Iron Man's Fate in Civil War II Revealed

Marvel has launched two new Iron Man series and neither has Tony Stark wearing the armor. Now it's clear why that is.

The Marvel Universe is currently experiencing a second Civil War. An Inhuman has surfaced with the ability to predict the future. Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, has made it her mission to apprehend individuals involved in those predictions before they are able to commit any foul deeds. Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, disagrees and feels it's a violation of the individuals' rights. The two have been at odds since.

Marvel has released two new Iron Man series: Invincible Iron Man and Infamous Iron Man. The first series features 15-year-old Riri Williams. The second deals with Doctor Doom taking on the mantle of Iron Man. Both series take place after Civil War II and readers have only been given hints about the absence of Tony Stark. With the release of Civil War II #7, it appears we finally have some answers to Stark's fate.

Warning: There will be spoilers for Civil War II #7 below.

No Caption Provided

The latest prediction showed Miles Morales (Spider-Man) killing Captain America. Carol immediately wanted to place Miles under arrest which lead to a group of heroes on Carol and Tony's side fighting each other. Captain America decided to allow Miles to leave when he said he had no intentions of killing him. Trying to deal with the impact of the vision, Miles decides to go to the scene of the supposed crime to hopefully prove he's not going to kill the Captain, who also decided to show up.

As the two heroes talk, Carol arrives and tries to convince Miles to go into protective custody with her. As she reaches out to him, everyone is surprised to find a force field appear in front of Miles. Tony Stark is there in a new and massive suit. Saying he gave her one last chance to give up her crusade, he pushes towards an attack.

After weeks of tension and fighting between them, things soon escalate. Carol delivers a massive blow to Iron Man in a fashion very similar to when Thanos killed War Machine in the events that kicked off this comic event.

What does this mean for Tony Stark?

A punch like that isn't something a normal person can walk away from. In the pages of Infamous Iron Man #1, Doom discovered Stark downloaded his brain into a digital projection "in case [his] bodily functions failed [him]." In Invincible Iron Man #1, Riri Williams mentions Tony Stark is gone just when she was getting to know him. She also receives Stark's digital form to serve as the A.I. in her suit of armor.

It's not fully clear if Tony Stark is actually dead. Tony Stark's recent girlfriend even had her doubts when Doctor Doom paid her a visit.

No Caption Provided

Comic book characters die and miraculously return from the dead all the time. What we do know is Tony Stark is out of the picture. He is no longer Iron Man and won't be around anytime soon. Doctor Doom and Riri Williams will take his place for the time being.

@mark_stephen: He did face consequences, he was locked up, put on trial, he just ended up not serving time.

@rubear Well I guess I am done then, with any marvel title influenced by Bendis or this stupid event.

But Tony plans. This is the guy who cloned Thor, who had a Hulk-buster weapon that was previously tested on Jen, if he were serious about taking Carol out he'd have had the weapons handy to do it. But in this case Bendis wanted him dead. In cw1 Tony was the villain who got to kill (by proxy anyway since Clor was his creation), now in cw2 Carol is the villain so she gets to kill.

What a load! Carol has been a great deal more powerful for some time now. So I can see her killing Tony but I doubt that's what actually happened. I'm sure it's what we're supposed to believe along with the fact that it was captain hydra who manipulated all these casualties leaving the heroes decimated. I'm sure Tony will pop up when it's time to put Cap down. This should be Marvel's long game and I won't lie I'm somewhat interested but my patience are running thin. As for Cyclops dude deserved better and I'm getting really tired of how Marvel has been dealing with Mutants lately. You're not getting the movie rights deal with it and stop trashing 50 years of incredible story telling by some of the genres greatest masters. I'm right on the cusp as I'm sure many other fans. . .

Bendis had to kill 3 iconic Heros to get anyone to care about this. Am I the only one that has noticed that?

It's not over yet, he might kill a few more. As long as this stuff sells, this is what we are going to see. I imagine in civil war 3 Carol will be reduced and some other villain will kill her.

I'd really like to know why people think Tony is dead when it's almost 100% -proof to be a remote suit

I am not reading any of marvel comics, but by what is presented in this thread, that seems pretty obvious, and a classic in Iron Man type of characters... So still unimaginative & static writing...

