Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Will not be a Prequel to Avengers: Infinity War

Director James Gunn comes out again about whether his films will tie into the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With the Marvel cinematic universe so connected, many fans are wondering where does that leave Guardians of the Galaxy. Director James Gunn came out in the past saying the after the credits sequence is merely for fun and has no barring on future stories. Now, with the reveal of the title of the third Avengers film (Infinity War), fans are wondering if that will be when they get to see the Guardians team up with the Avengers? In short, no.

During an episode of The Q&A podcast with Jeff Goldsmith, Gunn came out to say that the series is more worried about developing their side of the universe rather than connecting everything. Here's what he said in the interview, transcribed by ComicBook.com:

The last thing I said was something about how the Guardians, we really are mostly focused on creating the Guardians as their own separate universe, creating the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe. It isn’t all about leading towards Avengers. We’re not subservient to The Avengers. Whether or not at some point, some Guardians and some Avengers meet up and meet somewhere in the world, whether it’s two years from now, three years from now, four years from now, fifteen years from now…I’m not going to say. But Guardians of the Galaxy does not exist as a prequel to Avengers 3 and 4. They have their own thing that they’re involved in. They have their own mythos that they’re involved in. They have their own stories that are equally important.

This isn't the first time Gunn has said something about GotG being on it's own. He also came out to talk about whether or not the tone of GotG 2 would be any different, depending on what happens in Avengers: Age of Ultron:

It’s trying to make it effect it as little as possible. We really are separate from the Avengers, and I don’t think people should assume too many things about the Guardians play in all this. We have our own galaxy to take care of. We have our own galaxy to save. Earth is the Avengers’ province. Thinking that everything is going to come together in a perfect way is not necessarily the way it’s going to happen.

Guardians of the Galaxy is more about building and not about connecting. Gunn wants to build a whole cosmic universe and GotG was just a first step in that direction. What do you think about Guardians being separate from the rest of the Marvel cinematic universe? Let us know!

Of course they won't attach to each other in the next couple of years. GotG 2 or Avengers 2. But they absolutely will be a part of the 2-film Avengers 3.

We'll see what they actually do but I can see a value in having a movie series that isn't beholden to Avengers centered films. Crossovers can be really fun but they can also be exhausting to keep up with after a certain point and sometime make for an awkward fit. GotG can survive as it's own thing. If a x-over happens eventually that's great but with a limited number of minutes in a film I'd rather they do the story they want to do rather than trying to shoehorn in anything.

He's bluffing. If he's not, then what was all that Infinity Stone stuff about with Thanos if it's not setting up for Infinity War?

I honestly couldn't care less if it connected to Avengers or not. There's SO many other things that can be done with Guardians of the Galaxy on their own.

Earth is part of the same galaxy, so there is promise there. Especially since the Avengers have a tendency to leave Earth every once in awhile.

I care. The whole entire point of MCU is comicbook-like connectivity. THAT'S what make MCU kick the s*** outta whatever DC thinks they are doing. DC already has like 6 "universes" and I can definitely see a different actor playing Flash on the big screen than on the TV series. That's cool and all but it really takes you out of the story. The GotG BETTER be crossing over.

I'm really hoping they adapt Annihilation at some point in GOTG, I mean if they're going to make a Civil War movie, why can't they make an Annihilation one?

It's a dumb idea. U can build whatever u want with GOTG but the avengers and GOTG coming together to stop thanos in a two part movie isn't a bad idea

I think some people are reading too far into his comments, its not like he said there will be absolutely no connections at all, rather he is emphasizing that the sequel will be able to stand on its own independently, probably much in the same way the first movie did. Guardians is a Marvel movie, probably the majority of journalists and questions he receives are about how upcoming movies are going to integrate into Avengers… because… Avengers. So from the sounds of it Guardians of the Galaxy II won't be that movie, which doesn't have to be a bad or good thing, doesn't mean that it won't have some small connections, just means it won't have huge plot important connections requiring someone to watch it or Avengers in order to understand it or other movies.

@sc: Indeed.

I think Gunn is trying to get across that even if its an MCU-movie it doesn't have to be "shotgun married" to Avengers & IM.

  1. Either they are lying. Because c'mon, how can guardians not be involved in infinity war. Thats stupid. The guy whose life goal is to kill thanos and the daughter of thanos is on the that team.
  2. Or Infinity war is much smaller problem as compared to the comics. It may not be a threat to the universe. Which again, is stupid!
  3. My third theory is that something really bad is going to happen to the team in GOG2 which will cause them to miss out on the events of infinity war. Which will be unfortunate and will make me very very VERY sad.

Wasn't Guardians of the Galaxy already a prequel of sorts for The Avengers 3 with the Infinity Stone storyline? What else needs to be said?

It's the same as The Avengers hinting at Thanos while Age of Ultron is about, well, Ultron.

This! But they'll have to establish Rich as NOVA, maybe even throw in Phyla, Firelord, and/or Super Skrull. Now that will be epic.

Agreed. I think this is pretty understandable. It' great to have an interconnected universe, but he wants to make great single movies, that are great movies that can stand on their own, not beholden to anything else. That doesn't mean they don't connect, as GOTG connected with the Infinity Stones, Thanos & the Collector, but what he is trying to achieve is entertaining, quality movies you can enjoy on their own, with their own merits. Just like Cap:TWS is connected to everything in the MCU, & affected the MCU & is still affecting it, it is still an awesome movie to watch on its own merits. The same with GOTG, & he wants that to go for the 2nd film. I totally understand what he means, there are so much to do with the characters from the first film alone, things to flesh out, as well as introduce some new characters. There is plenty that can be done with the GOTG & the cosmic side of the MCU alone(since it is new territory) without tying them to the Avengers...just yet. I think the GOTG, or at least some of their members, will be a part of the Infinity War, but he is focusing on the here & now, the next GOTG installment, & making it quality; Avengers:IW Parts 1 & 2 are a few years down the road, & who knows what could happen between then. I think Mr. Gunn knows what he's doing, I understand what he's trying to achieve, but people shouldn't worry; his comments don't rule out the two teams, in some form, teaming up when the time comes. I may be one of the minority here, but in some ways I'm looking forward to GOTG2 more than A:AOU. (Not to say that I'm not freakin' stoked about that movie, either!)

I like the decision. It would be disrespectful to the GOTG if it was just a set up movie like Captain America one was to avengers.

Literally was going to say I want an Annihilation and Annihilation Conquest movie(s). Imagine them shipping Ultron off into space or something at the end of two and them the GotG finding him trying to take over the universe? Beautiful….

is it too early to say I am already sick of the Infinity Gems & Thanos, & want the Marvel movie-Verse to move on? On their own, Thor & Captain America movies are NOT that good, & really this entire thing is held together by the Avengers movie & IronMan. So I doubt Panther Antman or MsMarvel will be any better. & then Marvel will screw everything up by miss-handling DrStrange, we ALL know they'll make his "magic" be advanced alien tech like Smallville did with Lana the Witch.

& then lets not even start with how DC will muck up everything.

So hopefully Marvel DOES keep GOG as seperate from the Avengers as possible. & they should do that with DrStrange & the magical side as well. & another thing, keep Spiderman OUT of the Avengers realted movies.
