Exclusive: Marvel Announces X-MEN: WORST X-MAN EVER with Max Bemis and Michael Walsh

Details for this upcoming miniseries are revealed.

At the Diamond Retailer Presentation in the UK, Marvel has announced an upcoming miniseries--X-MEN: WORST X-MAN EVER. This will be a digital first miniseries starting in December with a printed version of the issues beginning in February. The series will be written by Max Bemis, singer of Say Anything and writer of OH, KILLSTRIKE, with art by Michael Walsh (HANK JOHNSON: AGENT OF HYDRA).

The series will focus on Bailey Hoskins, who just discovered he's a mutant. He's never been an above average kid and soon finds himself at Xavier's School for Gifted Children. With this being the actual headquarters of the X-Men, Bailey will discover he may actually be the worst X-Men ever.

We had the chance to talk to editor Jordan D. White about the series.

No Caption Provided

COMIC VINE: Where does this story fit in with what’s happening to the X-Men currently?

JORDAN D. WHITE: Given the story he wanted to tell, we decided to give Max the opportunity to bring us his own take on the X-Men, which is very much a sort of evergreen “Best of” situation. We’ve got X-Men from all eras in here, all coming together to tell the story of Bailey Hoskins, our main character...who fears he may be the worst X-Man ever.

CV: Max Bemis is largely known as the singer for Say Anything but has written other comics (plus an A+X story). How was he brought on to this project?

JORDAN: The fact is that Max is a HUGE comic book fanatic. We will occasionally get celebrities coming through the offices for tour because they are fans of our work...and Max did just that, but said he wanted to make sure to meet with editors because he was determined to write for us. As you said, he did an A+X story for me before, and I’ve read his work for BOOM! like EVIL EMPIRE and Oh, Killstrike, and I’ve really enjoyed it. You can tell he knows his stuff.

CV: Did Max come up with the character and powers for Bailey Hoskins?

JORDAN: You’d have to ask him for the details on that one. All I can say for sure is that he’s a very identifiable character, personality-wise...and that his powers are a big part of why things don’t go as expected for him.

CV: What will be the tone of the limited series?

JORDAN: Great question. I think it’s a misfit story, and since it’s an X-Men story, it’s really a story about a misfit among misfits. He’s the outcast of the outcast. He doesn’t fit in with the others that don’t fit in. So, it’s a very modern story, a relatable story...and like a lot of X-Men stories, it’s about growing up, and the ways that can go wrong. It’s dark, but still fun. For anyone who ever wondered where they belonged, this is for you.

CV: Will Michael Walsh get the chance to draw other familiar characters and cameos?

JORDAN: For sure! There are a TON of X-characters spread across this series. If you have a favorite X-Man, I would say there is...an 80% chance they will put in an appearance. And Michael is knocking it out of the park!

CV: We haven’t seen many Digital Firsts (followed by print) at Marvel. Why was this series chosen for this type of distribution?

JORDAN: Marvel’s got a lot going on right now with all the new titles—it would be easy for a series like this to get lost in the shuffle without a proper spotlight shone on it. This way we can draw attention to a slightly off-kilter project while still getting the story to both the digital and print audiences. In addition—like you said—Max Bemis has a lot of fans from outside the comics community who might want to check out his take on the X-Men, and picking up comics digitally is even easier for new readers.

CV: Could we possible see more miniseries (Digital First or otherwise) focusing on new or non-mainstream characters?

JORDAN: That’s a great question—I think the only way to find out is to see how this goes! Fingers crossed!

Be sure to look for X-MEN: WORST X-MAN EVER #1, a Digital First series, beginning in December. We'll definitely want to find out what makes Bailey the worst X-Men ever.

We already had the worst X-Man ever and his name is Goldballs. *Shudders*

I love Michael Walsh's art, so I'll give this one a shake.

What does th inhumans promotion have to do with the Maximoffs? Why have people convinced themselves that the two are related somehow. Every new X-related book that gets announced should only help further debunk all this pointless speculation that the mutants have been replaced.

But...but...Marvel hates X-men you guys....They are only putting out this book. and All new Wolverine. And all new X-men. And extraordinary X-men. And Uncanny X-men. and maybe some Im forgetting. They are just trying to make us forget the X-men. Like when they put their top writer on The X-men with Bendis? That was to make us forget the X-men you guys.

@butters911: You forgot X-men 92 and Cable and Deadpool. Not to mention all the other Deadpool books. Peopl were really quick to consider Deadpool part of the X-related series when he supposedly died, because it "showed" that Marvel hated the Fox owned properties. Now they know he and Wolverine weren't being forced out due to film rights and so they need something to justify their paranoia. People are even saying that Bendis wrote the last X-Men badly on purpose lol. These same people fail to realize that had an equally flawed Guardians run at the same time. They also fail to accept the fact that a bunch of the X-related books in the last few years have sold poorly. IIRC, Storm, X-Men, All-New X-factor, Cable and the X-force etc. we're all selling below cancellation numbers. Despite this fact some X-Men fans still don't understand why there are less X-books post secret wars. Why in the world would Marvel or any company keep flooding the market with a series of books that continue to undersell? All they've been doing the last few years is milking the X-Men name for all its worth and ultimately diluting the best parts of it. Now it "seems" they want make things grounded and cohesive and they are getting flack for it.

