Charles Soule Signs Exclusive With Marvel

Writer Charles Soule details on his blog why he's moving to Marvel exclusively

No Caption Provided

In a post on his blog, writer Charles Soule announced that he signed exclusively with Marvel. DEATH OF WOLVERINE #1 comes out on 9/3/14 and with that comes Soule's new decision. Many people may be worried about how this will affect his current work at DC Comics, where he is currently penning SWAMP THING (The FUTURES END issue comes out September 3rd), SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN, and RED LANTERNS. Luckily, Soule will have the chance to finish up his run.

This means that I won’t be writing for DC Comics for a while, which was not an easy decision to make. DC gave me my first shot at “Big 2” comics with Swamp Thing, and my profile took a massive leap forward when they trusted me to write Superman / Wonder Woman. Red Lanterns has been a blast as well, not to mention all the other side projects, one-offs I’ve been lucky enough to write – and of course the projects I haven’t written yet! So let me be clear – the decision to work with Marvel for a while isn’t any sort of denigration of DC. I had a fantastic time there, I was treated extremely well, I have strong positive feelings about all of my editors and the DC universe of characters, and I look forward to hopefully working with them at some point down the road. You’ll still see DC work coming out from me for a little while yet over the coming months, and both Marvel and DC were extremely gracious about working with me to make sure that I could complete my runs on DC titles the way I originally intended. So, you’ll see my work on Red Lanterns as part of the big Godhead event, you’ll see me ending my run onSuperman / Wonder Woman the way I wanted to, and Swamp Thing will continue under my pen for a little while as well

Soule will also continue to write LETTER 44, while signed exclusively with Marvel, so fans of that series have nothing to worry about. Soule went on to say that writing eight on-going books was a challenge requiring a lot of focus. He stated that he is ready for his next challenge.

It's clear Soule has a lot of love for the industry and his craft and there's no hard feelings leaving DC. He's just ready for the next step in his career. Good luck to Charles Soule and his newest book DEATH OF WOLVERINE #1 which hits comic shops on Wednesday, September 3rd. Check out our review here.

fuck idc tbh, his writing is fucking terrible

2 issues of him and the books already a massive improvement over Lobdell.

I think he's good on Swampy but even though I enjoyed SM/WW for what it was, the writing was nothing special at all, if not downright bad.

And I couldn't really care less about Red Lanterns.

So whatever. Best of luck

Exactly

To be honest, his writing has been pretty good, the problem is that Teen Titans is in physical therapy right now. Lobdell totally ruined that book, and Pfifer is the unfortunate guy who has to pick up the pieces and salvage what he can. So far he's been writing it in the best way possible, which I really appreciate, because most writers would throw in the towel with a book like this right from the start.

Bottom line, he's doing a good job, it's just that Titans still has to suck for a while, until it can be fixed.

This is a shame because I do feel that Soule's Marvel work isn't as good as his DC especially his Swamp Thing. However I'm sure he'll do some great work at Marvel and I can't wait to see who takes over Swamp Thinh as it's my favourite DC character and title.

I'm glad he's penning the Wolverine Death story. Perhaps he can be as influential as Bendis in the Marvel Universe. That would be fun to experience.

They better get someone good to write Superman/Wonder Woman because I've been loving Seoule's work on it thus far.

Can't say I'm sad at all about Soule leaving DC. I hated his Superman/Wonder Woman work, I hear his Swamp Thing takes all the supernatural out of the title and I'm not a big Red Lanterns fan so I won't be missing his DC writing at all. Maybe he can do better at Marvel with fewer titles under his belt.

That's what I was thinking. One of the whole reasons I loved Soule was that he was that guy who pleased both DC and Marvel fans to such a high degree. Wherever he went, fan joy was sure to follow. Plus nowadays it seems like we have too many exclusive writers.

Of course marvel would reward Charles "Yes Man" Soule for all his hard work doing the marketing teams dark biddings.
His work is so bland, he's well on his way to do another needless marvel event

Peter Tomasi is replacing Charles Soule on Superman/ Wonder Woman soon. I am saddened over Soule's departure from the title. He knocked it out of the park and hooked me into the stories when I thought the title would be stupid idea. NOW, I can enjoy what Soule does with Marvel characters and hopefully they let him do great things. To the future! Cheers!

So sad about this decision. I really enjoyed Soule's work over at DC and feel he could have made more of a difference there than he will at Marvel. I suppose only time will tell.

I'll not be picking up Death of Wolverine. Not because of this news but because I have no interest in the character.

