wizard," etc.

If he writes like early 00s Bendis, it should be OK. If he doesn't & is more in current form...

Fingers crossed time, guys.

It's time for a new headline. This has been up since early November. What about Gail Simone writing for Marvel again? Black Panther is almost upon us--any news there? Please, out with the old and in with some new.

@outcry: there's barely any staff left to admin let alone write the articles anymore after gamespot more or less 'gutted' this site's staff.

Seconded. He will likely be perfect for DC who has had how many major reboots now? Yeah, perfect fit.

This is the end of DC as we know it. It is more political than you think. High up there in DC, executive ownership have changed, and so they finally mandated changes down within DC in order to be nothing but a mirror of Marvel. That is why they are hiring Marvel artists/writters, to now implement the same political narrative from Marvel.

This is a political move. DC has been taken over and dismantled. The conservative views are dead, it is happening in every other media business, hollywood, all in response to taking Trump down.

I would say the New 52 was the last work of DC. After that, it is a Marvel-DC.

New 52 is conservative and non-political like Marvel? Like Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern is gay, Black Powergirl and Black Flash, Muslim Green Lantern? It's weird how people put down Marvel for making drastic changes when DC has done it first with New 52, even now there are gay Aqualad, Asian Atom, Chinese Super-Man, Cyborg as the leader of Justice League and has consistently get a comic book as DC trying to make him an A-lister even when his sales dipped below 10k. Both Marvel and DC have always been liberal politically. Comics have always been ahead of their time in term of liberal view, so I don't see why you act like these are new things or DC or Marvel have ever been conservative.

Good for him. He put in a lot of work for Marvel. I feel like Marvel fans aren't gonna appreciate just how much he was doing until he starts putting out work for DC.

They don't appreciate him because he's also put out allot of crap as well. This ain't 2012 so who cares if Bendis leaves or not. He's been half a$$ing it for years anyway.

I'm not the kinda guy that likes to say I told ya so, but a few months back I wrote:

I picked up Action Comics #1000 yesterday & lo & behold at the end of the book what do my wandering eyes see but the teaser of a 6-part mini penned by none other than BMB himself titled "Man of Steel."

https://www.cbr.com/dc-comics-brian-michael-bendis-man-of-steel-color-covers/

https://www.bleedingcool.com/2018/02/01/brian-bendis-man-steel-superman-1-action-comics-1001-dc-nation-jinxworld/

So, that's precisely one half of the World's Finest knocked off right outta the gate lol. Anybody taking any wagers he won't get his hands into the other half before very long? So much for "alternate universes" & "C-list titles" lol.

It was just a feeling I had, to be honest, but I never imagined they were bringing this guy in to write Cyborg. He might eventually, of course, but DC was going to want to make a big splash with their new "superstar" & now they have, starting him off with the most famous hero of all time.

I really hope he's on form & doesn't screw things up lol.

They don't care if sells go down. They are all backed up by insurance and bankers. CNN and SNL and even the NFL don't give a damn either. They are all losing 40% of their viewers, yet continue with their 100% grotesque political agenda of anti-gun, anti-trump, pro-russian collusion, pro-hillary clinton and most of all: Pro-Let's-Accept-All-Illegal-Immigrants!

I wish comics had just 5% politics in it. Not having the entire franchise being completely a flagship to brainwash the children reading it.

It goes back 5.000 years the old saying - everything starts with the youth. The mass-murder-maniac Adolf Hitler aimed at the German Youth as well. These controlling freaks democratic-illegal-terrorists lovers will stop at nothing. Hollywood needs to be cleaned up fast. Trump isn't cleaning them fast enough.
