Interview: Sean Chen on the Conclusion of 'Lights Out' in GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #2

How crazy are things going to get in the final chapter?

This week we'll see the final chapter of Lights Out in GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #2. There've been some big changes as a result and we'll have to see what more is to come. With each chapter, we've talked to the artist for each. We talked to Billy Tan about GREEN LANTERN #24, Bernard Chang about GREEN LANTERN CORPS #24, Brad Walker on GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #24 and Alessandro Vitti on RED LANTERNS #24. Now it's time to talk to Sean Chen about final chapter.

COMIC VINE: Is there still a lot of action and craziness in this issue despite being the conclusion?

SEAN CHEN: Absolutely there is. And it's a great battle to boot. Relic is an unique villain and therefore fights using unusual methods, so this is a confrontation like we haven't seen before. The very thing that compelled me to take on Robert's story was that the scope of the action was appropriate to what is at stake, which is the very future of the Lanterns.

CV: Did you get to see any art from the previous chapters or did you have to dive into drawing this the same time the others are doing theirs?

SC: I was given all the relevant issues connected to this event while they were in progress, as with all the other creators on board. There was as much synergy as possible. There was a good bit already done before I took on the annual, so there seemed to be a wealth of reference material to inspire as well as inform my portion.

No Caption Provided

CV: Did you talk to the other artists or writers or just work off of Robert Venditti's script?

SC: I'm good friends with Bernard Chang is drawing GREEN LANTERN CORPS, so we spoke quite often. The main contacts that I leaned heavily on for ideation was the associate editor Chris Conroy and the writer himself, Robert Venditti. Robert weighed in on every page at the pencil stage. I really loved his movie Surrogates, which led me to the comic that inspired it, so I was really excited to close out a major storyline he wrote. I was pleasantly surprised that he was amenable to a true collaboration.

CV: Can you tell us what your favorite part of this issue is?

SC: I loved drawing Relic. Being from another universe required him to be a unique character with specific motivations that needed to be carefully considered. This really informed his personality, and his unconventional ways of doing battle. I think Robert and the editors did a great job of creating his larger than life persona. Along with Billy Tan's design, made him a blast to draw.

No Caption Provided

CV: What's next for you after this?

SC: Much of my work is in advertising these days. I also do a bunch of covers for Dynamite, Zenescope and IDW. There is also a healthy amount of video game design work in there. For sure, I would drop it all to jump into the breech again with this creative team. Across the board from Editors Matt Idelson and Chris Conroy, Writer Robert Venditti, Jon Sibal and Walden Wong on inks, and colorist Andrew Dalhouse. This was a great collaborative experience, and I think anyone familiar with my work will agree that this is the best it's ever looked.

GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #2 is on sale Wednesday, October 30. Check out the rest of the preview:

Oh shit. Carol + Kyle. I'm not a fan of that combination, despite being a fan of both of those characters.

I can't wait for this issue! Why isn't it Wednesday?

The Green Lantern books have never had this much great talent on them before.

The Carol and Hal combination wasn't working either. They might want to try something new. Just like Lois and Clark. The New 52 brought alot of changes. Let's just wait to see what happens in the final of Lights Out. They might not even end up together, even if I do see them together.

Kyle's always been a great guy around the women he loved and Hal's been treating Carol like shit since he knows her.

I really disliked what they did with Kyle's romantic life. I mean, everyone he loved died except Soranik. Alexandra, Donna and Jade all died (Donna died after she broke up with him when he ex and son died in a car accident).

Everyone like when their favorite superhero has some parts of humanity left. Even Batman had his own girlfriend...

You did not just compare Hal + Carol to Clark + Lois.

I'm not saying that Kyle shouldn't get a girlfriend. I'm saying that it shouldn't be Carol.

Kyle has always been one of my favorite characters and I really like Carol but them being a thing just seems so wrong. It's like seeing your younger brother dating your ex-girlfriend. It's just dirty.

