Examining the First Four Episodes of The CW's 'The Flash'

We've seen 4 episodes, so now it's time to weigh in on how the new comic book series is doing.

No Caption Provided

When the first images of Grant Gustin in the Flash's costume were released, some people thought it wasn't bright enough and were concerned the show would have a darker and more dramatic tone. Thankfully, that isn't the case -- not at all. Yes, there's obviously plenty of drama -- it's a mandatory element in most plots, people -- but, for the most part, The Flash has been uplifting and overwhelmingly fun. Sure, there's tragedy, death, and darkness spilling into Central City, but it isn't being handled in an overly dramatic way and it doesn't take away from the mostly optimistic atmosphere. Even when Barry Allen suffers defeat or fails to save someone, they still find a way to turn the story into a positive experience. He loves what he does and it doesn't feel like a burden. He's growing and leaning from his failures; they aren't ripping him apart on the inside and making him grim.

The emphasis on being inspiring is easily one of this show's strongest qualities. No matter how dire the situation may be, The Flash always finds room for levity and puts a more positive spin on many of the emotional developments. They won't throw comedy in at a completely inappropriate time, but they do put Grant Gustin's charming personality and likable characters like Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) to good use. For example, instead of having Barry mope and feel bleak about his situation with Iris West (Candice Patton), the writers use his powers or sprinkle easter eggs into the dialogue for more comedic beats.

The father-son dynamic in this show is doing a great job, too. Jesse L. Martin (Detective Joe West) has been giving a standout performance as a dad who simply wants to make sure his adopted son is safe. There's been so many times where the guy has held back tears it and just pulls every ounce of empathy from the viewer. It's powerful stuff. Barry's time with his actual father, Henry Allen (John Wesley Shipp) is equally moving. It seems like they find a way to have Barry visit his father in prison a lot, but considering everything that's going on, I'd say it makes sense. Barry's spent years trying to prove his father is innocent and now he finally thinks he has the means to do so. I'd say that warrants keeping him in the loop just a bit, don't you?

No Caption Provided

They've been doing a terrific job building interest in Harrison Wells' (Tom Cavanagh) story. They're giving us just enough foreshadowing to keep us invested in the arc and anxiously waiting to see what'll be revealed next. Cavanagh's performance is really selling just how two-faced and complex the character really is as well. For a little bit of time, it felt like there wasn't much depth with Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) and Cisco, but "Things You Can't Outrun" proved there's so much more story to tell with those two. They may not have a hidden agenda like Wells, but the emotional connection was finally established and there's so much potential with these two as the narrative races forward. It doesn't hurt that we're all waiting to see whether they'll develop powers, too.

In addition to being a hero and tying to prove his father's innocent, Barry's a dude who's in love with a girl who happens to already be in a relationship. This wouldn't be a CW show if the two simply got together and were happy with one another, would it? Having Barry deal with his feelings for Iris is amusing enough, but sometimes the focus on Iris' relationship with Eddie Thawn (Rick Cosnett) feels a little forced. It was toned down in the latest episode, but before that one, it felt like they had one too many scenes to sell the obvious point that it sucks to be Barry in this situation and all is well between Iris and Eddie. With so much going on in the city, this dynamic feels like the show's weakest point.

Having Barry operate out of S.T.A.R. Labs opens the door to so many surreal elements and the show is definitely taking advantage of that. After the first two episodes, many of us were wondering how they'd handle conclusions with the villains. You can't just keep finding ways to kill off villains, after all -- especially when the hero is blatantly against killing. Luckily for us, the show's putting the genius cast to work and they've created a high-tech prison to contain these powerful foes. There's still a few questions about this facility (what if the power goes out? Is it really okay to contain these people in such a small space for an unspecified amount of time? Will they try to remove their powers?), but this means they can finally break the formula and have Barry save the day without the villain ending up six feet under. Plus, they really decided to switch things up by having Barry's latest villain take the edge and walk away; it was a refreshing change of pace. As if that wasn't enough, there was some major service as the character did a bit of recruiting. Needless to say, it's exciting to see where they'll go with this.

