DC's Superman Comic Gets A #1 Relaunch With Brian Bendis Writing

The former Marvel writer will be working on a mini-series, which leads into the new comic Superman.

Last November, longtime Marvel Comics writer Brian Michael Bendis shocked comic book fandom by leaving the company to write for DC. Months later, his role at the new company has been revealed: he'll be leading the way on a weekly miniseries, which is a lead-in to a brand new Superman book.

Bendis makes his debut in April with Jim Lee in Action Comics #1000, but in the following month, he will be helming Man of Steel, a six-issue weekly miniseries. The comic, which features six interconnected covers by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado--seen below--is a retelling of Krypton's final days as well as Kal-El's journey to becoming Superman. In addition, a new villain will be introduced to the DCU and a secret about Krypton's destruction will be revealed. Joining Bendis for this miniseries are artists Ivan Reis, Evan "Doc" Shaner, Ryan Sook, Kevin Maguire, Adam Hughes, and Jason Fabok.

Following Man of Steel, Bendis will be writing Superman #1, which debuts on July 11. Ivan Reis will be supplying the art for the book. In addition, Bendis will join artist Patrick Gleason when he takes over for Action Comics, starting with issue #1001 on July 25.

In addition to Superman, Bendis' noir crime titles, including Jinx, Powers, Scarlet, and more will find a new home at DC. Some of his Jinxworld series like Brilliant, Total Sellout, and Fire, Fortune, & Glory will be available in the digital format this spring. DC revealed that there will be new stories from the Powers, Scarlet, and The United States of Murder INC series throughout 2018.

Brian Michael Bendis is best known for his long comic runs at Marvel, which primarily includes Ultimate Spider-Man, which kickstarted the Ultimate Comics line at the publisher. He and artist Sara Pichelli are credited for the creation of the second Ultimate Spider-Man, Miles Morales. Bendis' work has also made it to the small screen, with Powers, a show about a former superhero turned police officer that ran for two seasons on the PlayStation Network.

Really disappointed DC have chosen Bendis to take over both Superman titles. I was enjoying Tomasi and Jurgens' writing greatly, but there are many other writers who would be better suited to write Superman. Tom Taylor, Steve Orlando, Jeff Lemire, Rob Williams, these guys would be great replacements on Superman. Instead, they go with a big name Marvel writer they brought over just like with Bryne to revamp the character. I can't stand Bendis' writing either so I'm done with both Superman ongoings.

Also Matt your article states Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason will move over to Action Comics but it's been confirmed Bendis will be writing both Superman & Action Comics. Just letting you know so you can make the change.

They're letting Bendis kill Superman? I thought the people in charge of D.C. got smarter over the last year and a half, but I guess it was temporary.

Of course Bendis writes a series where a plot twist regarding an iconic character and their history is one of the main headlines.

Bendis writing both comics?! Huge risk and another slap in the face for loyal Superman fans. Why is it that Superman's big anniversaries aren't treated with the same respect as Batman's? Will Bendis be on Batman next year?

I'll give it a look, but replacing two popular Superman writers with the new big signing from Marvel, is just political one upmanship and a silly move quite frankly.

Getting someone like Mark Waid or Grant Morrison to write Superman's 1001st issues onwards might have been more sensible! Flippin heck, even Jeph Loeb would be better, he wrote some good Superman stuff in the naughties.... Shame Jurgens is off. He's a pretty iconic Superman writer.

I'm not going to criticize Bendis' Superman until I read his first issue, but this already sounds like a bad idea. Giving one infamous writer the keys to the entire Superman franchise and making another gimmicky #1 issue... These all seem like bad decisions

Now Superman fans will feel endless sorrow as Bendis sh!ts all over their favorite character and his supporting cast. If you liked Johnathan Kent before you will most likely end up hating him in the not to distant future.

I`m indifferent to this news. I feel Bendis is being given too much too fast and restarting Superman at #1 is unnecessary.

I am surprised that the current writers on the current Superman books are leaving. I love both of their runs. I am curious what Bendis will do with the Superman titles. I love the character, he is honestly my favorite character of all time, I am curious what he will do. I also hope we get some big story with Zod later since the recent issues in Action Comics, and Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps kinda hinted at something big happening. I hope Dan Jurgens will be able to tell that story or I wonder if Bendis will do something with it.

I do enjoy Bendis' run on Spider-Man both Ultimate Spider-Man, Miles, Spider-Men, Defenders, Avengers, New Avengers, and Iron Man. Don't mess this up Bendis!

Side note Issue 1001 of Action Comics, holy cow surprised to see 1000 issues of Action Comics in my life time.

Wait, so Bendis will be writing both Superman titles ?? Damn.

Both Tomasi and Jurgens were doing a phenomenal job, no idea why they changed him, unless he wanted out.

Obviously, I'll wait until I read the first issue (or at least the previews) of the official runs before I make any big judgments. Given Superman is one of DC's biggest characters, I'm assuming they'll have Bendis paired with editors who will have him on some kind of a leash.

The only thing I really question is why put Bendis on both Superman and Action Comics? It just feels unnecessary and a bit redundant. I'm glad that from the sound of it both books will still be about different aspects of Superman's life, like they are now, but I feel like having the same author on both books will limit the perspective that can be given. I'm also hoping that people won't have to buy both comics regularly just to follow any storyline in one of them.

Bendis supposedly jumped ship to DC because he saw a superman exhibit as some library IIRC. Its still insane he would get both plus a mini series but I guess DC is confident in the publicity of Bendis jumping to DC. Obviously this is getting a lot of attention...

@lvenger: One thing he said that i've been waiting for a long time to hear is this.

"I have a lot of goals for Superman, one of which is to help turn Metropolis into something as provocative and unique as Gotham City is," Bendis explained. "I think everyone will agree Gotham is one of the most built and best places in all of fictional cities, and Metropolis should follow suit. So Action Comics and DC Nation will be the first hints at how we're going to be building up Metropolis. Both in people and in culture, it'll be more than just the place Superman lives. We'll be taking a good look at a lot of place we haven't looked at before."

heh Hearing those words finally spoken but it coming from Mr. Hit and Miss is.........

Let's just hope it's one of his hits.
