Comic Vine Reviews Hellboy II - See this movie!

Here comes the Golden Army
Here comes the Golden Army
I will start this off by saying I loved this movie.  It was worth staying up to see the midnight showing.  Hellboy has been hiding under the shadows of the other summer movies.  It's stuck in between Hancock and The Dark Knight so some people may not be fully aware of what it has to offer.

To Hellboy's advantage, the makers aren't necessarily making this movie for the corporate people running the studios.  With the other summer blockbuster films and all the hype their marketing forces have unleashed, they're betting on those movies generating loads of cash.  And they will.  You do have to look at how much it cost to make these films and what it takes to be profitable.  Hancock's budget was $150 million.  Dark Knight's was $180 million.  What was Hellboy's?  $75 million.  Regardless of final box office receipts, Hellboy will visually kick both their asses.

Hellboy seems to be made more for the fans.  To its advantage, it doesn't have all the pressure of being the huge blockbuster of the summer.  You can tell that it was made out of the love for the characters.   Guillermo del Toro and (Hellboy creator) Mike Mignola do care about these characters.  They're not going to cut corners just for Hollywood.

Remeber Lil' Hellboy?
Remeber Lil' Hellboy?
Usually sequels aren't as good as the original films.  Hellboy II is so much better than the first (and I really liked it).  The reasons are simple.  It's not tied down with telling the origin of the characters and it has a slightly bigger budget.  If you haven't seen the first, this movie is easily accessible.  There is a very brief re-telling of his origin.  All one needs to know is he was summoned by Nazis and ended up being raised by the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD).   There is also a flashback to Hellboy's youth with his "father."

Hellboy II has something for everyone.  It has action, suspense, humor, love, thrills, sadness, and let's not forget action.   I would have to say seeing this movie for the visual and creature designs alone is worth the price of admission.  This is what I was getting at earlier.  There's no way other movies like Hancock or Dark Knight can compare to this.  Part of has to do with those films being more grounded in reality.  With Hellboy, the skies the limit.
Entering the Goblin Market
Entering the Goblin Market

I remember when I first saw the original Star Wars (Episode IV) as a child.  The cantina scene full of strange new creatures blew me away.  The movie is like that, times ten.   If you've seen del Toro's Pan’s Labyrinth you have an idea of what to expect.  I watched the movie in a digital theatre and was amazed and the look of each creature.  I kept trying to find a scene that looked too cheap of fake.  No rubber monsters here.  I think my favorite has to be the Angel of Death.  We also get to see Johann Kraus too.

She's got eyes for you...and you...and you

So with the spectacular visuals, you can imagine what the action scenes must look like.  There is also more than one fight scene.  At times I wasn't sure if it was more of an action movie or comedy.  I'm not one to spoil things but there's a scene between Hellboy and Abe that involves beer...priceless.

What about the story?  What exactly is this "Golden Army" all about?  It's all explained in a very cool way in the beginning.   It's amazing how much was packed into this movie.  It runs just over two hours.  There was a couple times you could feel the length of it but not in a bad way.  You want this movie to keep going.  At a point halfway, I started thinking how I don't want to have to wait so long for the next movie.  If only this could be a super expensive tv show.  The length of the movie works.  The story isn't rushed nor does it drag on.

What is there left to say?  Hellboy II The Golden Army is a great movie.  You owe it to yourself to see it.  As I said, even if you're unfamiliar with the characters, the visuals alone are worth seeing.  It is an enjoyable movie.  It does have something for everyone.  It may not be as big as the other summer movies but it has a good chance of being my favorite movie this year.  It feels like a bigger movie than even Iron Man in the sense that there are more characters, better visuals and more locations.

That being said, I'm giving it a five out of five.  I was blown away visually and was not disappointed.

It was pretty good, I really enjoyed it.  I loved the interaction between all of the characters.  There were a few dry moments but nothing to make you lose interest.  I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars.

I would have given it 6.5 out of 10. It was pretty good but there were too many convenient coincidences. Also Liz could have just destroyed the piece of the crown at the first of the movie. And Johan Kraus could have realistically beaten up the prince and solved the problem when they were in the bprd headquarters. Also the part where they were fighting the tooth faeries was poorly done. Maybe I'm just nit picking, but there were too many things that really bugged me. but the visuals were great.

I thought it was crazy. Besides the fact that Guillermo Del Toro is a genius. The pale man from Pan's Labyrinth should've made a cameo.

Was well fun! looks to me like they had a crazy budget for this one, and knew how to use it! the critters were as pan's labyrinth, only more effective! would have like more character development, but you can't win them all. liked that there was no real good vs evil, everything was just shades of grey. I'll definitely get the blue ray of this when its out, and i don't even on the first one...
