First Look: CIVIL WAR II: GODS OF WAR #1

Hercules joins in the battle. Whose side is he on?

No Caption Provided

The world stands upon the brink of chaos. As friend stands against friend…which side with the world’s very first super hero land? Find out as Hercules storms the front lines in CIVIL WAR II: GODS OF WAR #1, coming to comic shops and digital devices this June! Writer Dan Abnett and artist Emilio Laiso bring Hercules directly into the conflict of the biggest comic event of the year. Could a God tip the scales in Captain Marvel or Iron Man’s favor?

“Herc is loyal”, says writer Dan Abnett in an interview with Marvel.com. “Picking a side for him is a simple thing. But when the sides aren’t good and evil, that troubles him. To him, a [Civil War II] kind of rift where heroes are in conflict with other heroes – he’s got friends on both sides, and friends or not, he recognizes them all as fellow heroes – is just plain wrong.”

As war grips the Marvel Universe, Hercules will ask himself – what role should a God play in the conflict of mortals? Is he responsible for a larger role in the potential destruction of the Marvel Universe? Or should he intervene and change history? Joined by fellow Gods Gilgamesh, Sigurd, Lorelei, Beowulf and Theseus – Hercules and his pantheon of ancient comrades charge headlong into battle. With the heart and soul of the Marvel Universe at stake – these immortal warriors could turn the tide for either team. But which side are they on?

The Gods march to war this June. Be there as the battle kicks off in CIVIL WAR II: GODS OF WAR #1!

Hercules, female Thor and Hulk, how very unpredictable. At least we are seeing some of other gods.

If this is where I have to go to continue reading the adventures of Hercules, so be it. That said, I was really hoping to be able to avoid this second Civil War altogether.

@ready_4_madness: Thats a tablet...

Maybe it's a Phablet? Cho seems like he'd be a phablet kind of guy.

It's likely a phablet. There's actually phones that size in China, so it's probably an import.

How's Totally Awesome Hulk been? And what happened to Banner?

I LOVED the first arc and this is coming from a guy who wasn't in favor of the book when first announced. Banner absorbed a bunch of radiation in order to save millions of people. The excessive radiation was killing him and he was a ticking time bomb. Stark and T'Challa couldn't find a way to save him but Cho figured out a way and transferred "The HULK" Gamma radiation from Banner to himself. This happened via flashbacks during the 8 month gap post Secret Wars. Banner hasn't been seen in the present yet.

I am looking forward to Hercules, even though Amadeus being part of the team here makes sense given their history and Amadeus current power being able to hang around guys like Hercules i still hate that he is here cause i can't stand him. He was much better as just Amadeus, when he became the Hulk he also became very, very annoying.

How's Totally Awesome Hulk been? And what happened to Banner?

It's been quite boring and underwhelming... with only something interesting finally happening in last issue. Banner is MIA as or now, Amadeus took away his Hulk form in the dumbest easiest way imaginable which makes me shake my head in disbelief. I honestly hope the book get's canceled soon and considering it's dropping readers fast it just might.

@ducey13: has any of the Doc Green stuff been addressed?

Nope, not a single thing. They mentioned Doc Green once as in they mentioned the cure he made for himself to help BannerHulk but it was useless so they mentioned him for like a moment and then dropped him like a bad habit.

No. Seems like Marvel doesn't want to address anything from Pre-Secret Wars. They want stories to start with a fresh beginning.

See that is annoying. I hate it when stories don't have a proper follow-through. Maybe I'm just being impatient but I'm actually staring to get worried that they won't even bother giving us a proper explanation for all the character changes that happened during the "8 month gap" after Secret Wars. Like I understand appealing to bigger audiences but don't throw core fans under the bus in the process. I mean so many stories feel unfinished to the point of irritation, from what happened to the Banner A.I. Gammon, to what exactly happened to Cyclops and Havok prior to and after Secret Wars, to what DD did to trick the world, it feels so alienating. And it's especially not helped by the fact that while Miles, Ganke, and I think Bombshell survived the post-Secret Wars changes, a bunch of other cool characters like Ultimate Jessica Drew and Ultimate Cloak and Dagger (who I've come to kind of like more than their 616 versions) didn't. I get why they didn't but it still kind of sucks.

I get what your saying. I'm still waiting to learn what Nick Fury said to THOR to make him Unworthy. I assume that Jason Aaron will get around to it eventually since he's still on the Thor book but it's going on a couple years now.

I HATED the Doc Green story so much though that I just want to forget about it. What was the whole point of that story? Did someone at Marvel hate Red Hulk, Skaar, and Red She-Hulk that much?

Uncanny Avengers is bringing Hank Pym back with his Ultron Symbiote from how RAGE OF ULTRON ended so I'm happy that won't become an abandoned storyline.

Maybe there's a chance Reed and Sue will rebuild the Ultimate Universe like they seem to be doing with the Multiverse right now.

@shinobi62676: Now I remember what' really been bothering me. AXIS! Iron Man, Havok, and Sabretooth were all left inverted. Iron Man had his SUPERIOR series which was different. Sabretooth went on to join Uncanny Avengers (As a pseudo Wolverine) and they did nothing with Havok that I can remember. Now Post-Secret Wars, Tony appears to be back to normal (no explanation) yet Sabretooth is still INVERTED, and Havok is still MIA. So why is Tony back to normal but Victor isn't? Where's Havok in all this mess? Did I miss something?

And what about Katie Summers? The daughter of Havok and Wasp from the Planet X timeline? Kang rescued her from that timeline before the Uncanny Avengers restored the past. Where is she now?

It's getting interesting. Don't listen to the naysayers. They are just haters, and just find reasons to dislike Amadeus. The book actually sells consistently well, HAVEN'T DROPPED in readers at all, so people are now outright lying about the drop in readership. It has actual interesting plots and the Hulk is now incorporate his intelligence in his fights. Banner will return in the next issue of Hulk, so we'll find out what happens to him.

Sorry about responding to you so really really really really late. Also, sorry you hated the Doc Green storyline but I practically loved it. I mean sure, they were de-hulking the Hulk family, but it was also a really cool showcase of all the kinds of Gamma monsters running around and how their own personalities and agendas bounced off of a more notorious version of Banner Hulk that also carried stakes. And if you're irritated on how the story ended, well I say that it's because that wasn't a "real" ending. To me it felt like it was setting up for more intriguing things in the future that we won't get to because of this sudden creative shake up.

Speaking of creative shake-ups, I fee like Rick Remender leaving Marvel is the main reason for all your Axis and Pre-Secret Wars Uncanny Avengers frustration. I think rumor had it that for a good while it was going to be him to primarily take over the X-Men stuff, not Jeff Lemire. So if that was true, whose say how much of the questions you're asking might've been addressed by now had he stayed the course? Katie Summers, inverted Havok, Kang?

In fact, now that I'm thinking about Tom Taylor's Inverted Iron Man changing all of a sudden to Bendis' Non-Inverted Iron Man for no good reason, it seems these major creative shake-ups are the part of the problem. Which especially sucks cause I like new things in comics, but I don't like it when it's done to the detriment of good things that came beforehand. It's really annoying.
