DC's New Digital Comics Strategy: Same-Day Releases, Print Copy Bundle

How you can now get both print and digital copies of comics without paying full price for both.

No Caption Provided
Earlier this week DC announced they would be renumbering and redesigning all of their major characters as well as releasing 52 new number one issues by this fall starting with an all new Justice League by creative team Geoff Johns and Jim Lee. In that same announcement came the reveal of the company's plans to make digital versions of their comic books available  for purchase on the same day of the books' release. Now, DC  has announced even more details about the same day releases of their digital comics. Up until now, if you wanted to read a digital comic and collect a physical copy, you would have to purchase the issue twice; once for your collection, and then a separate digital copy. Not only that, but the digital copy of the comic would often take weeks before it became available for online purchase. However, all that is about to change. Beginning with the first issue of Justice League due in stores this August, when readers purchase the physical issue, they will immediately have access to the digital copy of the comic for download on the same day.
 == TEASER ==

Those who want a physical copy of JUSTICE LEAGUE to read and collect, as well as the ability to download it onto their favorite device for easy transport, get ready. Each print edition of the comic book and an individual code for digital download will be wrapped in a poly bag and available for $4.99. Separately, the standard version will retail for $3.99 and the digital version will retail for $3.99.

For many readers, one of the biggest drawbacks of the digital comic book reading experience was having to purchase the same comic twice and in two different formats. Additionally, the digital version of a comic would often take several weeks before becoming available for download through the DC Comics digital app.

Both digital and print editions of DC’s comics will have parity pricing for the first four weeks of release; thereafter, the digital titles drop in price down to our standard 1.99 digital price point. Oversized issues, including JUSTICE LEAGUE #1, will start at $3.99 and drop to $2.99 after four weeks.

Now that digital versions will be available on the day of release and consumers will have the option of downloading the comic after purchasing the physical copy without having to spend more money, we may see a lot more people reading their comics digitally. Not only that, but digital versions of the comics will also be less expensive to purchase than physical comics by a whole dollar. Between the announcement that DC will be renumbering and redesigning their characters, and now making their comics available for purchase on the same day of release, it seems DC Comics is certainly taking a more progressive approach to the industry. The question still remains, how will this affect comic book retailers across the board? Are you happy about having a digital option on the day of release?

Ugh, do we really have to shell out another dollar for this?  Also what format are the digital issues going to be in?  I hope they have considered the iphone and android in the viewing application.

An ipad has become much more desirable to me.

Actually, it is. Oversized books (like the first issue of Justice League) were never part of the "drawing the line at 2.99" deal.

it is an extra dollar since it says 3.99 for the standard version/digital copy or 4.99 for the poly bagged version with both physical and digital copy together

I wonder if the dollar extra poly bag code thing will last for every issue or just the first issue. I've been waiting for the move to digital books, but I said I was going to wait until they had same day physical and digital. I didn't think it'd be so soon lol. Now Marvel needs to follow suit.

I don't like digital comics. I love being able to hold the paper in my hands. I don't like the feeling of swiping your finger over cold glass to read a comic.

I think this is a great idea, and will probably switch all my standard books to the ones bundled with the digital copies. I love my physical books, but it'd be cool to read one or two while I'm away from my stack.

@waruikumo: Actually DC does its digital sales currently through Comixology, and unless an announcement has been made saying thats changing its safe to assume these new digital copies will be through Comixology as well.  Comixology is accessible through your web-browser allowing you to read comics there, or through the Comixology app for iOS and Android.  There is also custom tailored version of Comixology for DC that just shows DC products (And Marvel, Dark Horse, Viz, I'm pretty sure Image and who knows how many others).  The custom tailored versions I know exist for iOS, Android I'm not 100% certain of but I would guess so.

According to the article, they will be the same price for four weeks, after which they become two dollars cheaper. Only oversized will be $1 cheaper.

This is about the best news to come from DC's new strategy.  I especially like that you can be the Comic and get the digital download with it.  To bad you have to pay more for the combo though.  i need to check out Comixology to see how I like the reading experience.

So I assume the key is "oversized issues" will be $3.99...so the line will still be drawn on regular sized issues (#2 and on) for $2.99?

Then don't buy digital comics its that simple. Just because you don't want it doesn't mean others don't. I don't want print comics to clutter up my house and my shelves so digital is a far more attractive avenue for me.

Hmm... seems ok.

No major insentive for me to go digital, but doesn't seem to be any major barriers. The drop after 4 weeks is nice.

Being able to shop at $2.99 without any additional mark up by the retailers here (UK) is a big plus to digital.

Just give me the paper copy for now, that's all I want. I'll worry about no more paper when DC decides to go all digital...unlikely.

I think this is a really good idea and comics are starting to take up quite a bit of storage space for me. I will do a bit of mix and match with this.

Although it sucks for comic retailers I really love the idea of having digital comics. I have what, 1000-2000 issues excluding TPB. It simply takes up needed space in my house.

Having the initial higher cost of digital download would hopefully help out local comic shops when die-hard fans can't wait for digital issues to decrease price

As an addition to printed comics it was about time to go digital all the way and maybe you get some real new readers through the lower price or the absent of storage problems(just maybe).
But I for one stick to the printed comics and as long as they print comics it is going to be really rare that I will buy a digital comic book.

This isn't going to work well, that means retailers are now going to have to order two separate versions of the same comics (before even dealing with variants) and since one costs more then the other for them as well as the consumer many retailers will opt out and just order the regular paper edition because they won't want to deal with the extra confusion it adds.

Those retailers that do order both will also have to go through the hassle of figuring out what percentage of each to buy and those kinds of calculations take months of purchase trend analysis before the numbers get tweaked to what is actually needed unless they tell their customers beforehand that if they want the paper+digital editions they have to pre-order them.

God think of all the theft too, douchebags that rip the polybag just to snatch the code out of the book and from the back issue stand point those polybags usually don't age well and make the comic inside all nasty when it gets old.

And it was mentioned in the article that consumers won't have to pay extra to get both editions but the article clearly shows that is incorrect since you have to pay an extra dollar to get the dual edition. Sure you don't have to pay as much as you would have if you bought them separately but you still have to pay that extra dollar and the digital only copies may be cheaper then the standalone paper copy but that is only after four weeks, until that grace period they are still the same cost. Might want to clean up that last paragraph of the article since it contradicts itself.
