Captain America: Civil War Teaser Trailer Break Down and Analysis

The Avengers are fighting each other. What's going on?

The tension between the Avengers has reached an all time high. We recently saw the conflict rising in Avengers: Age of Ultron but now the lines are being drawn in the sand. The official synopsis reveals some information.

Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

The trailer begins where Ant-Man left off. Sam Wilson has tracked down Bucky and brings in Cap.

No Caption Provided

Bucky's arm seems to be stuck. Somehow he appears to be clear of his brainwashing. Perhaps he's been on the run since Captain America: The Winter Soldier and hasn't had his mind wiped since. This has allowed him to get his bearings.

There's a bombing and it's possible the Winter Soldier is getting the blame. We see some soldiers who, based on the narration, appear to be looking for Bucky. Crossbones can be seen in the middle of the soldiers which could lead us to believe they're setting him up.

No Caption Provided

This leads to General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (looks like he got a promotion) giving Steve a lecture about how some see him as a vigilante.

No Caption Provided

We see mention of the Sokovia Accords. In the end scene from Ant-Man, Sam and Steve talk about getting help from Tony. Sam says, "Who knows if the Accords will let him help."

No Caption Provided

With what happened to Sokovia in Age of Ultron, the people and government will want more accountability from the Avengers. "You've operated with unlimited power and no supervision. That's something the world can no longer tolerate."

We see Black Widow getting the Accords and maybe she had to sign it (or is it Wanda?). In Winter Soldier, we know all her dark secrets became public knowledge and this may be a way for her to prevent being locked up for anything she may have done in the past. She tries talking to Steve about not getting involved with the hunt for Bucky. They want him to pay for what he did, again, possibly the explosion seen at the beginning.

No Caption Provided

Natasha asks Steve to stay out of it and he asks her if she'll arrest him. She doesn't seem too keen on her position but her hands are tied.

When we start seeing the consequences of Cap's involvement, Tony shows up with a black eye. It's likely that Steve may have given it to him before.

No Caption Provided

Steve and Sam appear to have turned themselves in. We see them in plain clothes and soldiers carrying away his shield and probably Sam's backpack. Looks like Sharon Carter is there in the background.

No Caption Provided

Tony comes in and starts talking down to Steve. He talks to him about having limitations otherwise they're just like the bad guys. He even says, "Sometimes I want to punch you in your perfect teeth."

No Caption Provided

That doesn't seem like the best way to handle the situation.

Natasha tries talking to Steve again right before the fight begins.

No Caption Provided

We then see him bust into the IFID building. It's not clear what this building is or who's being kept inside but we do see Africa on the emblem. The credits for the movie list several Nigerian roles ("Nigerian Peddler," "Nigerian Cafe Guest," "Nigerian Tourist," etc). This could lead up to Black Panther's coming in. Cap must have crossed a line in Wakanda in order for T'Challa to get involved.

At a German airport, we see the conflict between the Avengers about to begin.

Black Panther is here as well. He's on Tony's side and fights against Bucky.

What's interesting is we do see Natasha fighting in her civilian garb. This could be where the "Nigerian Peddler" or tourist comes in. Who is she fighting? We can't get a look at the guys' face but he's clearly armed. Is this someone fighting against them? Possibly it's one of Crossbones' men. Or could it be that she'll be switching sides during the movie?

No Caption Provided

There's a running chase scene. We see Cap running after Black Panther who might be headed towards Bucky.

No Caption Provided

Bucky gets some one on one time with Tony and appears to be tearing out his arc reactor.

No Caption Provided

Something happens to War Machine. We see Tony with him and not looking too happy.

No Caption Provided

This is probably after the fight at the airport. We'll assume Rhodey is still alive. He just had his suit wrecked and is unconscious. This starts to make it personal for Tony when he sees his best friend like this. Who struck the knockout blow? Was it Bucky? Another member of #TeamCap? Was it Cap himself? We do hear him apologizing to Tony. "Sorry Tony. You know I wouldn't do this if I had any other choice."

And it all ends with a two-on-one fight with Cap and Bucky against Tony.

No Caption Provided

Actually, let's relive that scene one more time.

How do you think the conflict will go? Do you think Black Widow or any other characters will switch sides? What do you think happened to Rhodey? Let us know your thoughts below.

Glad to see the return of TWS's aesthetic. More grounded and in your face, less fantastical.

Really enjoyed the trailer. Cool to see Wanda start to fly. I hope they continue to leave out Zemo from the trailers and have his role and interaction be a surprise.

Martin Freeman and Agent 13 to the right. (In the trailer 1:21-22)

The soldiers coming for Bucky seem to actually be german police judging by the 'Polizei' written on their vests, they don't seem to be the same guys from the Crossbones picture, though.

I feel like this movie could set up a secret avengers movie. Tony would lead the "official" avengers working with the government. but then cap would be leading a black ops team on missions the government doesn't want to be involved in.

How is Spider-Man going to fit in this? Maybe it's just a cameo, but I was hoping for him to be in the actual big battles

I won't lie- despite my reservations about this movie, the trailer got me super hyped.

Based on this trailer the 'civil war' doesn't seem big in scope. I wonder if the overarching plot will still include the hero registration act or if that has been completely skipped in the Marvel Cinematic universe.

Don't expect anything on the scope of the Civil war comic , you going to be sorely disappointed.

