DC's New Nightwing Comic Explores A Powerless, Authoritarian Future

Nightwing: The New Order's writer Kyle Higgins discusses the upcoming DC comics mini-series, which leaves DC's characters powerless.

DC's upcoming miniseries Nightwing: The New Order completely changes the dynamic of the comic book universe. The majority of heroes and villains alike had their powers stripped from them, and the man leading the charge, while working with the government, to hunt down the remaining metahumans is Dick Grayson, also known as Nightwing.

Kyle Higgins, the writer of The New Order, first worked on the New 52's Nightwing series back in 2011, and his return to the character was exciting for him, to say the least, "It feels familiar but different," Higgins told GameSpot. "I can write him in my sleep though. He's my all-time favorite character. It's more exciting than anything. I've already written the series, and now that I'm done, it's a bit sad. Even though it was for a very specific story, he was my guy again."

The six-issue miniseries follows Dick Grayson in 2040. "Dick's like 45 years old and he has a 12-year-old son," explained Higgins. "We're living in a world where about 12 years earlier, Dick detonated a device that neutralized 90% of the world's superpowers. There had been a proliferation and spread of superpowers in the world. They were as easy to get as a loaf of bread at the supermarket. You could walk into a bodega and pick up telekinesis. In a lot of ways, it's an allegory for the gun issue in our country right now but through the lens of DC superheroes and superpowers. The spread and incidents that escalated in the world finally culminated with something that's like the Armageddon war of Metropolis."

No Caption Provided

The New Order miniseries--you can see a preview of the first issue above--is a very different tale for the character many people know as Batman's former sidekick, Robin. "This is a unique situation because it's my take on Nightwing out of continuity. It's like an Elseworlds, and it takes place far enough in the future that I'm defining the character. I'm not playing off of established continuity that's happening in the mainline right now or anything like that." Higgins and artist Trevor McCarthy have carte blanche with the character and the world he inhabits, leading to this unique take on characters losing their powers.

By neutralizing the world's metahumans, Nightwing's actions lead to an authoritarian state: "The world did get safer, but similar to what we see in our country, things went too far. Laws passed that made superpowers illegal, and if you were part of the 10% that had superpowers, you had to register, and go on inhibitor medication, and if the inhibitor medication didn't work, which was very, very rare, then you're put into stasis until the doctor can figure out a way to take them away."

The story of a superhero losing their powers has been done before but never on such a large scope as this. There are many changes to the world around characters people know and love and with that, come redesigns of characters. Higgins explained that McCarthy did many redesigns of popular characters, and McCarthy's take on Superman was the writer's favorite.

Higgins closed by discussing the relationship between Dick Grayson and his son, Jake, and the dynamic's affect on the story: "It's Jake [in the future] narrating the book, looking back asking the question that we as readers are asking, 'How does my dad, who a lot of people said was the heart and soul of the DC Universe come to believe that this was best for the world? Was the world really that bad that this was the only way for the world to move forward?'"

Higgins and McCarthy's Nightwing: The New Order comes to comic shops and digital formats on August 23.

Glad it's an elseworlds but oh god, this isn't going to be like JLA: Act of God is it? Where every hero who had powers became practically helpless without them and saw no reason to go on as the people they were until Batman/Bat-God showed them the way? The story where Superman became a depressed drunk and Wonder Woman, who has met the Greek Gods, contemplated suicide because the Christian god wasn't answering her prayers?

Okay... This doesn't look good. Everything about it screams "Secret Empire." Is it necessary to make Nightwing into a fascist?

At least DC made it an Elseworlds title instead of canonical...

12 year old son and he depowered everyone 12 years ago. I'm guessing the imputes for his actions was his wife (probably Babs) was killed in a meta related event.

Yeah the story doesn't seem like the most original thing in the world, but if done well, it could be really good. As well, there has never really been this kind of story with Dick Grayson; he's always pretty much been a 100% good guy with no moral questionability.

I remember liking Higgins' N52 Nightwing run (despite the story being jerked around by external stories) so, I'll definitely check this out. It's also just cool that DC is giving NW an Elsewords mini, not many characters get the kind of treatment (especially nowadays)

@jashro44: Not exactly, If I'm not wrong, the writer stated(can't remember where) that Dick still doesn't kill anybody.

That aside, I'm very excited about this, if it turns out bad, then it's a shame but at least it's not part of the main continuity, but if it's good then all the better because we get ourselves a great Nightwing story~ & judging by the cover for #2 of the series(which has a kid with starbolt like powers coming from his hands), I think his wife is Kori/Starfire

@jashro44: Punisher kills the marvel universe is a satire, this looks like it's playing it straight and actually trying to give us some real emotional stakes.

