Justice League Film: Who Is the Villain Steppenwolf?

Darkseid's uncle will be the first step for the Justice League.

Steppenwolf was revealed to be the big baddie for the upcoming Justice League film, which will be hitting theaters in late 2017. However, that's not a character most people recognize. Who is this villain, and what makes him worthy of being the main antagonist of such a huge film?

No Caption Provided

This character first appeared back in 1972 in New Gods #7. He's a part of the weird worlds created by legendary artist and writer Jack Kirby. Without getting too heavy into what's called "Fourth World," Steppenwolf comes from the planet Apokolips, which is either at war with New Genesis or about to go to war with it. Think of Apokolips as the "bad" planet and New Genesis as the "good" planet or as Hell and Heaven. These planets contain super-powered beings called The New Gods. Most of them reside on New Genesis, under the rule of Highfather. A few who oppose Highfather live on Apokolips, under Darkseid's rule.

Steppenwolf is the uncle of Darkseid and one of his elite soldiers. He's a powerhouse character who borders on having omnipotent power. His laundry list of abilities includes superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and senses. In addition, he's invulnerable, has immunity from diseases and toxins, and he's immortal. Saying he's going to be a challenge for the Justice League is the understatement of the century. In the thousands of years of his existence, he's mastered many forms of combat, and if that's not enough, he carries an electro-axe, which is as dangerous as it sounds.

Aside from his powers, Steppenwolf isn't the friendliest of characters. During the New 52 DC Universe, Steppenwolf tried to take over Earth-2 in Darkseid's name. The superheroes of Earth-2 were no match for the overpowered soldier. The battle almost seemed unfair. Eventually, as always, the heroes prevailed, in a way. Steppenwolf may have died in battle, but he accomplished his goal for at least a short time.

No Caption Provided

We have already seen what Steppenwolf will look like in the upcoming 2017 film. Warner Brothers revealed a deleted scene from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice which showed Lex Luthor looking at a hologram of someone holding three Mother Boxes. More recently, it was revealed that the hologram was in fact of Steppenwolf.

Mother Boxes are small supercomputers that allow people of Apokolips and New Genesis to teleport great distances, including to Earth. This will be how Steppenwolf will be able to travel so far. He won't be coming alone though. If you remember the vision of the future during Batman v Superman, there were flying demon-like creatures in the sky. These were Parademons, the soldiers for Darkseid's army. Steppenwolf will most likely be leading the way with his army, using the Mother Boxes as transport. Aside from this invulnerable New God, the Justice League will also have to face a horde of flying soldiers.

No Caption Provided

Steppenwolf may not be a high-profile villain from the DC Universe, but he's certainly a terrifying force for the Justice League to fight. He has an immense amount of power, along with an army of flying soldiers. How will the protectors of Earth stop this force? We'll have to wait until November 17, 2017 when Justice League hits theaters.

Not a fan of the BvS look at all. I wish they had gone for the more human-like appearance.

Also, they gotta do something about the lighting in these movies.

I have to admit that all the information they have been revealing the past few days (including the pieces written by journalists visiting the set) has somewhat boosted my excitement for this movie. I remain skeptical, but I feel this might be a lot better than BvS. I agree that the Steppenwolf design is a bit too CGI for my taste though.

Definitely a powerful character. The next film will feature Darkseid I suppose.

Out of all the changes to Justice League, Steppenwolf being the sole villain might actually be considered an improvement. Because let's be honest, playing Darkseid so early on in the DC Cinematic game was never a good idea and there's much more to do in building Darkseid up to use later on like with Thanos. However, Steppenwolf's look leaves much to be desired and if he turns out as dud of a villain as Doomsday was, that won't signal a good sign given Steppenwolf's history depicted here.

Band of heroes first outing is against an alien invasion force sent by an unknown powerful 'warlord', with an underlying plot connecting the aliens to powerful alien artifacts.

Seriously, I don't care if that other company ripped the idea off in the first place for their film, but they already did that film. So much epic JL material over the decades and this is the one WB wants to go with. Again, the REAL problem with BvS wasn't tone or aesthetics or not enough jokes, but the lazy & pretentious story.

Hopefully WB can make their version different enough that people won't feel compelled to compare. Just think they should have tried harder to think outside the box. The only way they'll garner praise and respect is to show something that hasn't been done before.

hopefully the reason the scene was cut was because they realized he looked like crap. if they do choose to go with Steppenwolf as the bb for the movie, let's hope a redesign is in the works also.

Nice article, and I think Steppenwolf is a valid choice for an antagonist if they want to build up to Darkseid for the second movie. I'm really looking forward to Justice League.

No. That's what turned the MCU into the Marvel Comedy Universe.

Thank goodness DC is not trying to copy the tone and feel of the Marvel movies (which I like). So far (and this will sound weird since we are talking about spandex-clad heroes) DC is appealing more to the adult crowd/movie-goer. Being 40+ I enjoy a good story and a look at the characters. I have my Marvel...thanks DC for doing something different.

BTW a ton complained about all the death in the Superman movie, but nobody said a word with the new Xmen film. Just saying.

I still think this is a very underwhelming choice for a villain, so many great villains to choose and they went with SteppenWolf, a C-List villain, it´s like if Avengers chose The Hood to be the main villain for a movie, and I´d argue that even he has more relevance due to being the main villain for like 2 volumes of New Avengers.

Agreed on both parts.

The color is a major issue. The symbolism of Superman was completely gone in MoS due to the dark colors. The only one Snyder got right is Batman's costume.

Don't get me wrong, I do love dark colors more than light, and a more darker tone in movies than a light (for example Avengers compared to Captain America Winter Soldier or The Dark Knight, I prefer the tone of two last mentioned rather than the first), but it feels wrong and it's too god damned dark!

@theexile285: I agree we already had one underwhelming CGI grey behemoth with "Doomsday" and considering that the only way I can see Darkseid being done right is with similar effects I would prefer a more down to earth villain for this first Justice League movie. On the bright side unless they include the deleted scene in the R-Rated cut they could always redesign the character for Justice League.

I remember the Steppenwolf Kenner Super Powers action figure, had that. This guy looks very different, not as cool. Joking aside.....it's a build up to Darkseid and what has been done in the DC Nu52. I have mixed emotions about it all, idk yet...

I am inclined to agree, much of the worst DC villains are human/humanoid in form so I feel it is better to go for that look. This version looks like a character from the Doom series.

As for the lighting, DC seems to be leaning towards the dark, gritty appearance for Batman films for some reason. I hope that the other League members movies aren't as dark.

I agree. A more human-looking Steppenwolf would make alot of sense.

I think you could easily just say the face he's wearing in this clip is a mask or helmet.

Ronan is not a mediocre villain, he´s always been a threat to the galaxy, he´s part of one of the most powerful teams in the universe (Annihilators), the elite killer of an entire race (Kree) and has been a major player in several huge events like Annihilation. He´s at least on a higher ranking than SteppenWolf for sure.