Very hyped for this movie! The Russo brothers look like they are going to deliver again (The winter soldier is my favorite of any marvel production so far) also looking forward to see what they do with Avengers infinity war parts 1 and 2

At this point I'm sure his role will be minor, if not the post-credits scene. I can't imagine all this tension building up between Stark and Rogers get intercepted just so Marvel can say "Oh, and here's Spidey". But then again this is only the first trailer, there is still a lot more to show I suppose, so who knows.

No Thor and No Vision, obviously because either of those two is way too powerful and would tip the scales of which ever side they're on. I like that because it's just like the original comic where Strange, Thor and basically anyone with real god like power stayed out of the fighting, mostly because they saw that it was beneath them and not worth it

He is no where in the trailer. That is what I am basing it off of. You have shown a drawing of what the group is expected to be. They showed Vision basically being on the level of Thor in the 2nd Avengers film (although that movie couldn't decide who was stronger than who) so having Iron Man, War Machine (both who can lift way more than Cap and fly and are bulletproof) are already a stacked advantage against Cap and Bucky. If Vision is in it, cool but I doubt he'll fight. If he did, they would show at least a glimpse of it in the trailer.

@docholiday: Vision is on Iron Man's side which does make Team Iron Man even more OP than it already is.

I have a feeling that a fan made rumour where Spider-Man is saving citizens in the middle of a battle between Team Cap and Team Iron Man will be his major role in this film. There's already a lot going on with characters and plot points aplenty so Spider-Man might just be fan service.

And welcome back by the way Luke, I feel bad you were one of the victims of CV's banning bug. Did you lose your posts too?

Again, I said he isn't anywhere in the trailer. Here, let me go like HE ISN'T IN THE TRAILER. If he is in the movie, great, but they don't show him in any of these awesome fight scenes.

As for how it relates to the comic, I was just saying that Thor isn't a part of it because those with god like power would really tip the scales in a fight between a guy in a super suit and a guy with a shield.

@docholiday: Thor and Hulk are doing their movie mashup that probably takes place at the same timeline in marvel movie universe as civil war plays out. Besides Thor is only used for when Midgard earth is under invasion by aliens and evil robots. Not some domestic american political problems. He wouldn't care.

I never even mentioned the Hulk. I started with saying Thor and Vision aren't in the trailer. I am not sure where you get these extra parts. Ok.

Watch the trailer, frame by frame; Thor and Vision aren't in it and by IT I mean the TRAILER

Now, compared to the comic, Vision, Thor, Strange and others with god like super powers stayed out of the fighting or weren't there for one reason or another.

I'm torn. I hated the civil war storyline and the terrible writing and characterization it embodied and glorified so much I almost stopped collecting comics. Everything that has come after the cw storyline at marvel has in my opinion glorified the fascism the storyline itself and the writers reveled in.

On the other hand these are different versions of the characters, the Avengers themselves were pulled together by the US government (or what ever agency SHIELD answered to) and I can't see the writers and film makers turning the movie version of Tony Stark into the backstabbing scum he was (and still is probably) in the comics. Still we've seen that SHIELD in the movies is about the same as SHIELD in the comics: pathetically run and a complete failure as far as security goes, so for anyone to willingly put themselves under that sort of command is difficult to fathom. I'll say what I said with the cw in the comics before it got started, if the government doesn't want the Avengers to do anything when someone like Ultron shows up then the Avengers should just sit back and wait and see if the government can handle things. But they won't do that of course. It all comes down to what sort of story the film makers want to tell. I can't seem them wanting to anger the fans as much as the comic book writers wanted to anger comic book fans, but with a storyline like this I don't see how it's possible.

Just don't know what to think about this yet.

Oh and I think it's possible that Thor and the Vision are off doing something about the whole Infinity stone thing.

@docholiday: Doesn't matter if Vision isn't in the trailer neither is Spider-Man but they are in the cast.

You complain about Thor not being there when you have been explained he is running a movie with Hulk at the same time civil war takes place. He's most likely dead too. Thor has no place in some American political domestic problem. Not even in the comics was he part of the civil war event.

Strange doesn't care about earthly political nonsense it's beneath him.

I didn't think Rhodey died, but then I remembered Black Goliath's part in the comics! Maybe Rhodey replaces that even if he doesn't die.

You don't actually see Black Panther on Tony's side you just see him fight Bucky.

Wasn't he sort of neutral in the comics?

@lvenger: I don't know if I lost my posts, I hope not I am going to check. Yeah I read that blog that claimed to know the plot line of the film. It would be cool if Spider-Man was saving people while the others were fighting and he turned to them and said "Look what you're doing!!!" That would be a huge moment.

@gotham331: think about the fact that in Winter Soldier, it's revealed that Bucky killed several people, including wait for it... TONY STARK'S PARENTS. Suddenly, Iron Man has every reason to want Bucky in custody or dead, and at the very least, it's far less contrived than "Oh, I'm Iron Man, I'm suddenly responsible."

Thing of it is what would Bucky's legal status be? Frozen for years, brainwashed repeatedly by the Soviet Union and/or HYDRA, I think he could make a pretty good case to get charges dismissed. He wasn't in his right mind, in fact his mental state was deliberately scrambled. Tony might or might not understand that, but at the very least Steve would and get him a good lawyer.