But besides that, that art is just breathtaking. Looking forward to this issue tomorrow.

If you would have read what I wrote, you'd understand.

I meant that Lois and Clark were an important couple in DC. It all changed with the New 52. They are just friends now, even if I think they will end up together soon. There's been enough proof of a potential love between them, again.

Same thing for Hal and Carol. They never worked well together. It didn't help Hal sell books. DC are putting Wonder Woman and Superman together to sell more books (they made a comic of Wonder Woman / Superman). The New Guardians sold a lot as well and I really liked the whole team.

Doesn't mean they will be together but it's a possibility. Who would have thought Clark and Lois wouldn't be together anymore in the New 52...?

Well apparently their good enough to be together for forty years with several break-ups.

I'm guessing you've only been reading GL since Geoff Johns starting writing.

Hal and Carol were meant for each other for god sakes. The thing between Kyle and Carol (whatever it is) is obviously a stunt. The next writer that comes in, will probably retcon it out, acting like it never happened, and go back to Hal and Carol again.

Besides at the end of the Wrath of the First, it was shown that they got married.

I've been reading GL for a really long time buddy. I actually started reading about Hal Jordan since Showcase. But whatever.

That's the thing. Several break-ups don't make it work. Not at all. The writters want something that works. I don't even know if Carol will survive Lights Out or Kyle (he probably will) but how about we wait and see what happens? All I know is that Carol has gotten much closer to Kyle and yes, she started having feelings (the Guardians were able to summon her because of her connection to him). It all started since the apparition of the First Lantern in Wrath of the First Lantern.

Well she's supposed to be Hal's soul mate, and his main love interest. Even if you don't want them to get back together, eventually it'll happen (and the idea of Kyle and Carol makes me sick to my stomach). Besides Robert Venditti reason for breaking them up was stupid and just plain bad writing, especially considering that Carol went to all that trouble just to rescue him (also remember she found an engagement ring in his locker).

Also I hope she doesn't die, she's a very essential character to the GL mythos. Killing her off, would be a huge slap in the face.

Lol at people complaining about Carol and Kyle. This change needed to happen. Hal and Carol's relationship goes through the same cycle over and over again. Anyone familiar with those two knows this. I praise the choice to break the cycle and stir things up. This opens up SO many more possibilities with these characters and their relationships going forward.

Ok now that that's out of the way:

1. Sean Chen's art is gorgeous.

2. Guy looks bad a$$ as ever as a Red.

3. This crossover is effing amazing!

Can't wait for this issue ^.^ V-Ditti has been knocking it out of the park. So glad Green Lantern is in good hands.

@avenging_x_bolt:

I could go on and on about how the idea of a Carol / Kyle relationship is stupid, but I won't try to make long potentially boring statements about it.

Carol's love was strong enough to draw the ring, and she went through hell for Hal. Along comes Robert Vendetti and either he (or the editorial) decide to dump that all, and they way they did was just... well... not good. It felt so childish (and I think Venditti is a fine writer in general).

Aside from that I found the dialogue in the annual to be "soap opera-like" and I'm not impressed by what I've seen.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss Geoff Johns. Venditti (or Matt Kindt if you want to be exact) seems to be trying to destroy everything that Geoff Johns did during his run of GL, and its making me lose interest in the GL franchise for the first time since I started reading it (and I'm a big fan of GL).

I much prefer GLC, and Red Lanterns currently.

I wouldn't mind the change as much, if the execution wasn't better. To me the characters come off as being quite immature, and I don't think the potential setup leading to it was very good. Plus it'll probably lead to a romantic triangle, something I really can't stand.

Of course it could be entirely something different for all I know (this is only a preview after all).

One thing "non carol related" about Venditti's run so far that's bugged me is that he's taken the GLC entirely off earth (at least Johns occasionally showed earth, even if it wasn't very often), and Earth is a big part of the Hal Jordan character.

Also I really think they need to take a huge breather from these big arcs.

