Captain America: Civil War Teaser Trailer Break Down and Analysis

The Avengers are fighting each other. What's going on?

The tension between the Avengers has reached an all time high. We recently saw the conflict rising in Avengers: Age of Ultron but now the lines are being drawn in the sand. The official synopsis reveals some information.

Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

The trailer begins where Ant-Man left off. Sam Wilson has tracked down Bucky and brings in Cap.

No Caption Provided

Bucky's arm seems to be stuck. Somehow he appears to be clear of his brainwashing. Perhaps he's been on the run since Captain America: The Winter Soldier and hasn't had his mind wiped since. This has allowed him to get his bearings.

There's a bombing and it's possible the Winter Soldier is getting the blame. We see some soldiers who, based on the narration, appear to be looking for Bucky. Crossbones can be seen in the middle of the soldiers which could lead us to believe they're setting him up.

No Caption Provided

This leads to General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (looks like he got a promotion) giving Steve a lecture about how some see him as a vigilante.

No Caption Provided

We see mention of the Sokovia Accords. In the end scene from Ant-Man, Sam and Steve talk about getting help from Tony. Sam says, "Who knows if the Accords will let him help."

No Caption Provided

With what happened to Sokovia in Age of Ultron, the people and government will want more accountability from the Avengers. "You've operated with unlimited power and no supervision. That's something the world can no longer tolerate."

We see Black Widow getting the Accords and maybe she had to sign it (or is it Wanda?). In Winter Soldier, we know all her dark secrets became public knowledge and this may be a way for her to prevent being locked up for anything she may have done in the past. She tries talking to Steve about not getting involved with the hunt for Bucky. They want him to pay for what he did, again, possibly the explosion seen at the beginning.

No Caption Provided

Natasha asks Steve to stay out of it and he asks her if she'll arrest him. She doesn't seem too keen on her position but her hands are tied.

When we start seeing the consequences of Cap's involvement, Tony shows up with a black eye. It's likely that Steve may have given it to him before.

No Caption Provided

Steve and Sam appear to have turned themselves in. We see them in plain clothes and soldiers carrying away his shield and probably Sam's backpack. Looks like Sharon Carter is there in the background.

No Caption Provided

Tony comes in and starts talking down to Steve. He talks to him about having limitations otherwise they're just like the bad guys. He even says, "Sometimes I want to punch you in your perfect teeth."

No Caption Provided

That doesn't seem like the best way to handle the situation.

Natasha tries talking to Steve again right before the fight begins.

No Caption Provided

We then see him bust into the IFID building. It's not clear what this building is or who's being kept inside but we do see Africa on the emblem. The credits for the movie list several Nigerian roles ("Nigerian Peddler," "Nigerian Cafe Guest," "Nigerian Tourist," etc). This could lead up to Black Panther's coming in. Cap must have crossed a line in Wakanda in order for T'Challa to get involved.

At a German airport, we see the conflict between the Avengers about to begin.

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

Black Panther is here as well. He's on Tony's side and fights against Bucky.

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

What's interesting is we do see Natasha fighting in her civilian garb. This could be where the "Nigerian Peddler" or tourist comes in. Who is she fighting? We can't get a look at the guys' face but he's clearly armed. Is this someone fighting against them? Possibly it's one of Crossbones' men. Or could it be that she'll be switching sides during the movie?

No Caption Provided

There's a running chase scene. We see Cap running after Black Panther who might be headed towards Bucky.

No Caption Provided

Bucky gets some one on one time with Tony and appears to be tearing out his arc reactor.

No Caption Provided

Something happens to War Machine. We see Tony with him and not looking too happy.

No Caption Provided

This is probably after the fight at the airport. We'll assume Rhodey is still alive. He just had his suit wrecked and is unconscious. This starts to make it personal for Tony when he sees his best friend like this. Who struck the knockout blow? Was it Bucky? Another member of #TeamCap? Was it Cap himself? We do hear him apologizing to Tony. "Sorry Tony. You know I wouldn't do this if I had any other choice."

And it all ends with a two-on-one fight with Cap and Bucky against Tony.

No Caption Provided

Actually, let's relive that scene one more time.

No Caption Provided

If you're looking to see the trailer again, check it out HERE.

How do you think the conflict will go? Do you think Black Widow or any other characters will switch sides? What do you think happened to Rhodey? Let us know your thoughts below.

@mark_stephen: Oh, I agree, but where's the evidence? That claim won't be taken seriously in court without evidence. In any case, if Cap is the one who tells Iron Man it was Bucky, then yeah, he might convince him it was brainwashing, but if someone else tells him, that someone else might not even know.

@docholiday: Doesn't matter if Vision isn't in the trailer neither is Spider-Man but they are in the cast.

You complain about Thor not being there when you have been explained he is running a movie with Hulk at the same time civil war takes place. He's most likely dead too. Thor has no place in some American political domestic problem. Not even in the comics was he part of the civil war event.

Strange doesn't care about earthly political nonsense it's beneath him.

Cool story bro! Not having this discussion with you anymore.

Must...see...black...panther.

That guy was litteraly my favorite character ever. I don't know if it's just because I always liked the athletic "ninja" like ones or if it's because he's black, I know that sounds racist but they seem to make black guys amazing in so many shows (at least that I've seen)

Let me clarify my point. While I believe the drama with Bucky is enough to base a third Cap movie on, the whole avengers under govt control or whatever seems manufactured. Seems to me they've done all they can do to minimize destruction and save lives. Now they want to play up the violence and destruction to validate a civil war concept that seems to me a response to BVS. But that's just my opinion

@gotham331: I understand that view, and I certainly think it's a possibility that they did this in response to BvS. But saying there isn't enough motivation for the Sokovia Accords is simply not true.

