Are you ready to submit to the Black Vortex?

No Caption Provided

This February, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the All-New X-Men, Nova, Captain Marvel, Cyclops and more team up for a cosmic throwdown the likes of which have never been seen in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY & X-MEN: THE BLACK VORTEX! Today, Marvel is proud to present your very first look at the cover to GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY & X-MEN: THE BLACK VORTEX ALPHA #1, the highly anticipated first issue in the upcoming crossover from fan-favorite writer Sam Humphries and blockbuster artist Ed McGuinness!

The Black Vortex, an ancient artifact of immense and immeasurable power has resurfaced on the far side of the galaxy. With the power to unlock it’s users true cosmic potential, in the wrong hands, the Black Vortex’s power could be a force of unparalleled destruction. Imagine the power that transformed Jean Grey into the Phoenix or Norin Radd into the Silver Surfer available to anyone, and in the hands of those who would use it for evil!

“What happens when one person submits to the Black Vortex and becomes a titan of the cosmos?” asks Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: The Black Vortex Alpha writer Sam Humphries in an interview with Marvel.com. “What happens when a whole team does it. Or a whole planet? But against the epic scale, we’re grounding the story in the deeply personal conflict each character will go through just by encountering the Black Vortex.”

The Black Vortex has been claimed by the villainous gangster Mr. Knife and Thane, the wayward son of Thanos. With billions of lives across the universe at stake, it will take the combined might of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the X-Men and more to stem the coming darkness.

Kicking off in this special Alpha issue and continuing through some of your favorite Marvel titles including Guardians of the Galaxy, Legendary Star-Lord, All-New X-Men, Captain Marvel, Nova, Cyclops and more, be there for the beginning of the next great out-of-this-world crossover when GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY & X-MEN: THE BLACK VORTEX ALPHA #1 hits comic shops and digital devices this February!

Jean must be pulling her hair out at the art.

Or the event itself...

I think Cap. Marvel is part of the GotG so her title may survive but poor Cyclops will definitely fell into the black vortex of events and crossovers at Marvel.

Marvel and DC might as well release all of their monthly's in one big volume each rather than separately because they sure do try to make you buy everything, crossover after crossover. Could be good but it would be nice to read a title without having to buy 5 others just to keep up with the story.

@squalleon: I think Captain Marvel has solo issues in this. She's barely been involved in the Guardians Of The Galaxy comic since she "joined", which makes her inclusion in this seem a bit weird.

Hopefully this is a good story. I dislike crossovers, particularly when I have to buy from series I don't normally read.

I wish. Sadly, I'm not expecting it to do much other than sit around and be "super-duper-totally-dangerous-guyz" and then get stuffed into the Closet of Dangerous Artifacts alongside the cosmic cube.

@drellassassin: all for the sake of fanservice.
which is so stupid because she's going for an awkward sey pose yet her character is more serious.

lol this looks like a terrible/lame cast for a cosmic event. Where are beta ray bill, gladiator, ronan, k'lrt, surfer, muthflarkin Quasar, or any of the REAL cosmic heroes? No me gusta

The problem is that NONE of the writers involved know how to write Sci-Fi :/ I'm sure somehow Captain America will show up last minute to save the day.

What I do like: Starjammers ftw! Also, even though I despise Guardians of the Bendis, any new cosmic event keeps me hopeful that the line will continue on.

Poor Magik is breaking her spine.

She had to make sure we could see her butt otherwise it would be a bad cover and no one would like Magik.

While "Spine-Bending Magick" is obviously the star of this cover, and deservedly so, I feel she's drawing some much deserved attention away from "Crooked-Eyed Kitty"

(Seriously what happened here? Usually Ed Mcguinness is an all-star, but he must have really not cared about this cover)

There are several characters in this story I really like. But... this story does sound pretty lame. Especially considering how of all the cosmic heroes in the universe, THESE are the characters chosen??? Boo, I say. Just, Boo.

I'm asking seriously: is Sam Humphries really a fan favorite writer? Because from what I've read, I can't stand him. When he took over the Ultimates from Hickman he seemed like more of an alchemist than a writer (by turning gold into a turd).

I could be wrong, but I'm been really disappointed by his work.

@tmul501: Well I don't know how well his current Star Lord series is doing, but pretty much everything he's written for Marvel has either been critically panned or really undersold (or both). To call him a "fan favorite" is quite the exaggeration, though I guess they can't put "barely successful cult writer" in a press release :P

(in fairness, I really did like his Uncanny X-Force run)

There are only two characters in this event that I'm currently invested in, whose titles I'm buying- & that's Legendary Star-Lord & Rocket Raccoon. (Not sure if RR will have x-over issues, not confirmed yet.) I dropped GOTG a long while back, & only picked it up again to find out the final fate of Richard Rider(Thanks a lot, Bendis!) then dropped it again. I'm fine with the event as long as it doesn't change anything in Legendary Star-Lord or RR adversely. If it does Marvel, I swear:

I agree with you there! The point of Marvel cosmic is that it should be freakin' COSMIC. Bendis doesn't get that about GOTG, which is why his take of the team(love what you said, Guardians of the Bendis btw lol) pales in comparison to the greatness that was the DnA series. I agree, we need to see the Surfer, the Annihilators, Warlock, & the real deal Nova, Richard freakin' Rider!! (And no offense to the X-Men, but what are they doing there? They aren't cosmic characters! The only correlation I can see is Bendis writing GOTG & All-New X-Men.) The Annihilation-era cosmic books were really a great sci-fi renaissance period, I miss it so much, & there is really a demand for it- so much potential, Marvel just needs to get writers that can write sci-fi adventure/cosmic opera epics!! But, as you said, any new cosmic event gives me hope the line will continue on in some form; I think if GOTG had a more sci-fi oriented writer behind it, & used the popularity of the title/characters to jumpstart a major cosmic event more in the vein of Annihilation, it'd make all the difference.
