Exclusive Interview: Peter David on DEADPOOL'S ART OF WAR

There's a new miniseries coming and Deadpool plans on writing a book.

In October we'll get to see another Deadpool miniseries. There's something that makes this one a little different. It's going to be written by Peter David (with art by Scott Koblish). We haven't seen Peter write Deadpool before so that's going to be fun to see. The four-issue series also deals with Sun Tzu's The Art of War. Here's the official synopsis:

DEADPOOL'S ART OF WAR #1

Written by PETER DAVID

Penciled by SCOTT KOBLISH

Cover by SCOTT KOBLISH

Sun Tzu’s Art of War has been called the definitive work on military strategy and tactics and has influenced leaders in both warfare and business for hundreds of years...which means it’s totally in the public domain and ripe for being ripped off by Deadpool! And what’s Deadpool’s plan to ensure his version of Art of War outsells the original? Make sure the entire world is at war when it comes out!

To find out more, we spoke with Peter about what we can expect to see in this series.

COMIC VINE: Is this the first time you’ve written a Deadpool story?

PETER DAVID: Yup. He did an off panel cameo in an issue of X-Factor, but otherwise this is my first outing with him.

CV: We’ve seen different takes on the Merc with a Mouth. How do you see him?

PD: As a combination of Ambush Bug and Wolverine. He certainly knows he's in a comic but doesn't let that affect how he goes about his business.

CV: How did the idea come about to mix Deadpool and Sun Tzu’s The Art of War?

PD: Actually, I've wanted to do a comic book version of The Art of War for many years. My idea was to illustrate the various chapters using Marvel superheroes. I was batting the idea around with Axel Alonso and it was Axel who suggested we make it the Deadpool Art of War. I immediately saw the possibilities and embraced the idea.

CV: The Art of War is divided into thirteen chapters. How many will Deadpool’s have?

PD: Thirteen. Why screw with a classic.

CV: Could Deadpool actually get his act together and release his own version of The Art of War?

PD: That's his plan. He wants to do his own take on it and publish it and make a million bucks off it.

CV: Can you tell us anyone that Deadpool will run into or interact with in this series?

PD: Pretty much everyone. Asgardians, Avengers, X-Men. Everyone's on board.

CV: Can we assume you’ll be giving Scott Koblish lots of violence, mayhem, and typical Deadpool shenanigans to draw?

PD: That's the plan.

CV: What are you most looking forward to doing in this series?

PD: Autographing it.

And we're most looking forward to reading the series. Make sure you keep an eye out for this one. It's due in October so be sure to let your local comic shop know you want them to add it to your pull list.

Too many Deadpool comics. Marvel is gonna burn out the character so fast at this rate.
Anyway Peter David is a great writer, up until now there isn't a comic from him I didn't like so this will probably be good.

Deadpool's okay and all, and I appreciate that he seems to have a large fanbase, but seriously, Marvel isn't stopping with all of these Deadpool stories. Give the guy a break.

And before anyone mentions Batman or Wolverine, yeah, I think they should take some time off now and again as well.

@wardishy: @squalleon: We're basically just getting the main DEADPOOL series and a Deadpool mini. This starts up after DEADPOOL VS X-FORCE. Marvel isn't releasing as many Deadpool comics as they were before.

I hope they finally make Deadpool into a character worthy of a large mainstream event.. siding with the Avengers or even the Xmen again to substantiate for lost time of a great character. I personally love Deadpool but I don't ever see him gradually making his way off paper into the unknown.. he's the best at what he does and I can't wait for the bright future that Deadpool definitrly has in store.

Deadpool Vs X-Force didn't even start yet and they've already announced the project two after the current one? AWESOME!

This really makes a lot of sense. I don't see how Deadpool technically having two books is over saturating fans with the character.

@arturocalakayvee:@g_man: Yeah, I get that technically he only has two books right now. That's not to say that he hasn't had one or two minis going on pretty much at all times for a while now. Feels like as soon as one ends another begins, that's all I'm saying. I'm happy for the Deadpool fans who are getting a lot of their favourite character though. And I'm sure I'll read Greg's reviews, I don't like much of Deadpool but some stuff is okay.

That's because that's what is happening. Just like in normal series, once an arc ends the next begins. His second series is just in a format of minis rather than one new on going.

@_linea_11: then don't buy it.

This is a great response to anyone whom may have a problem with the over-production. Really, it's a matter of voting with your wallet. Marvel wouldn't produce titles with consistency if they didn't meet the bottom line.

Separately, I haven't read a Deadpool title since the second series was cancelled in 2012. That said, with Peter David writing it (if you need proof of his comedic prowess, go back and read his Captain Marvel run) and it being set against Sun Tzu's treatises - it at least sounds original and fun.

Overexposure or not this sounds like a great idea for a book.

@dagmar_merrill: No. The original Art of War has thirteen chapters. Deadpool is writing his own version. I was merely asking how many chapters HIS version would have. This is a four-issue miniseries.