Midtown New York was practically destroyed. An entire city was destroyed. It's gone. Yes the Avenger's saved peoples lives. The Accords aren't there to stop them from saving people (I'm assuming). They are there to keep them regulated so there is someone responsible. Someone to answer to.

Just like cops have specific laws protecting them because they're official government servants. If you make a citizens arrest, there are huge legal issues that have to be gone through because as a regular citizen, you are not afforded those protections.

So with the damage to New York. The damage to Washington D.C. The damage to London. The destruction of an ENTIRE city, the government needs to find a way to assure people that these vigilantes actually stand for something.

So I think there is more than enough material to make the accords work. Heck, I felt there was enough after the first Avengers movie. In fact, in the newsreels at the end of that movie, there is a reporter asking as much.

I think Vision will be a silent partner of Iron Mans, refusing to fight friends. However i think Tony will cross a line maybe make a deal with a bad guy and Vision will swap sides.

Well there was the file that Natasha gave Cap, and I'm sure any examination will reveal the fact that Bucky has not aged since ww2. There's evidence if they are willing to go that route, unless as in the comics they completely ignore the US Constitution and have the same pre-schooler understanding of the American legal system. If not this might be just another collection of meaningless superhero on superhero fight scenes.

Thing of it is what would Bucky's legal status be? Frozen for years, brainwashed repeatedly by the Soviet Union and/or HYDRA, I think he could make a pretty good case to get charges dismissed. He wasn't in his right mind, in fact his mental state was deliberately scrambled. Tony might or might not understand that, but at the very least Steve would and get him a good lawyer.

@lukehero: Bug staff said posts have been restored so this should be fine now. Agreed, it would be a much better use of Spider-Man in Civil War as a major turning force in the conflict. Not to mention it would serve as the biggest fanservice moment in comic book cinematic history.

@mark_stephen: Did that file have evidence of that? I don't remember enough about it. And evidence he didn't age is only evidence he didn't age, it says nothing about his allegiances. And about that Constitution thing, the Constitution has been ignored in real life before, I wouldn't find it farfetched that it happens for such an important issue just because it's a movie.

No Thor and No Vision, obviously because either of those two is way too powerful and would tip the scales of which ever side they're on. I like that because it's just like the original comic where Strange, Thor and basically anyone with real god like power stayed out of the fighting, mostly because they saw that it was beneath them and not worth it

Vision is in it. Paul Bettany hinted that he may switch sides in this movie. Ant-Man is also in this movie and he was absent from the trailer. Rumor is he becomes Giant-Man in this.

@gotham331: Tony Stark created Ultron, who almost destroyed the world. I think that's more than enough to make the government want to control them, and it would be completely farfetched to me if this didn't happen.

Ignored by SHIELD types and others yes, but all Steve has to do is call a press conference as Cap and the heat would be too high to avoid giving Buck due process.

Everyone is entitled to one and everyone is entitled to due process. That the marvel writers in the comics are ignorant of this doesn't mean the people writing the movie will be.

Wanda takes down Rhodey. You see her start to fly when everyone is running. She hasn't been with the team long so she won't think twice about taking him down and she has the power to do it.

@mark_stephen: Cap would almost certainly try to avoid due process in this case, because Bucky would more than likely legally receive capital punishment. Plus, if these people want him dead, he'd probably "accidentally" die before he gets to trial. It's not like Cap is gonna be allowed on his protection detail during and before his trial. Also, I just thought of this, a SHIELD file won't be considered in court because SHIELD is seen as corrupt by the U.S. and their intel has been deceptive before, so it doesn't matter what's in that file, the U.S. won't view it as legitimate evidence.

Maybe, but any doctor looking at him will be able to tell. There's a whole host of things that would prevent Buck from getting the death penalty, not the least of which is his mental state at the time of the killings. They'll be evidence, HYDRA wasn't around afterwards to clean up and you can't keep a man on ice for that long, tamper with his mind and body that much without leaving some clues and witnesses behind.

It all depends on how cynical the movie makers are going with this. In the comics the cynicism reached a level that would have been at home in Menzoberazon or the height of the Borgia's rule of the church. The heroes led by Tony were thoroughly brutal, ruthless and corrupt while Cap's side got all the idiots. But that was the comics, I'm not sure they'll be as cynical with the movie. If they will I'm sure as heck not going to watch it.

@mark_stephen: either way, it's taking a chance, and I don't think Cap is taking chances with Bucky's life. (I personally think they could certainly manipulate the court). I hope it's not one-sided here, I mean, just because it's a Captain America movie shouldn't mean I absolutely have to agree with Cap. I'd be extremely disappointed with this movie if Iron Man is basically just evil.

The conflict between them is going to be the movie, I'm sure of that. But I can't see Downey agreeing to take Tony as far into the evil side as they took the comic book. In the cw storyline Iron Man was basically Dr. Doom with a better paint job and less style.

@thedailybagel: Really hope im wrong but I have a bad feeling this movie is going to be weakly plotted (in a similar fashion as Iron Man 3 & Avengers 2 were). The story arc itself is one of my favorites but I think the movie adaption will come off feeling a bit forced. Will they have us believing these super heroes are fighting eachother for good reason? Because thats something i take seriously. My favorite Marvel movies of all time were Winter Soldier and Avengers 1. And in both instances, there was the feeling of purpose. They were actually about something. I dont know but nontheless, I cant wait to watch it, and Deadpool as well.
