DC Reveals New Banner, Dark Matter

Find out more about the series and what you can expect here.

DC Comics revealed six new titles at a press conference at C2E2 today. These titles will fall under the banner "Dark Matter" and will begin to debut this summer.

It kicks off with Dark Knights: Metal in August. Former Batman creative team Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo reunite for this book, which will set the tone and world for the other series. The new banner will focus on what the publisher called Masterclass artists working with newer writers. It will "bring the sense of craft into storytelling," explained DC co-publisher Jim Lee during a press conference on Thursday morning.

The publisher wants to expand its universe and reach a new audience. co-publisher of DC Dan Didio explained that "It's a starting point for characters. It's a starting point for stories. We gotta keep building. We gotta keep introducing people to the DCU." The Dark Matter banner will exist alongside the regular DC Universe, and the issues will cost $3. Variant covers for the books will not be released.

Below is the list of upcoming books under the Dark Matter label.

September:

  • Sideways by Dan DiDio, Justin Jordan, and Kenneth Rocafort. A teenager comes into contact with dark matter and gains the ability to teleport through the dark dimension.

October:

  • Immortal Men by James Tynion IV and Jim Lee. Five siblings who were born at the beginning of time recruit the elite to stop Armageddon. This will be a horror series.
  • Damage by Robert Venditti and Tony S. Daniel. Ethan Avery is cursed with the ability to unleash a monster for one hour at a time.

December:

  • The Silencer by Dan Abnett with art by John Romita Jr. This book follows an assassin who moves to the suburbs for a normal life. Romita Jr. described the book as John Wick without the tragedy.
  • New Challengers by Scott Snyder and Andy Kubert. An adventure book in the vein of the classic DC series Challengers of the Unknown.

Below, you'll find character designs for the upcoming books.

Didio claimed that the real winners for this new banner are the fans. They want to have that same burst of creative energy that the publisher had when Jack Kirby introduced elements like Fourth World and Kamandi to DC back in the early '70s. Romita Jr. said that they have to keep trying new ideas, explaining that they can't remain stagnant. There needs to be some fearlessness when creating new ideas.

I wonder if this is because the Young Animals line kind of didn't work out?

What are you talking about? Young Animal is still going and doing fine. Dark Matter and Young Animal have different aims.

I'm normally not interested in imprints that focus on stuff other than the main DC Universe (like recently with Young Animal or Hanna-Barbera) but this one has me really intrigued. DC has been going strong this past year.

Okay. It just seems to me, when looking at sales charts, YA is struggling, though I do admit, I don't know what the expectations were. The aims may be different, but I simply couldn't help but wonder if DC execs were like: "YA not doing so well, let's try another way to brand/imprint some of our comics." More a curiosity on my part, not saying I know for sure. (Hence the " I Wonder if...." line.)

Had to laugh @ the guy who thinks DC ripped off WOW when WOW has so many characters that are knockoffs of comic characters, not to mention LOTR.

This looks cool though.

@nwoslave: You are supposed to jump on board because huge creative teams who haven't worked together in the past are writing new stories with new characters.

DC have said they are doing a few of these pop-up imprints. There is Young Animal, Wildstorm, now this and eventually Milestone 2.0

May have been my problem, I dropped it after issue 2 or 3. Same way i dropped both Agents of Shield and legends of Tomorrow after a few episodes, both of which folks are now saying are good.

The fact that there will be no variant covers is a good sign. No gimmicky nonsense, means there has to be amazing art and solid storytelling in order to draw readers in to these new books. I can support that.

I keep reading that this is all Dan Didio's way of still having some kind of control bc he strongly dislikes the Rebirth of DC and seems jealous of Goeff Johns success. Likewise i heard Johns is saying very little about this new METAL event and doesnt really support it, feeling it is taking good talent away from the overall of Rebirth

Ok, this is the first thing on main site, so I got a question. Why nothing is happening on comicvine for so long? No news about tv, movies, new events in comics. I'm not even talking about reviews? What the hell guys??

@jeanvaljean11: There haven't really been any content on the site since the buyout from Gamespot. Most of the reviews for comics are on that site now and even the youtube channel has changed names and is mostly games, pop culture and other things. Kind of see this site going the way of TechTV did years ago when G4 bought it (becoming G4TechTV for a bit), and acted like they were going to be integrated, but slowly dropped the TechTV stuff and made it all G4.

See, I was a TechTV fan. I learned how to put together a PC from that channel and do so many things. G4 I was fine with, but would have preferred as it's own channel, but they just....gutted TTV and used them to increase their market share (which I fear is happening to this site).

I also doubt it's a coincidence that DC praises artists after Marvel essentially insults them.

They certainly put an emphasis.

But a line like this takes time to create and if you look at the talent, DC had already planned this as a artist centric line to begin with. The writing talent is nowhere near the artistic talent in the line ups.

Yeah, I agree with you there, it's just funny that Didio's statement seems to be the exact opposite of the controversial Alonso one.

"What excites me most is that this series of books takes full advantage of the talent and vision of the creative team,Comics are a visual medium and with these titles, the artists are working hand in hand with the writers in shaping the look and direction of their characters. In reaffirming the craft of making comics, we’ve brought together a master class of talent, led by Greg Capullo, Andy Kubert, Jim Lee and John Romita Jr., to help set the style, tone and visual direction for these books. With these four industry giants taking the lead, I feel we can bring the power and energy expected from superhero storytelling back to the page.”-Didio

"There are fewer artists that impact sales than there are writers, Alonso said, and they’re harder to promote. “It’s harder to pop artists these days,” he said. “There is no apparatus out there. There is no Wizard Magazine out there that told you who the hot top 10 were. We don’t have that anymore. We can hype our artists all we want, but I don’t know if we know how many artists, besides maybe McNiven and Coipel, absolutely move the needle on anything to be drawn."-Alonso

It seems like that statement really wanted to say, "no, artists ARE important!!"

I honestly don't see what's so controversial about Alonso's statement. It's probably much more closer ti being fact than fiction. I feel that artist are just as important as the writers. You usually need both aspects to be great for a book to really be seen as a classic. There are exceptions of course. Yet it does seem like artist don't get as much attention as they once did, say compared to their peak in the 90s. They kind of had a slight resurgence in the mid 2000s, but even that couldn't compare to the 90s. The reference to Wizard Magazine really was spot on. You would think that comic web portals like ComicVine would have filled that void by having yearly ranks, or even their own Comic Awards to instill excitement around deciding who the best of the best is every year, or even every quarter. Best writer, best penciler/inker duo, best letterer, best artist team run, best editor for bringing/keeping the talent together, etc. I think that would build much more excitement and awareness around the creators. The industry needs to find a way to better promote the talent pool as a whole (both the veteran stalwarts and the fresh mostly/completely unknown upstarts) to more appropriately market the comic/graphic novel medium as being as great as it truly is, especially now that popular culture has embraced it as a awesome source for new entertainment ideas.
