DC Reveals New Banner, Dark Matter

Find out more about the series and what you can expect here.

DC Comics revealed six new titles at a press conference at C2E2 today. These titles will fall under the banner "Dark Matter" and will begin to debut this summer.

No Caption Provided

It kicks off with Dark Knights: Metal in August. Former Batman creative team Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo reunite for this book, which will set the tone and world for the other series. The new banner will focus on what the publisher called Masterclass artists working with newer writers. It will "bring the sense of craft into storytelling," explained DC co-publisher Jim Lee during a press conference on Thursday morning.

The publisher wants to expand its universe and reach a new audience. co-publisher of DC Dan Didio explained that "It's a starting point for characters. It's a starting point for stories. We gotta keep building. We gotta keep introducing people to the DCU." The Dark Matter banner will exist alongside the regular DC Universe, and the issues will cost $3. Variant covers for the books will not be released.

Below is the list of upcoming books under the Dark Matter label.

September:

  • Sideways by Dan DiDio, Justin Jordan, and Kenneth Rocafort. A teenager comes into contact with dark matter and gains the ability to teleport through the dark dimension.

October:

  • Immortal Men by James Tynion IV and Jim Lee. Five siblings who were born at the beginning of time recruit the elite to stop Armageddon. This will be a horror series.
  • Damage by Robert Venditti and Tony S. Daniel. Ethan Avery is cursed with the ability to unleash a monster for one hour at a time.

December:

  • The Silencer by Dan Abnett with art by John Romita Jr. This book follows an assassin who moves to the suburbs for a normal life. Romita Jr. described the book as John Wick without the tragedy.
  • New Challengers by Scott Snyder and Andy Kubert. An adventure book in the vein of the classic DC series Challengers of the Unknown.

Below, you'll find character designs for the upcoming books.

No Caption Provided

Didio claimed that the real winners for this new banner are the fans. They want to have that same burst of creative energy that the publisher had when Jack Kirby introduced elements like Fourth World and Kamandi to DC back in the early '70s. Romita Jr. said that they have to keep trying new ideas, explaining that they can't remain stagnant. There needs to be some fearlessness when creating new ideas.

I like the fact they're trying to introduce new characters, may have to take a look at a couple of these. At least they're being smart with the $3 price point. I found it silly that Marvel tried to introduce Mosaic and priced the number 1 issue at $5 making it pretty much DOA when it first came out.

Hm. Kind of getting a 90s vibe from this. Still, it's good to see DC try something new that doesn't involve desecrating classic characters. There might be some good finds in this.

All these artists are pretty much 90s stock. So it explains the influence.

They certainly put an emphasis.

But a line like this takes time to create and if you look at the talent, DC had already planned this as a artist centric line to begin with. The writing talent is nowhere near the artistic talent in the line ups.

Yeah, I agree with you there, it's just funny that Didio's statement seems to be the exact opposite of the controversial Alonso one.

"What excites me most is that this series of books takes full advantage of the talent and vision of the creative team,Comics are a visual medium and with these titles, the artists are working hand in hand with the writers in shaping the look and direction of their characters. In reaffirming the craft of making comics, we’ve brought together a master class of talent, led by Greg Capullo, Andy Kubert, Jim Lee and John Romita Jr., to help set the style, tone and visual direction for these books. With these four industry giants taking the lead, I feel we can bring the power and energy expected from superhero storytelling back to the page.”-Didio

"There are fewer artists that impact sales than there are writers, Alonso said, and they’re harder to promote. “It’s harder to pop artists these days,” he said. “There is no apparatus out there. There is no Wizard Magazine out there that told you who the hot top 10 were. We don’t have that anymore. We can hype our artists all we want, but I don’t know if we know how many artists, besides maybe McNiven and Coipel, absolutely move the needle on anything to be drawn."-Alonso

It seems like that statement really wanted to say, "no, artists ARE important!!"

They more or less ripped off "Sha" from World of Warcraft.

For the DC Sha-like villain, it also says "Monster. Blob of Dark Matter."

In World of Warcraft the Sha are basically blobs of darkness and negative emotions.

Coincidence? I think not.

On one hand I'm glad Tynion and Snyder are writing non Batman stuff. Please let this be a sign of them being phased out of the Bat books.

