Marvel Announces New HULK Series Starring Jennifer Walters

She-Hulk is dropping the "She" part of her name.

No Caption Provided

Jennifer Walters has survived the Civil War, but not unscathed. This December, she rises from the rubble, re-entering the world as a different kind of hero in the all-new HULK #1! Eisner Award-winning writer Mariko Tamaki (This One Summer) makes her Marvel debut alongside rising star artist Nico Leon (Spider-Man) to chronicle the ongoing adventures of Jennifer Walters – and bring you a Hulk book for Marvel NOW! the likes of which you’ve never seen before!

Following the traumatic events of Civil War II, Jen is determined to move forward, to go on with her life. But there is something bubbling under the surface. A quiet rage. The physical and mental wounds are still fresh. The pain of the past and all she’s lost is always there – an undercurrent, a pulse, waiting to quicken and trigger her transformation into the one thing she doesn’t have control over…the HULK!

“The title Hulk implies all of the baggage that comes with that comic’s 50+ year history – the ongoing battle with the monster within – and that’s why it’s more appropriate for this series,” says Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso, speaking with The AV Club. “Jen went through major trauma in Civil War II, and Mariko and Nico’s story will deal with the fallout of that trauma – the anxiety and anger, sometimes self-destructive, that comes along with it. If there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, Jen is going to have to search hard for it, and she’s going to have to battle with some pretty big monsters – including the one within – to find herself again.”

Jennifer Walters’ greatest battle is about to begin. One that will pit her against the monster inside. Can she control the rage that consumed her cousin Bruce for so long? Or will she succumb to it? Find out when Tamaki and Leon bring you the can’t-miss HULK #1 this December!

Why not just call it She-Hulk? We all know it's She-Hulk.

Look below where I explain why I think they are going to refer to her as Hulk. And I'm not sure if I would call Jen a minority character.

Why not just call it She-Hulk? We all know it's She-Hulk.

Not really. Jen's thing has almost always been that she was the perfect Hulk. She had Hulk strength, but none of the rage and trauma Bruce had. I may have misunderstood, but I think the idea that Jen is going to become a "normal" Hulk; an unstable one.

@waezi2: The article clearly states she will now be anxious and angry yeah really progressive after the character has dealt with the insecurity faced before the female body ideal and been a lawyer for all her existence, she can now throw temper tantrums. Plus Amadeus is still gonna be around and be another Hulk, who has been going by that name longer than she has.

I meant the minority part in reference to the fact women are treated like minorities in pretty much all regards and that it also happened with Iron Heart, who was entirely marketed on the basis of being Iron Man and now is gonna star in a book called Iron Man rather than it being named after her own identity, while we have another Iron Man series about a guy called Iron Man, that is also a series about Doctor Doom, Marvels most popular villain.

This is essentially this:

Oh my god, are we finally going to be done with amadeus cho as Hulk?! Hell yeah. I don't even care that it seems contrived to drop the "she" bit after like 36 years of her not having any problem with it. This is awesome.

Everyone needs to calm down. Once the Fantastic Four comes back, Franklin Richards will look at what a mess the Marvel Universe is and just say "Back to normal", and everything will be fixed.

@doc-holiday: honestly there's nothing wrong with sharing mantles and having more than one of the same character sharing the same mantle and abilities I'd prefer it that way.

Why is she "Hulk" now? Also I'd rather see Red She-Hulk get a 2nd chance, than her getting a millionth chance only to get cancelled again.

@stahlflamme: I didn't say I thought it was a good idea, just what I think it is. But it's not Mariko Tamaki's fault. It's the editors who wanted this, along with getting Bruce killed for a rather meek reason(and by Hawkeye, who takes the no-kill rule more serous than most Avengers).

Well....I'm gonna give the first issue a try. Can't be any worse then the usual Hulk stuff. Totally Awesome Hulk?! Who tf thought that was a good idea?!

Also who really thinks it's ok for multiple characters to have the same name?! That is lame & lacks creativity.

It's most likely a return to the Savage She-Hulk, the one I originally read when the character was introduced in the 1970's. A non-creative idea given a facade of creativity by marketing. Might be good, might not. Don't care anymore. At least they didn't make her gay.

I like the character, but this is a stupid move. Marvel and the SJW news sites they cater (aka pander) to will celebrate this move as a win for women. However, giving a woman (or minority) a white straight man's name doesn't empower them. It just sends the message that if you aren't a white straight man and you want to succeed, you need to just copy what they do.

It would be so much more empowering for Marvel to really push She-Hulk as her own thing; a hero in her own right who doesn't need to steal a man's title to be great. But, something like that would actually require real, hard work and wouldn't generate meaningless internet buzz for a few weeks.

Crap like this doesn't bring in those precious SJW millennial dollars. Those people don't spend money on things, they just complain. DC rebirth brought in money because they actually tried to please long time fans who feel alienated by all the changes of late. Maybe comic readers would buy more Marvel comics if the company started to respect their characters and readers.

I mean, I'm glad She Hulk is getting a new series but I see no point in her dropping the she so she can capitalize on Banner's legacy.

Can't we have some none bait and switch comics?

What's with the rage everyone? Her name literally has Hulk in it.

I think it is basically because as She-Hulk though she was a hulk she had her own identity, one developed by many writers over many years and from the looks it they are going to fold her into a simple Hulk, monster inside, always struggling for control, haunted by actions... Just like we've seen in so many, many other Hulk titles. I've seen Jen when she was first created, when she developed in the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, I've seen her in nearly every one of her titles but aside from her first series I've never seen her in a regular series just be another raging Hulk. This may not be what they are going to but when you consider what marvel has done to their characters over the last decade or so, the hypocrisy, fascism and downright idiocy like making Iceman gay and Hawkeye a murderer... Unless you've really loved all that it's hard to be optimistic now that they seem to have set their sights on yet another character to mangle. Yes it'll probably be temporary because it won't sell that great and marvel writers don't really have a lot of long term writing capacity anymore, any plot will probably be ripped to shreds by the event after Inhuman's versus X-men, but even short term character butchery can be upsetting to some fans.

I think it works because she IS like Bruce, she DOES have a monster underneath, we've seen it come out both in her initial appearances in Savage She-Hulk and in Disassembled and bits here and there over the years... She just has just had it under control... Now that biz? Is over.

Really as sad as it is to see Jen go through this? I think she needed this kind of shake up to her status quo. I mean all the ligther and more fun focused superheroine comics like Squirrel Girl, Gwenpool, Hellcat, even DC's got Harley Quinn... It just feels sort of like Jen wouldn't stand out as much in that demographic at the moment. The lighter fun superheroine stuff.

THIS kind of Jennifer Walters? Where she's the big bruiser with a chip on her shoulder and is gonna be smashing heads like her old cousin? That's something I'd like to see! I'm seeing something like Gravage Hulk for Jen. Where she's not

"Wreck a city block just because she got mad"

But more

"Yeah you're MAYBE walking away from this fight alive"