What Marvel needs isnt good writers they have alot. What they need are good artists. Marvels art are on some Jack Kirby swag which aint cool. They should be ashamed of themselves. Its like wanting to use Playstaion one graphics on your PS4 games.

yeah i get thats its a tiny bit better. a 'tiny bit' if any at all. but tbh Pfifer aint that great of a writer, and im not saying by any means like I would be any better or anything but his comics get shittier it seems and gets terrible reviews week after week from sites as well.

if Teen Titans wants to garner the mass support it used to have, then DC needs to put an amazing writer on there, but they only have like three talented writers...

i actually kinda dig it. i mean theres only been two signings in the past year so i dont know how you guys could be sick of it

it helps writers focus more on one side of things. at least in this instance Soule is allowed to continue his Letter 44 series.

and Brubaker signing with image is seriously the best thing that could happened. i rather have him on creative owns than anything else

Hey, now that Soule is dropping his DC workload, he can just write every single Marvel book. Marvel doesn't need to worry about any other exclusive writer contracts for years and years. ;)

@jonny_anonymous: It allows more dedication from a writer to a single universe, making their writing more cohesive and connected. It also usually allows them to effect a universe more in the long term.

Can't really say much about Soule. I'm not a huge fan of Red Lanterns and Superman/Wonder Woman was average at best. Speaking of average, the same goes for Charles work at Marvel. I don't see how this even benefits Soule but whatever. Nothing was lost.

Actually I thought he would be bad, because he has written some bad stuff before, but he's still handling the book very well. Again, it's still bad because it's made up of the leftovers of Lobdell's run, but it's on the right track.

@j_hickmanisgod: Sorry but nope:

A lot of people were saying — I’ve gotten a few emails today — “Is this an exclusive?” But it’s not even necessarily that, it’s a publishing arrangement more than anything. It’s for the two of us, as a team and the way we talk about that, it’s like a “Marvel/DC War” kind of thing where they’re trying to get people tied down. We’re not tied down. The deal is a commitment from them to us, so that’s even better. We get to just be artists and be treated like artists and get to do our thing, our way. To me, that was just like, “Holy shit.” I know Fellini said, “Ultimate freedom is the death of an artist.” because you’ll never turn in anything, but luckily for me, Sean needs pages every three days. If I was drawing it myself, during the five-year deal, I’d probably end up turning in one comic because I’d never figure out what the hell to do, but thankfully Sean’s involved and he always wants to draw. The end result, I think, will be more comics from us than we’re currently doing and more — I think better — comics. So far, the next thing and the thing I’m starting to noodle on in my notebook to do after that are going to be two of the craziest, riskiest, but best things we’ve ever done.

okay...if Brubaker doesnt "see" it as an exclusive thats another thing. Image Comics had it on their website back in January as "exclusive" as well. he is an artist obviously he gonna spin it his way haha

anyways he'll be writing marvelous things for Image for five years and said he doesnt have anything planned for Marvel/Icon.

so yeah, you and i are interpreting it differently. not a big deal, Brubaker will have awesome comics for us and Soule will have awesome stories for us at Marvel.

im glad. helps the writer focus more, delve in deeper.

It's a shame that he will be leaving Swamp THing soon. His run on the character has been fantastic and I am looking forward who will be picking up writing duties.

Also his Red Lanterns run made the book readable and it's a shame he's leaving that as well.

Isn't he also a lawyer? I was starting to think there were actually two or three Charles Soules all working under one pseudonym.

Huh! I find it hard to believe I'm the only one who sorta figured on something like this after it was announced that Tomasi would take over Superman/ Wonder Woman. As for Red Lanterns and Swamp Thing, I'm guessing they may both be cancelled. Red Lanterns has had a pretty long run and now Sinestro has a series, so it would make sense to me for the Reds' series to end. And considering DC has all ready cancelled almost all the series in the New 52 line that sell less than Swamp Thing, it may be next on their chopping block. Look at what they've done to most of the other titles in their "The Dark" line. I am in no way saying that they should cancel that series (even though I've never read it) because it does add some much needed variety to the New 52 line. That is- unless they can't find a writer for it. Now Red Lanterns, I do read and enjoy, but that I would totally support the cancellation of after Soule leaves. Of course, if they find a writer who has great ideas for the series, by all means- continue. But I really don't see that series as being important. Of course out of all the series at DC that were written by Soule, the only one that we do know is being taken over by another writer is also considered by myself, as well as apparently many other users, to be one of the absolute worst ideas for a series ever. (Maybe I exaggerated a little.) My point is that it often seems to us that the publisher has no rhyme nor reason to what they cancel and what they don't, so my predictions may be the complete opposite of what will actually happen.
