Mark Bagley Preps For Guest Stint With New Batman

Fresh off of Trinity, Mark Bagley continues with the new Batman.

I really like Mark Bagley's style.  He has shown that he can pretty much draw anyone over at DC.  It looks like he's not done with Batman just yet.  Starting with Batman #688, Bagley will do a four issue "guest stint."

DC has released a few pages featuring Bagley's art with the "new" Batman.  Unfortunately The images don't really offer any hints as to who is wearing the "cowl."  I would even say it looks pretty much like Bruce under there.  Either way, it's something I'm looking forward to.  Judd Winick will be writing.

Here's the synopsis for the July 8th issue:
There may be a new Batman in Gotham City, but that doesn't mean the city wants him. As Two-Face and Penguin take measures to keep the new Dark Knight at bay, one of the archvillains makes a startling discovery about the new Caped Crusader. Plus, Batman trains the new Robin, and Mark Bagley starts a 4-issue stint as guest artist!

What do you think?

Chaos agent said EXACTLY what I was thinking.  Bagley's style has really evolved, and these pencils look so TIGHT it's almost painful....but in a good way.  Awesome art, nice to see the "roughs" like this.

My question is: Who is that beating the crap out of Batman? You see a glove with the fins (is that what you would call them?) on the first panel of the second page, and then in the next panel, you see a sillhouette of the dude in the next panel? I'm guessing we haven't seen him before, but I've just started reading the current Batman series.

Wow, I don't read Trinity, and I haven't seen Bagley's art since Ultimate Spider-Man, but it looks like he's stepped his game up.

If Bagley's art was cake I would totally get fat.

Anyone else see the resemblance to Jim Lee's style, particularly in Batman's facial feature's and rigid bone structure in that first picture. Looks amazing. Can't wait to see what else this guy has up his sleeve! And if it looks this ridiculous in pencil, I can't imagine how it'll look with the talent of a decent colorist.

@Babs:  I'd say there is some similarity to Jim Lee's Batman, but not too terribly much.  Plenty of artists emulate Jim Lee's style without realizing it.  It's hard not to, Jim Lee IS the SupRaSta comic book artist!   Bagley's style has always been very fluid and dynamic and I liken him a bit more to Marc Silvestri's style.  Both are great, but it appears Bagley has really improved quite a bit, far more realistic and dramatic than his previous work.  His early work (New Warriors) was lighter, but still full of action.  However you slice it, concerning the art, the fans win.

That is probably Two-Face in his own version of the Batman outfit.  This is just a guess but we have yet to see him in it, even though it was shown on the Battle for the Cowl promo pic.

Looks pretty good, Bagley's work on Ultimate Spider-Man and Trinity is very good and the book will look great.

As far as Judd Winick's writing, I think the book has a chance to be good since it will probably focus more on the new Batman then large groups. I've read some of Winick's stuff but not Green Arrow/ Black Canary or Titans it's sounds like Winick's weakpoint may be multiple characters.

That's who I thought it was at first. Unfortunately, his guest stint is not going to get me to start picking up Batman. As a Batman fan, I just feel that the character has been a train wreck for years - but that's just me. Now if he were back on Ultimate Spider-Man or doing a guest stint over in Green Lantern...that would be a different story...

I love his artwork and I'm keen to see it in a book I'd want to read. Trinity didn't appeal to me storywise, New Batman could be awesome though.

I hope Winick can put together something memorable.

My guess is that the silhouette is HUSH and they are in the batcave.  Stating the obvious, I know but there we are.