@primeearth2016: Just because Tony doesn't have any powers, that doesn't mean he isn't formidable. In an armor FAR inferior to his current one, Carol couldn't beat him whilst amped by half the power of a city. Now she can manhandle a Hulk-Buster like it's nothing? She's nowhere near that powerful. Must be the PC trends occurring within Marvel. Anybody that isn't a white male gets an amp.

One more reason to not read Marvel anymore.

I think that until Bendis and a few others are replaced, that Marvel's comics are going to continue to resemble a festering wound. It seems like a big office circlejerk is going on, and has been for some time.

This isn't anything new.

Which writers would you choose to helm Marvel into a new direction ??

Personally, I´d choose Jeff Lemire and Charles Soule.

This looks weird. I knew Stark would die in CWII, but I don't think that he died in CWII #7. I'm not even sure it was Tony, cause it's off character for him and armor doesn't looks like Iron Man (cause it's gray with red energy)

Not even Bendis is that bad at writing unless his doing it on purpose to make us think Carol killed Tony.

@thor_parker82: Yeah...I was thinking that she would at least go binary. (even though her current binary form isn't shit compared to what it was)

But she just straight up murders him in base. Something is very wrong with that.

That´s exactly what I was thinking, I have no problem if Carol went into Binary mode and killed Tony, because Binary is goddamn powerful, but regular Carol tearing a whole through Stark´s armor and killing him in the process is just bad writing.

I don't think he was in the armor, or atleast hope he wasn't....

why carol fight all of a sudden like thor level being? why she act like Thanos? why she wasn't killed 8 issues ago? why she will not be arrested?why everyone will act like she is a hero? how come in the last few weeks (MU time) no villen but ccarol and her gang attacked???

I normally am fine with Bendis but Civil War 2 has just been a lot of talking, kill a character and then everyone brooding over it. Any moral messages seems to be getting muddy because the story just feels aimless. It was almost like there was no fully planned out end game.

I don't think Tony is in that armor...

They've been teasing way too much to actually go through with it. I think that he tricked Carol into destroying the armor to show what she's capable of.

The reason why he is not around after CW2 is maybe that he turned himself in for his own crimes during CW2

@ohrenclez: Maybe but Tony is still dying for sure in the next issue one way or another. It's heavily implied in post Civil War II comics like Invincible Iron Man that Tony died at the end of Civil War II.

I think the last thing anyone in the mu cares about is law. Carol's locking people up without trial after all.

In a way this is standard Bendis, if a character needs to be powerful for the story to work, that character is powerful. Remember how he had the Hood beat Tigra where the Hood had no powers and Tigra was supposed to be strong? To this day I can't take Tigra seriously as a crime fighter because of the way she folded against what was basically a street level thug. If Clint needs to be a murderer for the story to work, then he is a murderer despite the fact that he once broke up his marriage over "Avengers don't kill". This is Bendis and if the sales are any indication many people love him for it.

Still, Wanda, Tigra, Bobby, Jean, Clint... Now the final nail in Carol's coffin... The guy has made a career or trashing characters. I wish he'd get out of comics and go to tv or movies or something. But he's set the marvel standard, so I guess this level of poor writing, plotting and characterization are what marvel is going to keep putting out for a long time to come. So long as it sells who there cares about quality?

Perhaps. I could be wrong, but all through this series Carol's been locking people up without trial, just as a fascists always does. Maybe it's different with the writer in her own series trying to salvage the character, writers often have to do that after Bendis. I'll find out in a few years or a decade when I pick it up out of the .50 cent bin. I doubt its worth more than that.

They've literally only had one hardcore revamp in the form of Flashpoint. Rebirth is more of a soft reset serving as an extension of New 52. Certain elements are shifted around but most of the history is intact. Marvel on the other hand feel like they relaunch a title every 15 issues. DC is consistent and follow their own script. They don't piggyback off their movies.

Tony is a prep master!

He probably sent his digital conscious to Dr. Doom's personalized computer to learn about him and his intels before he builds himself another body!
