Marvel Comics' Biggest Name Just Left For DC

Writer Brian Michael Bendis, who wrote for Marvel for years, has just made the venture over to DC Comics, and the comic book community is shocked.

In one of the most shocking moments in recent comic book history, writer Brian Michael Bendis--a staple at Marvel Comics for years--is headed to DC Comics, signing an exclusive deal with the publisher. The mind behind Ultimate Spider-Man, House of H, Secret Invasion, Powers, and Spider-Men--some of the best comics at Marvel over the past decade, will be working with a whole new batch of characters in the coming years.

No Caption Provided

DC announced the news (via Twitter): "We are beyond thrilled to welcome Brian Michael Bendis exclusively to the DC family with a multiyear, multi-faceted deal. He's one of the premier writers in the industry having created so many unforgettable stories wherever he's been, and we can't wait to see what he has planned for the DC Universe."

Bendis retweeted the statement, adding "This is real. I love you all. Change is good. Change is healthy. I am bursting with ideas and inspirations. Details to come!"

This won't be the first time Bendis has written at DC. Back in 2000, he wrote a story for Batman Chronicles #21 called "Citizen Wayne," where Clark Kent tries to learn Bruce Wayne's darkest secrets. However, Bendis has never had a full-time gig at DC until now, so the doors are wide open for him to take on old characters and create some new ones.

While non-comic book readers may not be familiar with him, they will know some of the characters he's created. Bendis is credited with creating Jessica Jones, who has her own Netflix series; Quake, who is one of the main characters on Agents of SHIELD; Maria Hill, who has appeared in numerous Marvel movies; and Ganke; who Spider-Man Homecoming's Ned Leeds is based on, whether or not Sony and Marvel would like to admit it.

As of now, there is no information as to what Bendis will be working on at DC first, and the writer still has comics finishing up at Marvel, like the mini-series Spider-Men II.

I think the move is good for Bendis, his been writing for Marvel over 15 years and his writing started get pretty route... We'll see whose going to take the "throne" from Bendis as Marvel's premiere writer, Bendis was quite the workhorse having worked as many as 5 ongoing at the same time in one point.

We will find out by the way he writes. Was it marvel forcing or just his preference.

It's sad that Bendis was Marvel's biggest name. Very telling.

whatever someone's personal opinion of Bendis, the fact that He's leaving Marvel is bad news for Marvel. It would be like Geoff Johns leaving DC for Marvel. Bendis has a hand in multi-media productions right? tv and movies? Will he still be doing that or is he leaving completely?

Good for him. He put in a lot of work for Marvel. I feel like Marvel fans aren't gonna appreciate just how much he was doing until he starts putting out work for DC.

Well at Marvel he had his own kingdom, at DC he is a peasant, respected but doubt he would get to throw his weight around. However, At least DC movies will now have cool titles to it.

@jameswayne: Don't know if he ever did but if so 1. why did he had a hand in that? he writes comic scripts and 2. if so why leave it no matter the department DC is still the rival of Marvel right?

Good riddance!! Glad to see him leave Marvel comics. He was part of the problem. Also good to see him get a fresh start at DC because if he has an editor and they actually make him write instead of just letting him run things we may see some good stuff from him. Also Marvel sales are down and now their biggest name leaves....Is this the death knell? Is something drastic like a real reboot coming? Is this the first of many moves shaking up editorial and everything? I hope it is and I hope it's for the better for all parties

Either Bendis must have gotten bored at Marvel or they must have done something to tick him off. Those are the only reasons I think why Bendis would switch over to DC, though they are just speculation. Bendis has become synonymous with Marvel for his work at the company for over a decade now so his move to DC is definitely a major shake up in the comics industry. However, considering Bendis' recent comics work includes; Civil War II, Invincible Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy, which all sucked really hard, I am far from enthusiastic about Bendis' shift to DC. Whatever he's working in, even if it's a favourite character, I will be staying far away from.

@lvenger: I think they wanted to cancel riri and not want to call Miles Morales Spider-Man anymore due to fans not buying the books. It's his creation and they are going to butcher it.

Apparently, he's doing something with Scott Snyder.

From the phrasing of Scott's tweet it's hard to tell whether he means working with him personally or just alongside him in the same company. Though I've heard that Scott might have plans for Zatanna and/or the Martian Manhunter after he's done with Metal, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Scott's tweet: "Getting to work along side @brianmbendis is yet another comic dream realized this year. Brian, you're going to slay! Cannot wait!"

True, this makes me laugh. He's one of the people you would considered "SJW". It's funny when ignorant people don't even do their research just spill random attacks. He's the one who introduced gay iceman, and the one who wrote Riri, female Ironman, on top of various strong female characters.

In a way I am actually excited to see what he will bring to the table once he starts handling DC characters.

Yes, some of his recent runs and books have been mediocre at best but he has continued with the same good quality on Spider-Man for all these years. There are some characters that he just handles so well. Let's hope there's a particular character like that in the DC universe as well.

House of H??? It's House of M.

Also, "While non-comic book readers may not be familiar with him, they will know some of the characters he's created." What is this website? Has this place really gotten so watered down users don't even know who Bendis is? And then to give him credibility by the number of characters that ended up on screen. Because that's what really counts. <--- sarcasm

Honestly BMB's work in the turn of the century from like Avengers Disassemble all the way up to Avengers vs X-Men was some of the coolest and most exciting and inspiring stuff we got in Marvel ever. He was a huge part of the the stories that really got me into comics and i think back to his New Avengers run and the chemistry he invented with Luke Cage and Spider-Man and stuff and it was just pure magic coming off the page. So it kind does kill me and make me kinda sad to see this happen.

That being said his GotG stuff.... and his X-Men stuff.... and Civil Wars 2.... and his most recent Iron Man stuff... he clearly feels like a writer that is just writing at marvel because he has to keep writing but doesn't actually have any ideas and is turning Marvel Universe into something that isn't marvel Universe because he is out of ideas for the marvel u. In that sense I'm kind of glad. He gave so much but i don't really want to keep reading the kind of stories directions he is taking us down anymore so giving him something new to play with could be good. Just considering a BMB Superman or Batman or Justice League or Green Lantern series has me kind of excited.

In the end Im not exactly sure how i feel since he was such an important writer to my time reading marvel but in the end was kind of turning sour.... so I'm kind of tempted to just post this to sum up my feels lol.

As someone who usually just reads Marvel comics, I say good riddance! Not having to be in a panic every time there's a rumor that he'll write a charater I like, will be wonderfull.

Now, if only DC could take Axel Alonso too...

On one hand, he did amazing things for Marvel for 10 years, on the other, he did horrible things at Marvel for the last 5 years, idk how I feel about this.

But if anything, I'd rather DC got Jeff Lemire & Charles Soule back for good again, and not this guy. ( also Greg Pak & Andrea Sorrentino while we're at it ).
