Diamond Announces Top Comics of 2014

Diamond releases the numbers for which books and companies did the best in 2014.

No Caption Provided

Diamond Comic Distributors released its information for the top books of 2014 today. It was a big year for comics with the start of a lot of new series and major events and story lines taking place. Let's get right down to business and check out who is on top.

For 2014, taking both the top dollar and unit share is Marvel by a pretty decent margin, followed by DC Comics, then Image.

For those of you who like your data in pie chart form, we have you covered as well.

As far as top books go, Marvel dominated this section getting nine out of ten of the spot, with AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1 taking the number one position, followed by Image Comic's THE WALKING DEAD #132. You'll also notice that DEATH OF WOLVERINE gets all four issues on this list as well.

As you may have guessed, when it comes to graphic novels and trade paperbacks, Image leads the way. Volume three of SAGA was the top selling trade of the year. In fact, eight of the ten top trades were either SAGA or WALKING DEAD, proving once again that some folks just love trade waiting on those series. The other two trades featured on this list were the first volume of SEX CRIMINALS and the first volume of BATMAN.

Finally, here's how many titles each company shipped out the past year. DC, in total, shipped out 100 more readable products than Marvel in 2014.

How do they calculate this information? It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world. The account base includes brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, Internet merchants, and other specialty stores.

Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during January to December 2013, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.

There you have it! That's how 2014 wrapped up in the comic book industry! What are your thoughts on all these numbers?

Not a surprise. Marvel had two events, a lot of returns of various characters, the GoTG movie bolstered the titles, Wolverine's death, etc.

Marvel put out alot.

I'm not surprised, Marvel outsold DC pretty much every month except September.

Oh and here's the source if anyone wants to take a look on their site. Seems odd that it's not in the article itself considering everyone one of them uses so much info from them.

It was a press release directly to my email, not from their site.

Looks like Marvel's gimmick of making as many #1 issues as possible is better than DC's gimmick of having Batman everywhere. Not really a complaint against either company, those gimmicks work so to do them is simply good business.

Marvel did a lot of stuff in 2014. Not surprised they "won" last year.

DC did kinda of do a good job too as well as Image, though.

People keep complaining about Marvel's constant renumberings and events, but they sell like hotcakes, obviously they know what they're doing.

Im not surprised Marvel is the top seller but in the top 10 comics of 2014 how is there not at least 1 Batman or even DC title? Most of those Marvel titles are not even that good especially for some of those being $4.99-$5.99.

If Marvel is smart (And evidence seems to suggest they are) They should keep doing this until it no longer works (Hits the point of diminishing returns) It's like in football, if the opposing defense can't stop your running game..keep running until they prove they can.

Well in the end it comes down to what you value more, selling comics or creative story telling.

@inferiorego: Isn't in the same info though? I dunno just seems odd not to have a link directly to the site that is delivering this info. Either way thanks for sharing, it's the comic vine articles that actually alert me that these are out.

Marvel dominating the annual top 10 is not news. In 2013, DC only had 2 titles in the annual top 10, both of which were Superman Unchained (the best selling writer and a super star artist working together is going to be big) and in 2012, DC had zero titles in the annual top 10. Outside of Blackest Night/Brightest Day and the launch of the New 52, DC has not really had any comics in the annual top 10.

However, DC is very good at winning the top spot month to month and putting on-going titles in to the monthly top 10 (most of Marvel's top 10 placements are new #1's and events).

@nickthedevil: DC actually put out more.

Sheer number of comics? Yes.

Number of note-worthy things/events? Not even.

@jonny_anonymous: Except Marvel was generally reviewed as good as or better then DC. Over on CBR Marvel has ten mire titles then DC in the Top 100 Comics of the year, so plenty of people enjoying Marvel story telling.

@batmite1995: Marvel has been beating them on a fairly regular basis for the last 30 years, so I wouldn't bet on DC catching up next year unless the reboot again. Maybe 2016 when Supes vs Bats comes out I can see a surge in overall popularity for DC.

@albusan: that's because Marvel's #1's they released attract new readers and old alike. With Godhead, mostly continuous readers of GL stuff are going to buy it.

Marvel is like Puff Daddy in the mid-90s! I can dig some of it but they're really not doing anything special or innovative story-wise and they are doing anything under the sun to get more of your money!