No Caption Provided

The handling of powers comes as a double-edged sword. Watching Barry Allen zip through Central City is so much fun and they regularly have him use his super speed to create funny moments. The latest episode, "Going Rogue," did a brilliant job showing off his abilities. The opening sequence of Barry attempting to stop some robbers -- which happened to include Leonard Snart -- was a brief but beautifully shot sequence. And the final scene with the train? Totally thrilling and captivating. Watching the Scarlet Speedster rush around is a blast and the CGI with the villains' abilities has been great looking, but when the episodes frequently show us how impressive Barry's speed is, you can't help but feel like there's a lot of moments where he's getting downplayed. Right before Flash failed to stop all of the robbers, we had an entertaining scene showing just how effective he is at multitasking. Yet minutes later when he's fighting bad guys, he was unable to stop them from getting away on motorcycles and rush a man to a hospital. Yes, he's still new to this and they attempted to justify this by having Barry want to help the injured man, but if he can race around someone and deliver a monologue without them even noticing, it's very tough to believe he couldn't knock the goons down and return to the injured man in a matter of seconds, at most. Later in the episode, it was a bit confusing to see Barry stand around and talk with Captain Cold instead of disarming the dude when he's just a few feet away and has his weapon down. You'd think all of the trouble in the museum would have made Barry want to get that gun out of Cold's hands right away, right?

Before "Going Rogue," The Flash was following the villain-of-the-week formula. These are totally fine if done well, but the fiends lacked depth. Instead of feeling like compelling and interesting bad guys, they felt more like they were there just so we could see some really cool CGI-heavy battles. Thankfully, "Going Rogue" broke that formula and introduced the show's first legitimately interesting foe: Leonardo Snart, a.k.a. Captain Cold (played by Wentworth Miller). As said above, it's a little tough to swallow a guy with a gun -- even if it is an awesome gun -- giving Flash trouble, but at least they focused on morals and showed the character isn't one-dimensional. This is the first villain we want to see more of, so it's excellent to see they've made huge improvements to one of the show's weak points.

No Caption Provided

The Flash may be a little heavy-handed with its handling of romantic drama and there's noticeable inconsistencies with Barry Allen using his powers, but the show still has a ton of promise and it's a whole lot of fun. It's full of gripping emotion, a refreshing amount of happiness, and legitimately exciting action. They're finally heading in the right direction with the villains (slow-burn with Harrison Wells aside) and Central City continues to grow. The Flash is a really, really good time and has the potential to turn into something truly great.

The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW. How do you feel about the show so far?

I fully agree the 'one fiend a week' formula needed to be deviated from. I'm enjoying the show, and it complements Arrow's darker tone well. And ah of course the CW drama. I think Grant Gustin plays the role of Barry quite well for the show. He pulls off a nerdy guy with ease, and has great dialogue.

One particular moment stood out for me that made me cringe - it was when Captain Cold iced the road in front of the police car and made it skid. Really awkward CGI, but understandably, the show isn't on HBO's budget. I'm not gonna complain for some weekly meta DC entertainment that's executed with the best interests.

@abdullahzubair: I say the same thing, especially when a villain tries to monologue. But it wouldn't be a show without drama, especially a CW one ;)

The show is phenomenal so far, and I think the villain of the week thing will end once other plots come up. Almost all superhero shows have them at first.

This show has on thing in common with Constantine, they are both CONFIDENT in what thy are doing and who they are. Confidence is what truly matters in selling a tv show.

Am I the only one who likes the Eddie/Iris relationship? I thought Iris as a character was a bit dull in the pilot episode, but since then she's grown on me and Eddie's relationship with Joe always makes for some fun scenes, especially in this past episode.

No, I like it too. I just can't help but think iris was a _____tease to Barry in the pilot.

With the appearance of Amertek in the DCCU, maybe Steel will finally get his well deserved and long overdue on-screen do over (since they were his employer at the time of the "Death of Superman"-era)?

A man can dream anyway....

Yeah, she was very unlikeable in the pilot and I found myself wondering what Barry ever saw in her. But since then her character has been developed and I can kinda see why Barry likes her, but really would rather see her with someone else.

I really like Eddie though and his interactions with Joe make for some interesting moments.

We can always find fault with anything that is being offered, but honestly You really can't get much better then this for a weekly show about the Flash.

It's seems they are trying to stay as close to source material as possible but sprinkle in their own touches when they can.

I normally get involved with the SCIFI original shows, but as a Longtime Flash fan I am very pleased with what they have started so far.

There's no way to be 100% consistent with Flash's powers. It doesn't happen in comics, it can't in tv series.

If so, there would be no crime on DC Earth because Flash would have it all done every day in an hour. And that would be boring.

I am starting to wonder what kind of budget they have for each episode, it seems to me they are rushing and not developing characters good enough in this weird CW DC Universe. Also, why is Flash so damn slow in the show, is that another CW thing because they don't have a clue how fast he can run?

I'm not asking for 100% consistency -- that's impossible. But there are moments where it feels like Flash is being very downplayed to benefit the plot.

