Essential Comics for 7-13-16

These are the comics you're looking for.

Every Wednesday, hundreds of new comic books are released, and figuring out what books are worth reading can be a daunting task. Luckily, we're here to help you out with that. Here are ten upcoming issues, in no particular order, you should consider buying on Wednesday, July 13.

Conan The Slayer #1

No Caption Provided

  • Published by Dark Horse
  • Written by Cullen Bunn
  • Art by Sergio Davila

Conan is back at Dark Horse. This time, Cullen Bunn (Sinestro) is penning a new series, which features the iconic barbarian meeting up with some old friends and probably swinging a sword at his enemies. Dark Horse has a great record with this character, so this will be a book to check out.

Action Comics #959

No Caption Provided
  • Published by DC
  • Written by Dan Jurgens
  • Art by Tyler Kirkham

Since Action Comics went back to its original numbering, the series has been extremely intense. Doomsday is back, and Superman and Lex Luthor are trying to fight him off. On top of that, Clark Kent has been caught in the crossfire. How are Clark Kent and Superman in the same place at the same time? Hopefully, we'll find out more this week.

Detective Comics #936

No Caption Provided

  • Published by DC
  • Written by James Tynion IV
  • Art by Alvaro Martinez, Raul Fernandez

Detective Comics has turned into a really intriguing team book, pairing Batman up with Batwoman and a slew of young vigilantes from Gotham City. Batwoman has to take control of the team this week, as Batman is nowhere to be found. James Tynion has a cool story on his hands that's larger than just Batman.

Flash #2

No Caption Provided

  • Published by DC
  • Written by Joshua Williamson
  • Art by Carmine Di Giandomenico

The first issue of this new volume of The Flash opened up with a new speedster appearing in town. Who is this character, and will he be a friend or foe to Barry Allen? Writer Joshua Williamson delivers that story as well as having Allen struggle with work. Carmine Di Giandomenico brings his unique style of art to this book which gives the volume a distinctive feel.

New Super-Man #1

No Caption Provided

  • Published by DC
  • Written by Gene Luen Yang
  • Art by Viktor Bogdanovic

A new metahuman is coming to DC Comics. A young man in shanghai has become Superman. We're interested to see why and how this character came to be. Gene Luen Yang and Viktor Bogdanovic will be helming this new series, and while this book has "Superman" in the title, it's going to be quite different than what fans are used to.

Nightwing Rebirth #1

No Caption Provided

  • Published by DC
  • Written by Tim Seeley
  • Art by Yanick Paquette

Dick Grayson is no longer a super-spy. He's back to being Nightwing, but this time, he's working again in Gotham City. We got an early look at the issue, and fans of the character should be happy with this direction. Writer Tim Seeley explained in a recent interview that this is a conflicted character, and the series will have a lot of layers to it.

Millarworld Annual 2016 #1

No Caption Provided

  • Published by Image
  • Written by Abnett Mark & Various
  • Art by Pracheta Banerjee & Various

For years, writer Mark Millar has been building his own world with his individual titles. Now, the creator is reaching out to new writers and artists to take on some of his characters, which include Kick-Ass, Kingsman, and more. This is a really cool project and something that's never been done before with creator-owned properties.

Civil War II #3

No Caption Provided

  • Publisher: Marvel
  • Written by Brian Michael Bendis
  • Art by David Marquez

While Civil War II has been a bit of a rollercoaster, each issue has provided some huge, shocking moments that will affect the Marvel Universe for years to come. It looks like the Hulk is back and doing what he does best, which usually involves a bunch of smashing. David Marquez's art has really stood out in this series, and we can't wait to see how everything looks this month.

Vision #9

No Caption Provided

  • Published by Marvel
  • Written by Tom King
  • Art by Gabriel Hernandez Walta

Vision has been an intriguing and disturbing series. Vision and his clan are not a normal family. Aside from the fact they're not human, they have been involved in murder and betrayal. Tom King and Gabriel Walta have crafted an utterly brilliant series that is unlike anything else at the publisher.

Bloodshot Reborn #15

No Caption Provided

  • Published by Valiant
  • Written by Jeff Lemire
  • Art by Mico Suayan

Currently, Bloodshot Reborn is the best series that Valiant has to offer. Bloodshot has found himself a prisoner, and what's exciting about this current arc is that readers should be getting a lot more insight into his past and future. This is a great place for new readers to jump on as well.

Looking for more to read? Here are a few other recommendations.

  • Wonder Woman #2

Image

  • Birthright #17
  • Descender #13

Marvel

Rebirth is freakin killing it.