"How crazy are things going to get..."? The better question is: WHO CARES!?! Relic is the laziest, most generic Green Lantern villain that's ever been! Justin Jordan killed off the Blue Lanterns for cheap pathos, because he actually believes that anyone espousing something so benevolent and wholesome as Hope must necessarily also be weak! "Yeah," but you say, "Relic destroyed Oa"- well, so what? Just read Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn, and the Guardians themselves admitted that their home-world/Oa ISN'T IMPORTANT!!!

It's sad, but true - other than new material from the pre- New 52 continuity, such as The Sandman: Overture, the DC Comics universe ended with Green Lantern: New Guardians #22 (oh, and Harley Quinn turning out to be a mass murderer - OF CHILDREN!!! - too).

Also I hope she doesn't die, she's a very essential character to the GL mythos. Killing her off, would be a huge slap in the face.

Lois and Clark are supposed to soul mate. For God sake, they were having a ''thing'' in the movie Man of Steel and they were married for a very very long time ago. I mean, people who knew Superman knew about Lois as well. They named a street after her. There's not a more popular couple in DC. But the New 52 changed that. Maybe not forever but they did. Clark has feelings for her, a lot of them but she just sees him as a friend.

For Carol, the Guardians were able to use her connection to Kyle to summon her to help them save Kyle. She admits her love for him in the annual (scans are posted above) and she's been able to communicate with him when he was trapped in Relic's ship, something the Guardians couldn't do. Remember that her powers come from Love. So she needs to have a bond with him to be able to do this. She tried the same when Kyle was fused with all the Entities but it was blocked by Predator who controls the whole purple spectrum.

She first thought she would lose her power if she'd stop loving Hal but after their break up, she probably kept her power by having feelings for Kyle. And to me, they fit better for the main reason that Kyle understands her better for being part of the Star Sapphire corps as well and must have plenty of love within.

And I gotta agree with whoever said that Hal Jordan's is a **** in the New 52. DC has been trying so many different combination in the past. Like Batman and Wonder Woman. The proofs were there. There was so many showing, I'm surprised they didn't pursue it in the New 52.

Anyway, Guy being part of the Red's was a surprise but he fits well.

Now I can't wait for the New Guardians comic coming out in a month.... that's way too long.

The endin Johns wrote was ****ing dumb. It pigeonholed a lot of characters and did diservice to a lot of characters. The current writers are much better than the old ones. Johns was being a baby and trying to screw over the sales of the new regime by giving people a jumping off point. Who does that? And do you really want to read a book in which the ending has been given to you? Also, retcons are not new to comics.

I don't mean to sound harsh or like a dick.

GL Annual 2 was downright fantastic today. LOTS of great character moments and the characterization of the heroes was strong. We are definitely looking at a new status quo.

@misterwizz: well following a successful run is bound to be divisive amongst fans especially after someone like Johns who remade the universe into something so rarely accomplished. No one will ever compare to Johns in those respects as he created this vast universe we all know and love now.

But V-Ditti is doing a great job and IMO, once people stop expecting more Johns' GL, they'll realize how good this new stuff really is.

@shadowhuntr:

Well I'm never gonna be a fan of that pairing. No matter what anyone says. Carol admitted her love for Hal, and they were basically meant to be together (this is actually said in the comics).

I found the Carol / Kyle thing stupid, and the annual didn't change that. It came off as being forced. Thankfully it's likely going to be retconned (duh!).

I'm considering dropping the main GL book altogether. Robert Venditti isn't leaving much of an impression on me (his writing is good for the most part I'll give him that).

Bye!

Because Baz is protecting Earth

And he's doing such a good job being imprisoned by the Crime Syndicate. I really liked how Johns introduced Baz in the Third Army event as I felt it was the last spark of creative writing Johns had in him for the Lantern universe before he went downhill in the New 52. The way Baz has been imprisoned by the Syndicate is really disappointing to his character even though he's supposed to train this new female Lantern.
