I'm probably in the minority but I liked the new Stormwatch, the characters were interesting and interacted with each other pretty well, even if the story itself wasn't spectacular. I liked the new designs too. This...looks less interesting.

As a straight man, I find Apollo and Midnighter adorable and will be upset if this is not a permanent change. Can someone post that scan where the bigot starts talking trash, just to get holes (not literal ones, mind you) burned through his skull by Apollo and Midnighter?

Oh wow, I remember the Weird miniseries. Though it was cool they tried to have a character's powers somewhat physics based. I remember Batman trying to think of ways to fight him when the Weird took out a bunch of super powers. I find it amusing learning the character's been brought back when there's a discussion about should death be permanent.

:D the blond hair on the second cover must have been a coloring error, white hair AND halo! yay! I am glad to have my boys back :)

also, lookit that, classic Wildstorm Stormwatch logo! I didn't have a problem with the new logo, but it still makes me smile.

@End_Boss: that was from one of the Kev miniseries' by Garth Ennis, don't have the page on hand, though.

: I don't think that's quite the same thing, in regards to the Weird, because when you reboot a universe, any death could have just never happened, which is what's probably happening here. He's never existed in the DCU until now using the current continuity, so it's not like he's being resurrected in the same way that, say, Phoenix gets resurrected from time to time. Now, the Engineer is a bit different, in that she was alive and then died IN the New 52. She died in issue 18. We saw her body. But there she is on the cover, alive and well. But this seems to be a similar situation to the New 52, just on a smaller scale, where history is being rewritten, and her death never happened in the rewritten history so... it's weird.

Holy freaking 90's! I have a few questions

  1. WHAT?!
  2. WHY?!?!?!
  3. NO, SERIOUSLY, WHAAAAAAT and WHYYYYYYYYYY?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stuff like this is why I said adding Wildstorm characters into the DCU was stupid, and Jim Lee's way of making more money on characters he owned the rights to. Name ONE Wildstorm character in the New52 who doesn't suck, is critically integrated into the DC universe now, and improved both themselves and the characters they're tied to by being added post-New52.

Because it sucked. seriously. It objectively sucked. I'm not even talking from a 'but they changed them!' standpoint, even though that is a factor for me, but even if we pretend these are totally new characters, and ignore comparing them to their Wildstorm selves, (even though the WS versions are vastly superior, imo) it was just badly written (to be fair, I think this at least partly had to do with editorial, and it got a new editor right before this, but still) and often badly drawn. They never explored any of their backstories beyond a few small hints here and there, with the exception of the Engineer, and that was just so they could set up her going evil, and then she died. Tell me, how did these versions of Apollo, Midnighter, or Jack get their powers? You can't because it's never been explained, but it clearly can't be the same as it was before. This isn't the Justice League where most of them have solo books to explore their histories, how their powers work etc. it all has to be done in THIS book, and we got next to nothing. The characterization was hugely inconsistent between writers, and sometimes from the same writer, (Midnighter in particular seemed to be written in whatever way was convenient to advance the plot. Jenny also changed dramatically from Cornell to Milligan) if there was any characterization at all. (I'm looking at you, Jack, who may as well have been a cardboard cutout for all the personality you had) The dialogue was consistently atrociously bad (I mean, all the times Apollo called out his powers.... SERIOUSLY? or Jack was another big offender there.) and the plots were directionless, it was going nowhere... and when it did go somewhere it generally took FOREVER. I mean it took TWENTY (including the 0 issue and Valentine's Day issue) issues to work up to a kiss between Apollo and Midnighter? Twenty? for real? (again, I suspect this had to do with constantly changing editorial direction, but still, the end result was the same) You can get by with minimal character development if the plot is strong and engaging, and you can get by with minimal plot if the characters are well rounded and interesting... but it had neither a strong plot nor well rounded/written characters (even though they SHOULD have been, they were in Wildstorm) I don't get why some people are upset, it never got developed beyond a vague idea, the characters barely advanced at all, and the changes made to them in the beginning only pissed off older fans. And a lot of that vague idea is still in place after the re-reboot, they are still a secretive organization with a long history who are protecting the Earth, and Starlin says even the Shadow Lords are still there. But we're starting from a blank slate as far as the characters go, to undo some of the poorly thought out changes to the characters, and bring Angie back. And now we at least have an in-story reason for them having completely different personalities yet again.

Sad to see the New 52 Stormwatch go but the realities of business can be harsh on superheroes who don't sell. Don't believe the Jim Starlin Stormwatch will last either so we will probably get more reboots. Dc don't have to give up on Wildstorm yet and can still try Planetary, Wetworks, Wildcats and Gen 13. Dc needs more teams like Gen 13, Blood Syndicate, Shadow Cabinet, etc. to compete with Marvel. Hopefully, new teams like Movement will last longer also.

@RayeGunn: but why replace them with their 90s selves?

I understand the book was horrible and the characters were stupid, but why not get someone with some vision for the characters to fix them? If there's no creator with a vision and passion for the characters, they shouldn't have a book!

