Jon Favreau & Robert Downey Jr's Next Movie Is Not What You Think

What does this mean for the Avengers and Iron Man?

We're all expecting that Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr's next movie (after Iron Man 2) to be something Marvel related like maybe...The Avengers.  Turns out that won't be the case.  The two are taking a break from the Marvel Universe but they're not completely leaving the comic book medium.  What will their next project be?  Cowboys & Aliens.

The premise basically deals with aliens attempting to take over the Earth during the 1800s.  In the Old West, the settlers and the Native Americans had a little struggle going on.  Can they join forces to take on the alien invaders?

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Robert Downey Jr had been attached to this project since last summer.  Last Fall, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (who were set to produce) took over scripting the movie along with Damon Lindelof.  Jon Favreau just decided that this would be the next movie he directs.

It's looking like Dreamworks will shoot (no pun intended) for a summer 2011 release.  The question that remains is how much of an impact, if any, will this have on an Avengers movie?  Do you think a movie with cowboys and alien will work?  What do you think of Robert Downey Jr playing a cowboy (I'm assuming that's what he'll be doing)?  Good luck trying to track down the comic by Platinum Studios.  Hopefully it'll come back into print soon.
