Interview: Cullen Bunn on Taking Over MOON KNIGHT

We find out what the upcoming new writer thinks of the complex character.

Last week the news came out that as of issue #13, Cullen Bunn would be the new writer for MOON KNIGHT with Ron Ackins doing the art and Jordie Bellaire still on colors.

Brian Wood and Greg Smallwood still have a few more issues before the change so we'll have to wait to see what explosive finale they have planned (issue #10 is on sale this week). We did ask Cullen a few questions to find out what his take is on the character.

COMIC VINE: What’s your take on Moon Knight? How do you see him as a character?

CULLEN BUNN: Moon Knight is a character who should take you off guard. You should never be too sure if what he is seeing is real or just in his head. He might be talking to his god… or he might just be talking to himself. Maybe he was raised from the dead by the aspect of Khonshu… or maybe he dreamed all that. That’s the approach I’m taking with this book. I will not be asking those questions directly, but readers will hopefully be wondering about these answers themselves.

CV: Will you be doing the self-contained type issues or have more of an ongoing story arc?

CB: There are some overarching themes and questions over the course of my arc, but each of the five issues will be self-contained.

CV: Will Marc Spector remain in New York after the “shocking events” from MOON KNIGHT #12?

CB: Marc will remain in New York, but he’s still going to have a change of scenery.

CV: Do you plan to bring in any of Moon Knights allies to help him in this time or will he pick up the pieces on his own?

CB: Moon Knight is on his own.

Or is he?

You won’t really be seeing any of Moon Knight’s classic allies—aside from Khonshu, obviously—but he might have some new allies or wards at his side. We’ll be seeing some strange companions showing up early in the first issue of my arc.

CV: You tend to write a lot of complex characters that straddle the line of hero and villain. Will you be delving into the complexities of Moon Knight’s psyche?

CB: I hope so. While Moon Knight isn’t an anti-hero like some of the characters I write, but he still struggles with some of his decisions. In this series, those struggles will arise from his interpretation of his faith. He’s Khonshu’s priest, but his faith is failing him. He’s starting to wonder if his own faith isn’t just another aspect of his fractured mind.

CV: We haven’t really seen any supervillains in this volume. Will any former or new villains appear or will Marc be too busy dealing with personal problems to take any on?

CB: Marc will have a lot of personal problems to deal with, but he’ll be locking horns with some new supervillains along the way.

CV: What are you most looking forward to in writing this series?

CB: I am excited about some of the religious connotations we get to play with in the series. I really get to define some of Khonshu’s tenets. I’ll also be thrilled for readers to meet some of the new villains I’ll be introducing.

MOON KNIGHT #13 is on sale March 18, 2015. Mark your calendar.
