Exclusive: New Creative Team for EARTH 2

Find out who's coming and who's staying as the series heads into World's End.

DC's been making a lot of announcements the last couple weeks. We've seen new series as well as new creative teams. People sometimes fear change but it doesn't always mean bad things.

Things have been heating up in EARTH 2. Tom Taylor and Nicola Scott have been doing big and crazy things in the series. This coming October, there will be some changes in creative team. Hold onto your hats for this. Here's the solicit info and cover for EARTH 2 #27.

EARTH 2 #27

Written by TOM TAYLOR and MARGUERITE BENNETT

Art by ANDY SMITH

Cover by GARY FRANK

World’s End is here! Everything the Wonders of Earth 2 have fought for stands to be destroyed. Be here as their powers are tested and hard choices are made!

On sale OCTOBER 8 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

Here's what Tom Taylor had to say about the change:

Val-Zod
Val-Zod

"I've just spent the weekend with my good friend, Nicola Scott, and her husband, at a convention in Melbourne, Australia, and we've had some fun late nights to reflect on a great run that we've both enjoyed so much.

The overwhelmingly positive reaction to Earth 2 #25 is something that neither one of us can really remember on any single issue of comics we've been involved in before. We seriously couldn't be happier to tell this story, and to bring it to a natural, climactic, end with #26. It feels like our run, together, is ending on a real high.

It's hard to describe just how great an opportunity it is to create characters like Aquawoman, and especially our new Superman, Val-Zod, and to have these characters welcomed and embraced by comic readers everywhere. Getting to do this with my friend, Nicola Scott, with the great support of our editor, Mike Cotton, has been a dream.

I want to say a huge thank you to Nicola for everything she's brought to Earth 2 and for everything she leaves behind. Nic has spent years helping to shape an entire world and its heroes. It's now time for her to go play on other worlds and create all new icons (although she plans on spending an entire Tuesday on a couch first).

As World's End begins, I'm rapt to be working closely on the monthly book with another friend and great talent, Marguerite Bennett. And everything I've seen of Andy Smith's work tells me that Nicola is leaving our world in great hands."

We also had the chance to ask Andy some questions about taking over the art duties.

COMIC VINE: There's been a lot of destruction in this series. Are you doing anything to prep for what Tom and Marguerite might throw at you?

ANDY SMITH: First I'd like to say that I have some big shoes to fill in regards to Nicola's work on the book. She has done a magnificent job of visually creating and designing Earth 2. She has laid down a very solid foundation with the characters and settings that I hope to build upon. In terms of preparation for my tenure on the book I think with having already poured over what has been done previously in the book I'm good to go. Once I have the scripts in hand I'll treat it like any other book where I'll read over them a few times making notes along the way and collecting whatever reference I might need so I can bring as much visual credibility to the story as possible.

CV: What are you looking forward to on this title?

AS: I really like how the book is using the iconic DC Heroes but they all have a different spin and visual to them. There's just enough where you can look at the characters and know instantly who they are while still having a unique visual that sets them apart from the main DC universe. I really like the designs of the characters and am looking forward to putting my take on them.

CV: Any plans on making any tweaks to character designs? (Assuming people survive Worlds End).

AS: When it comes to tweaking an existing design of a character there is always going to be a small amount because my art style is different from what was in the book previously. Any other changes to a characters look is something that I would only do if the story or editorial called for it. I'd rather not change anything unless there is a specific reason to behind it.

CV: Will we see any new characters debuting?

AS: If I answered that I could be giving something away and no way am I going to do that. However as an artist I would love to see brand new characters or new takes on existing DC Heroes that have yet to make their Earth 2 debut.

Hmm...sounds like we some stuff to look forward to. EARTH 2 #27 is on sale October 8.

And now it seems that Earth Two is going to be destroyed in the World's End weekly with survivors migrating to the mainstream Earth, like in Futures End. I'm guessing this is an editorial mandate and is why Robinson left in the first place. He couldn't tell the story he wanted to tell in under thirty issues.

I really wish they didn't have to do that it just seems unnecessary I'm still waiting for Marvel to combine the Ultimate and 616 universe because it seems that's where they're are going and besides Miles Morales no one cares about the Ultimate universe anymore.