If they want to write something edgy and relevant to the times. Maybe they should write about a possible world where the "bad" SJW's, Feminists, etc, reign supreme and what that would look like for everybody.

Not like we haven't gotten idea's of what other sides are like if they were in charge. So why not?

An it'll make plenty of buzz among the net. That much is a given. ;)

Now that image of the League down and Superman with steel rods going through his legs but if its because of what Dick did I have only 3 comments (ahem):

Superman IS NOT A METAHUMAN!

Green Lantern IS NOT A METAHUMAN!

Wonder Woman IS NOT A METAHUMAN!

Seriously, why do so many writers develop Elseworld stories that take away the power of metahumans and yet somehow also strips aliens and magical beings of their abilities.....not to mention what should have no effect on a guy using a ring of highly advanced technology. Superman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Hawkman, Starfire, Hawkgirl, etc aren't metahumans. They're abilities are completely a part of their own species evolution yet time and time again DC writers lump them into the category of "metahuman" for the sake of story or broad categorizing. Its plain stupid and lazy writing and shows DC has an editing staff that doesn't have all its s@&$ in one sock.

Again, maybe the picture is showing the aftermath of the League getting its a$$ kicked by hundreds of factory made metahumans and because they were losing is why Dick took the action he did. But it just doesn't seem that way to me because than it would also mean Supes, WW, and GL just sit back afterwards and let Dick and the government manhunt to their hearts content. That doesn't seem likely.

Not looking to make buzz? Yet comics have a history of making stories and characters that play on trends/fads of the current times just to make some cash an news. Hell they're even doing it now in certain ways, what with the various social media craze, the selfie craze, etc.

The Amazon's aren't really the same as the groups I'm referring to. So no, not really.

Also chill out. Just a suggestion. No need to get all irate.

You know, I actually had that same idea for a Batman story, where Batman himself is in this sort of position, as an inverse of other heroes like Superman; it would make for an interesting survey of Batman's more paranoid, insecure, and self important persona that's actually been seen before... (particularly in Frank Miller's work unbeknownst to Miller himself of course) So WHY is Nightwing this pseudo-fascist dictator instead?!

Seriously DC, you want to see a powerless superhero, particularly a core member of The Bat-Family as this "Powerless Authoritarian Figure" in a possible future, but instead of Bruce Wayne himself you go with Dick Grayson?! Are you really that inept to keep Batman in the right you go with his life-long friend, ward, and former sidekick?! Come on DC this would have made for a great analysis of Batman's psychy as a character, to see how flawed he is and how he becomes his own enemy... but apparently you're just too hesitant to see Batman in the wrong for a change...

Granted this might not be exactly why they went with this creative decision, but still.

But if it's all the same, this could still make for a decent story none the less, I still think it would have been better with Batman in the position, if only to take the piss out of him and see how flawed he is as a human being, and an a subtle inverse of Superman's ploy in The Dark Knight, or Injustice, but it could still work just fine with Grayson, being practically closer to Bruce in terms of his own experience and trilemmas with crime.

sigh...this has been done so many times before, and they always pick the most unlikely person to turn dictator in these things. One time it was Shazam turning all rapey and murderous...why Nightwing? I don't see ANY plot device they could use to rob the powers of an alien, speedster, god, metahuman, tech powers, etc in one fell swoop and flesh it out. I've seen where groups did it, like a JSA storyline with the 4th Reich, but it's never explained. It literally takes "an act of god" like the literal Presence, to do something like that.

I don't know why Nightwing is the main focus. Of all the non-powered beings to achieve this, Nightwing would be the last person I would imagine doing it. Someone like Batman, or Prometheus, or Lex Luthor, but... Nightwing? He doesn't have the arsenal to do it...

I'm thinking it's going to be something of a timed strike with a bunch of things happening at different times... like if say Wings is working with Waller or something.

But I got the impression that there are a bunch of people they cant depower as such, but instead keep them comatose or simply locked up till they can find out a way to neutralize them. Like I imagine someone like Cyborg getting knocked out and wakes up in something far less advanced.

Regarding the complaint about it being Dick and the unlikelihood of him turning this way... I'd say thats kinda part of the appeal of something like this simply because it's unexpected. Also they might have been emboldened by the Injustice Superman. I wonder though if Dick will be having anyone on his side thats going along with him like Batman normally has?