On the other hand seems a bit of a waste no? lumping all these big creators with new properties doesn't make sense. All in all Metal just feels like a 90's event to me, specifically Bloodlines. In other words I fully expect these characters to get brutally dismembered when the new establishment comes in.

Still its possible that atleast one of these becomes a hit in the same manner Tommy Monahagan/Hitman was. I'll keep my eyes open for Challengers as long as Snyder doesn't force feed Duke over there. Saw somewhere that Talia al Ghul would be part of Silencer, then saw Abnett and Romita on that one, no thanks.

So it's a Batman book that leads into a whole new line? Interested. And all A-list artists although none that'll likely stay long. I may have missed are these minis or ongoing?

Its a DC event, Bleeding Cool just kept calling it Batman because of Snyder and Capullo involvement. Snyder himself said that the next cover/promo will be about Superman then Wonder Woman etc or sth like that.

Very cool. The one that most intrigues me is the Challengers series. Absolutely love Kubert's art and very interested to see what Snyder can do outside of the Bat-verse for DC.

I'm loving DC's attempt to diverse away from the standard superhero line with Hanna-Barbera, Young Animal, and Wild Storm. Now if we could just get more Earth One books like Francis Manapul's Aquaman (this is still happening right?) and more Johns/Frank Batman as well as Milestone 2.0

I applaud their effort but what about all the properties they've bought from other publishers they're still not using? Or the properties originally in their stable they're just not utilizing? How long will I have to wait for a decent series about the Question? Did Rebirth fix him? How about a decent take on the Outsiders? A Black Lightning book maybe since he just got a tv show? WTF happened the the Freedom Fighters push just before the New52?!? I mean, there's so much more they COULD be doing that they're not, and then we get THIS.

Sales on the Green Lantern related titles continues to drop and DC puts their top artists on this stuff instead of a 'core' DC title?!? Is everyone in the DC offices in Cali smoking weed to the point of retardation? HALF their decisions make no sense to me....

Of the books, Sideways is the only one that does anything for me and that's cause I'm one of those types who like's KR's art. New Challengers looks promising but I find it hard to care about something like that in the middle of a universe of superheroes. I've always heard them compared to the F4, but the F4 has always been 1000x more appealing than the Challengers.

This is not a novel idea, but I'm all for it. It's all about intentions and I'm glad to see DC accepting this challenge. They had the chance to watch Marvel's "attempts" at diversity blow up in their faces. I don't want the heroes I grew up with to be gender swapped or race swapped just for sake "diversity". Comic book publisher's should be striving to create the next Spiderman or Superman. Who is going to be the next iconic superhero that will stand the test of time like a Batman or a Captain America?

I believe Dark Matter is DC's attempt to answer that question and I will definitely be supporting this initiative. The talent they have amassed under this imprint is very impressive, too. Wishing them all the best! Go DC!

This looks like a Didio idea, I'm fairly positive this is Didio's thing where Rebirth was Johns' pet project. Didio gets his own wheelhouse where new edgy 90s characters can be tried and eventually cancelled whereas Rebirth keeps the rest of the DC Universe salvaged and intact from Didio's meddling.

For March, highest selling one was "Mother Panic" which came in 162nd place. I tried a few, Mother Panic and Cave Carson. IMHO, they just weren't very good. Newsflash: Saying cuss words does not = great story.

I'm also a little bit aggravated the one I really like the look of [thanks to KR's art] is the one written by Didio. Unless Geoff Johns has a co-writing credit, NOTHING Didio writes will ever be a top 25 comics of the month. He just needs to understand that being in charge doesn't mean you can sell as many comics as the next guy. Instead of fancying himself a writer and putting out stinkers like OMAC, Phantom Stranger, and ending titles like Outsiders cause he doesn't know how to make the concept more accessible in his writing.... he needs to let somebody else tell a story with characters we actually wanna see like the Question. The most popular of the three 'Trinity of Sin' characters, even with a crappy new backstory, and somehow he's the only one who didn't get a series. WTF Didio?!?And shame on you DC....

Unless we get a Rorschach series sometime soon that would've been too similar to a new Question series, I will forever be salty about his mistreatment. He was created by Steve Ditko for God's sake, that already puts him leagues above other characters. Same goes for Ted Kord and he's been reduced to background mentor status.