When I saw the title of this article part of me thought they had taken Taylor off the book. I still read this book and my excitement has definitely gone back up after the most recent issue. But when Robinson was writing it, he seemed to be building mysteries and adding characters much more slowly, with the intent of having a climax at some point. But the second Taylor took over it turned into a very different kind of book which I still enjoy, but I think it would have been better if we had gotten to see what Robinson had planned. The tone definitely shifted to crisis mode well before it would have if Robinson's original plans had been allowed to come to fruition. But the real kicker is that a bunch of plot threads were discarded or put on the backburner for so long. While the whole Worlds End thing may be a good story, Earth Two under Robinson certainly had a lot of potential to continue indefinitely. I think if they had intended this from the beginning, they should have gone to a lower tier writer to begin with so that plans that would never see the light of day were not drawn up. But I guess they wanted name recognition. Robinson is doing some good work at Marvel now though on Fantastic Four and All-New Invaders.

@dernman: exactly what I'm thinking about people complaining that Tony S. Daniels is writing Deathstroke, the book is out in October and people are already complaining.

Nope i love it as well people really need to stop crying and actually pick up the book and see whats it about instead of listening to word of mouth, also the evil Superman was Robinson's idea not Taylors thats the direction he was heading in.

Or perhaps we just got bored of that one story Taylor hasnt finished yet about how powerful Superman is, how he loves to break things and how the world cant function without a kryptonian to protect it.

Thomas Wayne and Evil Clark Kent may have been Robinsons ideas, but they overstayed their welcome under Taylor.

Agreed.

Also I have no idea where the idea came from that the people voicing a negative opinion haven't read the book. Defensive wishful thinking?

@doombot890: Yea I would rather like to see focus on other characters. I hate that Hawk-girl moved from being one of the important characters to a background character. Otgher than tha, I don't care as long as the writing is good.

@madeinbangladesh: no I like some of Tom's stuff too but I do not like he sudden focus on Bats and Supes....I do love the fact that they have a New Superman (both a Black guy and apart of the Zod family!) but for the most part what drew me to this book is the fact that Bats and Supes died in the first issue...a DC comic book without the trinity was just too good of a dream :(

i was afraid Tom Taylor was leaving the book. I'm really enjoying his Earth 2 so much more than Robinson's run. He's an excellent writer. Dammit, I'm gonna miss Nicola Scott's art. This new art looks generic.

@outside_85: Taylor isn't leaving the book. Bennett is joining him as a co-writer. That's probably due to him being on the World's End weekly and Injustice going back to being weekly. I doubt the focus of the book would change if Taylor left but the Editorial team stayed.

Tom Taylor leaves Earth 2: Good, turning focus onto Evil Superman, Old Batman and Replacement Superman just killed the original interest I had in the book (being 'a world without the Trinity') and turned it into Injustice: Massive Destruction Edition. So I really hope Bennett takes the story and the focus somewhere else... though it doesn't seem like it.

Nicola Scott leaves Earth 2: Sad to hear, one of the best artists DC has and I will be sure to check out what she's doing next.

@patrat18: I have only read the first six issues, so far it's one of my favorite DC books, how is the series after James Robinson leaves?

Pretty damn good. The plot moves slowly, but in a interesting way. I would highly recommend it.

Earth 2's biggest mistake was bringing Batman, Superman's archtypes back. They need to get away from that and focus on the other JSA characters again not to mention those not introduced yet. Also Earth 2 needs to stop being DC version of the Ult universe and killing off characters like Atom.

Earth 2 was about a world that survived and was rebuilding after an apocalypse (which was nice and it had hope) and now they're going through another?

I don't keep track of names much but I hope this new creative team takes the book in a better direction.

I've enjoyed Bennett's work on the Lois Lane and Joker's Daughter one-shots but I'm not sure she has it in her to take on this book. I mean, this series has really taken what we love and appreciate about the JSA and just made their lives extreme hell. To further torture these wonderful characters, does she have it in her?

But really, I hope she actually gives this book a focus because I feel like since issue 1 people are just spewing out issues not knowing where the hell they're going to take it because I think everyone now just assumes DC is going to kill the series early next year.

Here's hoping the direction of the book gets better with this new team. I don't like the focus being so much on Superman and Batman when there were so many other storylines and characters that didn't get touched on (never got to learn much about Red Arrow). Loved the series when Robinson was on it, but since then, it's been lackluster.
