Comic Vine Redesign Coming Soon

We're working on the next version of Comic Vine. Here's what you need to know.

A peak at the new Comic Vine. Don't worry, we'll still support RPG colors. I'm working on that now!
A peak at the new Comic Vine. Don't worry, we'll still support RPG colors. I'm working on that now!

Hey all. Since the acquisition of the site by CBS nearly a year ago the engineering team here has been working on a redesign and rebuild of Comic Vine. Most of the changes we're making are cosmetic and this is definitely more of a refresh than a rethink of what makes Comic Vine great. If you've been following my updates over on our sister-site Giant Bomb you may have a good idea of what's coming. If not, feel free to jump over to the beta web site, which logged in users (assuming they'd signed up before Thanksgiving) should be able to access. That site will launch fully next week and assuming all goes well, Comic Vine will get its relaunch sometime in the next month.

Here is a brief list of some of the features coming with the redesign.

  • A new, responsive design where every page looks great on mobile or tablet devices.
  • The ability to filter comics by who was in them, who created them and when they were made. (example: Give me all issues with Hulk, The Avengers and Spider-Man made in the 1970s).
  • Full wiki histories and rollback.
  • Better search (no more hunting through pagination for a specific issue number).
  • Better moderation tools.
  • Better API filtering and sorts.
  • Better forum tracking with the ability for watched topics.
  • Redesigned profiles with better activity streams.
  • A completely redesigned way to handle image gallery management.
  • Better wiki tools that allow you to create new pages as you edit existing ones.

Although I know sometimes change is hard, the feedback we've gotten on the designs from the Giant Bomb community has been extremely positive, and although I know each site has different needs, I'm hopeful the community here will have fun with it once we start showing it off. Expect a dedicated Comic Vine beta very soon.

To make the relaunch as smooth as possible we will however have to turn off some features on the live version of Comic Vine (the one you're reading this on!) during the next month so that we can keep the two sister sites, and their linked subscription services active and in-step. On Sunday February 10th the following changes will temporarily be made to Comic Vine till the new site launches. Expect this period to last no longer than a couple weeks.

  1. New signups will not be allowed.
  2. New premium memberships will not be sold.
  3. You will not be able to change or reset your password.

If you wish to do any of the following (I'm talking to you RPGers) in the next month before the new site launches you'll need to do so in the next couple days. Existing premium memberships will continue to run as normal, with no feature loss during this period. I know some of this seems a little drastic, but it's a necessary step to get Comic Vine on its new platform and have the redesign go well. Essentially, we're trying to make sure you'll still be able to log into the new site without issue once we relaunch.

Comic Vine is in a great place and we recently became the largest Comic Book site in the world. We take our job of collecting and organizing the data around Comic Books very seriously. This will continue with the new design as we fix a lot of the problems we just couldn't wrap our heads around when Ethan, Tony and I launched the in 2006. We'll have more to show off soon. Thank you for your patience as we transition over.

I'm very pleased that the wiki history feature was added, that'll make the mod team's job easier for sure and mean users won't get upset about pages being blanked, because it'll now be easy to fix. And the new design looks good, albeit with a few minor teething problems.

Try getting to your untagged images 500-600 images deep, instead of going through pages like before, you have to reveal them in order so that all appear on the same page by the time you are done. And trying to tag images seems like it can only be done once at a time. So if you have 5 untagged images at the back, have fun, it seems to reset after each tag. Actually, you can click multiple images as you go and add multiple tags to the group (but they all get the same tags), so not as bad as I thought. Still the linear reveal sucks.

@drgnx: That's a lot of images. Have you thought of keeping them somewhere else or breaking them into smaller folders? :]

@the_lunact_and_manic: What can't you edit about your images? I was just curious if I could help. :]

@xanni15:

Well half those pictures are failed attempts at being Funny, witty, or artistic ;)

I don't think you can, I tagged most, so most are technically in separate folders (when using the tag filter) but the only way to get the untagged ones are to go through them one be one. They should have a filter for untagged pictures, that would make it easy to find them and help sort through them quickly. As long as everything is tagged though you should be fine (assuming you remember how you tagged a pic you're looking for)

@drgnx: I understand. Hopefully in the future they fix that. :]

I don't usually keep that many pictures in a folder, CV has never really been good about organization. I've found it easier to keep them on an external site up to this point, however photobucket seems to be transitioning to the same thing CV has done in regards to needing to load one big page instead of being able to switch. :\

@xanni15: Photo bucket is good too, used to have a subscription, I think I have a few avatars on there for old sites, but comicvine is free, granted all images I load here are only used here.

Is it just me, or are staff reviews gone completley from pages for single issues? Seems like a bit of a big oversight...

Go to the 'settings' tab on your profile for the bolded stuff.

Not sure if this is another oversight, like Staff reviews missing from individial issue pages, but there is no way to access the forums for individual volumes. Characters have the bar towards the top that have links to the forums, images, and other stuff. But the only way to access forums for individual series volumes is to check the forums boards box in the search options. Sure it isn't too big a deal, but it's just kind of something that should be right there to click rather than typing the volume name and clicking a secondary dropdown to find only the forums.

I know this has been asked before by others, but no one has answered regarding this item, so while I hope I'm not stepping on toes, I'd ask for myself:

My favorite feature (and an extremely useful one at that) of the previous incarnations of the site had the NEW COMICS listings complete with a list of creators and characters appearing within each issue.

Is that going to be re-added? Because now, the New Comics listings are a bit of a mess, with no info like that readily handy.

Thanks for your time.

I know it's not important but I feel like sharing. The mobile site is terrible. I mean before it just had a few kinks to work with like not being able to open multiple tabs, and sometimes not being able to post, but now I can't even scroll down. How am I suppose to enjoy the site if I can't scroll down.

I know it's not a big deal so no need to worry, but if I can't scroll down then there's really no point for me to visit the mobile site.

Thank you for your time

@yung_ancient_one: I was on the mobile site earlier today, and the main issue I had with it was the inability to reply to, quote, or call out another poster. Never had problems scrolling. I hope they can fix that issue for you. :]

Haven't really been on the site since it changed, finding it hard to navigate, but decided to give it a go today:

  • Can you only rate a comic by reviewing it now? I considered the old user ratings system as important as the staff rating (if not more) and as a Wednesday buyer it was a fast way to get an all round review, rather than trawling across different website reviews to get a good opinion.
  • Also on the user reviews front; how do I view user reviews now? The reviews page appears to be entirely staff reviews now.
  • How do I know when people I follow are online?

Sorry if this comes across as a moan, I want nothing but for the site to do well, but it feels like a lot has been omitted, and it takes away from the community feel of the site. From a business perspective, you're pushing me (and surely others) onto other sites in order to hear from users now.

The redesign is okay. Its not really great, but its not terrible either. There are a couple of major issues though.

The most important one is the inability to see who is online. Many of us use the site because we've developed friendships here, and the inability to see which of our friends are online makes the site feel empty all the time.

Secondly is the bugs. There seems to be a large number of bugs. Some of those bugs are major, such as the inability to see more than 16 of ones images when one wishes to post an image in the forum. Or the way threads will randomly stop bumping up, making it appear as if no one has posted for half an hour or more.

Good grief. Did ANYONE actually test this site on an iPad? This is infuriating. Buttons don't work. Sometimes text boxes don't even let you select them. No drop-down navigation works -- clicking anything in the menu makes it disappear and selects whatever link or ad was underneath it. I'd go on but the lack of iOS consideration has my keyboard actually covering the text box so I can't even see what I'm typing.