Its so hard fro me to decide which title I like more. Detective Comics is amazing. But no Superman is also fantastic. But Aquaman is so great too. Too much Awesomeness.

Action Comics #959

Detective Comics #936

Wonder Woman #3

Nightwing Rebirth #1

Hal Jordan and the GLC #1 - Hal is one of my favorite heroes ever but Venditi has been sucking it on his three years on the title so I'm gonna pick up the first few issues hoping this will be better.

New Superman #1 - This looks interesting. Always up for giving a new title a chance. Plus I really liked Yang's initial run on Superman.

Lmfao....damn DC. I mean they came with books AND covers.

While Marvel came with "Civil War II" THIS is what happens when you win to much. You get formulaic, boring and sloppy...

Conan came to Dark Horse at a pretty good time (just started the PS3 game yesterday). I could use something to go with the DC Renaissance going on.

Essentials: Action Comics, Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps Rebirth, Wonder Woman.

Honorable Mentions: Detective Comics, New Super-Man, Nightwing Rebirth, The Flash.

Others: -

Of course, the one, true, ultra, mega, super, hyper, ultimate, absolute essential is Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. Over the past week I re-read Robert Venditti's Green Lantern run. I can't wait for this book. Most anticipated Rebirth title easily. I can't believe it didn't even get a mention in the article.

It's not a must read. They just need to change the thread title to "Essentially stupid comics" because that sounds... God... Please help us. Marvel dun fudged up.

Thoughts on this week's titles.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps Rebirth. After re-reading the entire Green Lantern run from Robert Venditti over the past week I was ready for this (I would have read Geoff Johns' run too but I didn't have the time in only a week's time). The hype was real. Then the actual issue came and thank the Highfather it was even better than I imagined. Great bridge between the previous book and this one, sets up Hal's return to grandeur once more. The art was amazing. Ethan Van Sciver, one of the definitive Green Lantern artists at his best. The writing was so good. I literally got goosebumps of excitement several times throughout the issue. And when you think that nothing actually happened and it was only a set up issue... Tremendously excited! Pick of the week. Also, bring back the Blue Lanterns.

Action Comics. The books keeps going with the action packed storyline style. Great moments with Lois and Jon. The Kent mystery plot thickens. Tyler Kirkham taking over after Patrick Zircher was great. My only nitpick is that I'd prefer the same colorist as the two issues before in order to maintain a higher level of consistency on the title. Still amazing though. Highly recommended.

Wonder Woman. The start of the Year One story. Nice analogies between Diana's and Steve Trevor's origin stories. The writing was nice (though I still haven't read a moment that justifies this being the most anticipated Rebirth book ever since the WonderCon panel). The art was amazing. It's really sad that Nicola Scott will leave DC for Black Magick once WW Year One is done. Let's enjoy her art while we can. Highly recommended.

Detective Comics. The Colony story continues. The big bad is revealed and the reveal is nothing exceptional and it's definitely something people could see coming. The writing was still good though. At first I feared about the art because Eddy Barrows is amazing and not many people can stand alongside him, but Alvaro Martinez did a pretty good job here. Nice issue. Recommended.

New Super-Man. New series. Pretty awesome introduction to the major players. Well written story and great art (very Greg Capullo-ish which is good). Lighthearted tone and quite fun. Recommended.

Nightwing Rebirth. The bridge between Richard's spy book and his return to the Nightwing persona. The writing was great and Tim Seeley is a really good writer. I'm not the greatest fan of Yanick Paquette's art. The first reason is that it seriously lacks the feeling of momentum (in the first page we have Richard spreading his legs where he should be kicking his enemies) and the second is that some faces look weird. I could definitely live with that though. The problem is that the main artist's preview pages don't look any better, quite the opposite in fact. I'm gonna stick with it at least until we get to Marcus To's chapter's (I think he starts with issue 9), but this is a weak link so far and the prime candidate in case I have to drop something. It''s a shame how the art can drag down a well written title (or elevate it in other cases) and vice versa. Recommended mostly for Nightwing fans.

The Flash. The story continues and the writing is fine. The art is a huge miss for me. It's so detailed (which is awesome) that it's really a shame that the artist uses such thick lines. That makes the final product so messy and muddy that it really makes me wish we had a different art team on the book. Also, for the sake of Highfather stop mentioning S.T.A.R. labs all the time in an effort to mirror the TV show! Just for one issue! Not only did it happen three issues in a row, we actually had a panel here where S.T.A.R. was mentioned three times (maybe four?). If this wasn't a Flash/Barry book or so important to the overall Rebirth storyline and was a creator owned or a B-C lister DC book I would have probably dropped it already. Recommended mostly for Flash fans.