@koays: Complaint about content and quality could be lobbied at the Guardians books as well. The X-Men aren't the only ones who had their storylines derailed by bad writers.

Not anywhere near the levels of X-Men i assure you. Guardians can have a bad book, or a book where the fans don't get exactly what they want. But until the guardians have 6 books and the best book is the one where a villain who has never met the main character or showed interest in his causes spends his last days alive trying to kill him and ONLY gives "Because I hate you" as you as the completely serious answer.....and it's NOT played for laughs. Then the guardians don't have a clue about content and quality issues.

You can say that X-Men are ok because they're getting alot of titles...but that doesn't add up with the fact that in a little over a year 6 books were canceled. 2 had different creative teams for each arc which ignored the previous works, and the final 2 are Bendis titles that are some of the worst received and most poorly written books in Marvel and are the "Flagship titles". I may not agree with the crazy "Marvel is out to get us..." crowd, but there is nothing in comics comparable to the insanity that has been the last 5 years of X-Men.

@koays: Arguing about which group is getting it worse is pointless because of the subjectivity of the entire thing. There could easily be someone out there who really liked Bendis' run on X-Men. Likewise, someone could see Bendis' run on Guardians as an absolute travesty due to all the abandoned plot-line from the DnA run and rewritten origins of certain characters.

Your point about the 6 titles being cancelled only illustrates the problem surrounding the X-Men franchise. Practically all the books that were cancelled were books that fans asked for at some point. However, due to the fact that over half those books didn't play any significant role in the flagship story-line, readers eventually dropped them. I agree that the number of books doesn't really matter. I personally would rather each group, X-Men, Avengers, Inhumans, Squadron Supreme, Spider-Man ect. Have a maximum of 4 books, most of which dealing the the main plot-lines addressed in the flagship book. The few books that don't follow along the primary continuity should be solos, that mainly serve to deepen the understanding of a character. This will likely never happen though, because Marvel, like most companies, likes money and if that means we have to have 8 Spider-Man related titles then that's what we're get, unfortunately.

@child_of_the_past: I mean don't get me wrong, I agree with the sentiment. But I feel theres a difference for when you've had something that works and it starts falling apart. The X-Men averaged between 6 and 8 titles since 2001 not including solos, and they all worked... with most of them being highly praised by fans and critics during that 10 year time frame. But it's been this recent string where things hit a new low and it just happens to coincide with the re-invigoration of the Avengers and other MCU properties that has sort of left people feeling like the attention of the higher ups isn't on the decline.

Traditionally, the X-Men has always been a rather larger franchise having 3 spin off titles in the 80's when having 2 books was a BIG deal and only expanding more and more. So we know it can work...it just doesn't seem like anyone has been trying. Between major characters being written off the team and into other books, minor characters not getting any exposure in their own books, and creative changes, cancelations and relaunches being done before any progress can be made in the books...well it feels more like a failure of the X-Men Offices to recognize the problem rather then anything in the fandom. Because at the end of the day, if you can make 5 X-Men or spiderman titles and their all good...why wouldn't they sell?

@child_of_the_past Yeah, x-fans are so paranoid! Obviously there are less x-books because x-books don't sell. They follow that logic with all of their books.

That's why Marvel has cut down x-books from 10 to 5. Why wouldn't Marvel cut down books for a franchise that can't keep those books afloat.

And why would Marvel increase the number of Inhumans books from 2 to 5 when they barely manage to keep those 2 above the cancellation line. It would be totally illogical. Oh wait...

Well, they totally are following that logic with Captain Marvel by relaunching it for the 4th time it has dropped below the cancellation line in as many years. No, wait...

Well, at least they cancelled all F4 books because they didn't sell! And it's not like they would have any reason to treat F4 any different to other MCU related titles. Just like they have no reason to treat X-Men any different from all the MCU related titles. Oh wait...

@tommy_x: Lol what seem to be ignoring is that every other series Marvel is pushing has around the same number of books. One of the Inhuman books you are counting is Ms. Marvel, which has certainly proven itself. Karnak is being helmed by Ellis, so it will definitely sell. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is an all-ages book for Christ sake. Marvel always pushes properties that will have films, this isn't new. Captain Marvel had a pretty mediocre run recently and yet we are getting more of that. Also, Guardians has like 7 books based on Bendis' meh run. Finally there are 7 X-related books: All-New, Uncanny, Extraordinary, All-new Wolerine, Old Man Logan, X-Men 92, The Worst X-Men, not including Deadpool and Cable.

Clearly Marvel has more incentive to keep certain books around, even if their struggling, than they do for others. They are trying to maximize their potential profits, like any company.

Also why would Marvel try to erase the X-Men but not Deadpool, a Fox own property. I don't think anyone would argue that he is more popular the X-Men, yet he has crap load of books he's featured in. Why don't X-Men fans complain about how Marvel is shoving him, or the Guardians, down our throats?

So this guy wants to crossover from singing to writing and he gets an x-book? I would think you would try out a new writer on something that you really don't care about too much or have much direction for to see if they can cut it, then move them on to more established franchises....oh wait. Why not try the rookie out on Inhumans instead of letting him experiment on Xmen?