@Fantasgasmic: But how do you know that's not what they're doing? I am not sure if Starlin is the right choice for this book, I would have preferred someone more... contemporary. But he may surprise us. I'm waiting until I see some finished interior pages before making a judgement on it's quality. The cover art is very retro, but it's the inside that's important. And the characters were so screwed up due to how they were rebooted that fixing them would take something dramatic. Like. I love the characters, but I don't know that I would have wanted to work on this book with it's current direction, because everything i liked about them is gone, and if I WAS slated to work on it, I would do something maybe not quite this dramatic, but close. The new versions failed on many levels, ugly costumes, (especially Midnighter, god, that new costume is hideous) and as I outlined above, they didn't really have much going for them in terms of history or personalities. Yet, how they were rebooted meant changing them to something more familiar would have taken some serious hoop jumping. I mean, Apollo and Midnighter only met in issue 1 of the New 52 Stormwatch when in Wildstorm they were created together, that's a HUGE departure. The old versions (and they're not '90's' really, I mean TECHNICALLY, yes, they were created in 98-99, but they're really more early 2000's. The logo is definitely 90's though.) worked, and had continued to work with minimal changes until just a couple years ago, so why NOT use them? Also, I am sure Cornell in particular did have a 'vision' for the characters and I think he liked them in his own way... but editorial got in the way of that vision and even if they hadn't, he seemed intent on change for change's sake which did not sit well with many of the characters existing fans. Or maybe that was editorial again, it's hard to tell. but this book had all the signs of a heavily editorially driven book, and I think that has ended now, with the new editor. Starlin has said he's had tremendous freedom with it, presumably because it no longer has to tie into Trinity War, which in itself should be a good sign.

I believe this change was due to the tone. When NEW 52 Stormwatch first started, the tone was much different then anyone really expected from it. It has been very watered-down. Doing this seems like an act to restore this book to what it should have been. With the same kind of gritty tone that made Stormwatch STORMWATCH at Wildstorm.

While I agree I think this might be too much, it was much deserved. When people read Midnighter, he shouldn't look like a Batman with different morals. He should be a bad-ass. And he has yet to show that.

He should be doing stuff like this:

I know that is what they're doing for at least a few months because the covers and solicits are on DC's website. But I don't like any of the Wildstorm characters in New52.

What works or doesn't work in one situation doesn't always apply to another. ANYTHING competently told can work. And X-Men is different anyway, it's clear they're going to be going back to their own time at some point, otherwise there would be a massive paradox, and aside from Jean the future versions are all still alive... and I'm enjoying it.

But s far as Stormwatch goes, that's not actually what's happening according to Starlin himself. He gave a very lengthy interview at Newsarama, and was remarkably candid about what he's doing. I mean, it's sort of similar, but it's actually more like what Pandora did at the end of Flashpoint, where reality is rewritten and things in the world change, but this reality warp is localized and only affects Stormwatch. They may LOOK similar to how they looked in Wildstorm, but it's not actually them, their histories will still be grounded in the DCU. Yeah, it's kind of hand-wavey, but you know what? i don't care in this instance. As has been pointed out above, these characters were rebooted SO badly and so watered down, something incredibly drastic was needed to fix them. At least with this, It means it will be over with quickly (3 pages, according to Starlin) and then we can just get on with things. At this point I'd take one panel saying 'a wizard did it' if it meant I got the characters back to being awesome and I could actually enjoy reading stories with them again.

With Jim Starlin taking over, the new direction for Stormwatch seems to be fighting aliens and maybe Stormwatch should try killing all the aliens including Superman and Martian Manhunter.

@captain_oblivious: I think it's part of the reason they rebooted the universe, so they could pick and choose which bits of continuity to keep or throw away. That includes deaths, and frees up a whole lot of characters who had died to be used again. Until it's been confirmed on page in some way, any death that happened prior to Flashpoint may simply have never happened, and that character can be used again, though by necessity most if not all of their previous continuity may no longer apply. The Weird was just one of many characters who could be brought back this way and it doesn't require jumping through any convoluted hoops to explain their resurrection beyond Flashpoint itself. (although, to be fair, from what I understand The Weird has been back from the dead before, his powers allow for it. But clearly Starlin felt like starting fresh with him.) The Engineer... hard to say if the re-reboot was created as a means to bring her back, or if her being brought back was a side effect of how they chose to reboot it.... I kinda suspect the latter, otherwise they could have simply told Milligan to not kill her (or Jenny, but it's a different Jenny that's in Starlin's run...) because Starlin wanted to use her in his run. I'm sure her brianwashing could have been undone if Starlin wanted to use the continuity up until this point. Either way, as far as I can gather, none of the characters will remember any of the events from issues 1-18, those events simply never happened, or if they did happen, they happened somewhat differently (probably a lot differently considering the team has a different roster now). So she isn't being resurrected so much as being retconned into having never died. It may be splitting hairs, but...

Cornell's Stormwatch was one of my favourite books in the new 52, when he left thigs really went south quickly. I don't know what good this localized reboot might bring, i am not really familiar with the wildstorm version of stormwatch (except form what i read the team is not even stormwatch but the Authority) but i don't think they'll be going with a very edgy storytelling given Starlin's "classic" style (surprises would be welcome). I also really liked the idea of mixing old-school DC characters with Wildstorm and MM was a great choice. Bummer to see him leave.

The old logo is an eye-sore but i think it's just showing up for this specific cover.

I just hope they don't kill Zealot as i wish they'll bring the WildC.A.T.S. back. most of the characters are there already and some groundwork has been laid in Team7 which btw was a good example of integrating WS and DC and i'm sad they're axing that book as well.