I don't deny that. I'm saying it happens in comics on a regular basis too. Its something you have to accept more or less with the character more so than most. (hence why battle forums get heated around him in discussion)

I think they don't want to OP Flash right off the bat like he works in the comics, they want to make him learn what he can do, have a moral code for himself and all that mumbo jumbo as a reason to justify "hey why doesn't he just eat lunch, save the guy, KO the thugs all in a minute"? While the character CAN he's clearly more invested in saving people at the moment first and foremost which I can get past.

It's not really a weak point imo, just them taking it slower. I'm sure by seasons end and few seasons down the line he'll be doing more ridiculous stuff, be patient.

I really like the show the only thing is Iris is currently a useless character and they her the "Streak Lives" thing just for the purpose of giving her something to do. I know this a staple for the genre but I hate the "the person investigate hero only to discover he is right beside them the entire time" cliche.

thats the problem with the flash, he can essentially solve all his problems and the jl's instantly (unless he's dealing with another speedster) because how powerful he is. his powers are pretty much endless

Maybe I wasn't clear enough in the article, but the point isn't "he's not doing enough cool stuff and isn't solving things too easily!" I want the writers to challenge him, but I don't want to see Barry struggle with multitasking a situation -- one which we know he's capable of handling -- immediately after dedicating an entire scene to showing just how much he accomplished in an astonishingly small amount of time. When you have him do something impressive and then have him struggle without strong enough reasons in the next scene, it feels inconsistent. It's not enough to really take away from the show, but it is a little distracting to me and many others.

Decided to watch arrow on Netflix, and have been watching it every week now. Absolutely love it. Started to watch the flash and I'm also getting into it, but I kind of like the darker tone in arrow. I'll continue watching the flash, I can only see it getting better from here.

I hear what you're saying dude, just saying since he's still learning what he can do he's also still developing as a character. Like your example, I agree he could have easily multi-task that scenario but clearly he was more concerned about the life of that guy as oppose to can I save the guy and get the bad guys? We all know he could, I just think they don't want to rush him doing things with ease. That and let's face it we'd have no plot if Barry just oneshotted the bad guys first few minutes(in this case Captain Cold) in the beginning. lol.

I think the main reason they did that was to not make him seem too O.P. and like I said that would defeat the purpose of the episode plot. Unless maybe Leonard went to jail and got bailed out some how...becomes Captain Cold and such.

But all that being said, I enjoy the show. It's a lot of fun and not many dull moments. As for the drama bit, I hardly even see any. I'm fine with it. Not your post per-se but it is the CW and even the comics have some drama but people have no issues with it on panel, in a show it's a big deal for some folks which I'll admit I still don't get personally that's just my opinion.

I want him to fight either reverse flash or the rogues and have to push his speed limit and tap into the speed force to everyone's surprise. Maybe he'd be seriously struggling to keep evading attacks and then once he gets speed force he just wrecks them.

I dont like it. Nor Constantine. But Flash.

The character is not my favorite. He can run fast. Big deal, to me, its the same when people bash Aquaman for "talking to fish." Also, I dont know why Barry Allen ever needed to exist as a different character than Jay, sure they are different, but their origins always looked similar to me. Plus, I wish he stayed dead, or came back using (Max)Mercury's blue/white costume instead of kicking Wally out of the books.

Arrow is awesome, & is pretty much done 100% perfect. Flash is just painful to watch. They pulled that BS Smallville did were all the powers came from one incident in their show. It was dumb saying kryponite gave peole powers, its dumb saying the explosion released every fictional DC element into the Earth.

Barry is an annoying wannabe Spiderman everyman "nerd" type, & the show just seems to rip-off Arrow's format of having the support team constantly helping him, & Cisco fails at providing the comedy that Felecity gives.

So fare I've loved almost every second of this show. In fact I'm even liking it more than Arrow at the moment. My only complaints are Iris - I find her to be very obnoxious. I'm also tired of this whole villain of the week thing.

I didn't particulary like the show...until episode 4.
"Going Rogue" was great. I really want to see the Rogues getting together. We have Cap.Cold, Weather Wizard and Heat Wave is coming. I am excited.

@cobramorph: You have your own opinion and I respect that. However, it is still a sh*tty one.

@mrgutts: Yeah, but in the Comics, Flash gets faster and hones his skills such as vibrating through walls over time. It is a learning process for Flash in the Comics as he pushes his limits. Another example is how he can anticipate and "scenario" out each outcome when in a situation in the Comics. I think his powers will increase as the show moves along and I think the the show has done a good job in letting the viewers see that as each episode he is on the treadmill and the the team is monitoring his abilities.
