Best Stuff in Comics This Week: 11-21-16

People often talk about best story arcs, developments, and covers. Here's the other best stuff you might have missed.

No Caption Provided

Every week, we take a look at some of the most bizarre, exciting, and downright unique things to happen in comics. Check out our choices for the strange and wacky things that shouldn't be overlooked from this week's releases.

There may be some tiny spoilers ahead.

Uncanny X-Men Annual #1

Best Batman v Superman "Martha" Reference

No Caption Provided

If you saw Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, you know how the name Martha was able to bring Batman and Superman together. It seems that name causes a similar reaction in the Marvel Universe. Two guards are discussing the name shortly before they're killed.

Superman #11

Best Beginning of a New Friendship

No Caption Provided

Batman and Superman are forcing their sons, Damian and Jon, to go through a super-bootcamp to learn to work together. Damian isn't the most sociable kid, probably because he was raised by the League of Assassins. As they struggle to make it to their next goal, you can see they're starting to get along.

Best Tease for a New Series

No Caption Provided

Super Sons is a new series that was announced earlier this year but has been delayed. This current story arc perfectly sets up the premise and relationship between the young heroes.

Thanos #1

Creepiest Moment

No Caption Provided

Thanos is one of the most evil villains in the Marvel Universe. Seeing him smile is a bizarre and frightening site.

Suicide Squad #6

Best Reason Not to Mess With Amanda Waller

No Caption Provided

Something is happening to everyone at Belle Reve. When Rick Flag can't control himself and threatens Amanda Waller, she reminds him why she's called The Wall.

Strangest Development for Harley Quinn

No Caption Provided

The Suicide Squad was recently sent on a mission to obtain something called the Black Vault. It turns out it's turning everyone in Belle Reve insane. What does that mean for Harley? It's had the opposite effect on her. She's now sane.

All-New Wolverine #14

Best Example That Everyone Wants to Be a Pirate

No Caption Provided

Laura and Gabby have to make a trip to Madripoor. The only way is on a pirate ship. Gabby assumes it's a traditional pirate ship and is excited over the possibility of actually becoming a pirate. Doesn't everyone want to walk around and say, "Arrrr"?

He-Man/Thundercats #2

Best "This Can't Be Good" Moment

No Caption Provided

Skeletor has He-Man's sword. Now he has the power. This turns out to be really bad for He-Man. Hopefully the Thundercats will be able to help.

Doctor Strange #14

Best Reason to Rethink Eating Bacon

No Caption Provided

Are you ever really sure where the bacon you eat comes from? Doctor Strange is forced to eat some. It's not good for him. In fact, it's going to kill him.

Justice League #9

Best Thing to Drink After a Near-Death Experience

No Caption Provided

Batman often puts his life at risk fighting the forces of evil. Sometimes he comes close to getting killed. His drink of choice after this is coffee.

Jessica Jones #2

Best 70s Flashback Reference

No Caption Provided

Way back in 1973's Hero for Hire #9, Luke Cage paid a visit to Doctor Doom to collect $200. The panel where he asks, "Where's my money, honey?" has often been a thing of amazement. In a flashback sequence in the latest issue of Jessica Jones, Luke tells the story as Jessica is going through labor.

Batman #11

Biggest Obstacle in a Relationship

No Caption Provided

Batman and Catwoman have had a complicated relationship over the years. We've learned she just killed 237 people. Batman has no choice to apprehend her even though it would likely lead to her getting the death sentence. That puts quite a kink in the romance department.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #14

Best Canadian Action Figure Variants

No Caption Provided

We've seen the different and strange versions of superhero action figures in store aisles. It turns out, in Canada, they have some interesting designs and accessories for the figures.

Nightwing #9

Best Reason to Have Friends

No Caption Provided

Nightwing is fighting for his life when Dr. Destiny attacks him in his dreams. Luckily, Dick Grayson has a lot of friends and can call upon them in his mind to fight the battle.

Deadpool #22

Worst Way to Wake Up

No Caption Provided

It appeared Deadpool was killed. His body was taken to a hospital and the doctors assumed it was just another regular person that got killed wearing a superhero costume. As they're conducting an autopsy, Deadpool wakes up. It's pretty awkward for everyone involved.

Old Man Logan #13

Best Use of Several Comic Panels to Create a Giant Image

No Caption Provided

Remember when photo mosaic posters were the rage? It was always fascinating to see several small images used to create a giant one. Andrea Sorrentino does that to make a big picture of Logan. It's pretty amazing, especially when you look at a high-res version of it.

That's it for this week. Let us know in the comments below what other Best Stuff you dug this past week. If you want to participate or felt we missed some other Best Stuff, don't complain, contribute, especially if you didn't offer any suggestions. Each week you can @reply me on Twitter at @GManFromHeck by Saturdays using the hashtag #BestStuffInComics. We'll give you a shout out and I'll think you're pretty groovy.

Be sure to always look for the best stuff and always be sure to avoid waking up on an autopsy table if you can help it. No one wants to be in an awkward situation like that.

The final panels during Aquaman #11 were intense and the League coming to him in the hospital. Surprised that wasn't on here. Oh, and Corvus getting a beat down from Thanos....dang. I wonder where Proxima is.

I cant wait for Supersons. Tomasi and Gleason really nailed Superman.

So will Gleason be the artist for Supersons too? Well, I hope so.

Anyways, I'll be checking out Supersons.

Ooh and Batman sucked again. That's it im done.

The Martha thing is old, but there was a chance of it being better if it was just a little more subtle imo.

Bendis trolls us with continuity? Admittedly, Bendis can be an exquisite troll when he's at it.

I'm disappointed you didn't use the "Depth Perception" line from All-New Wolverine. That was the single best moment in the issue.

That Thanos scene reminds me of that scene in Highlander where Kurgan meets that prostitute. "I'm Candy". His response, "yes you are."

Really enjoying He-Man/ThunderCats so far (even if it as of right now a little light on the ThunderCats involvement) a lot more than IDW's 80s cartoon crossover of Transformers, GI Joe and co.

Superman was a lovely issue.

Keen to see what happens in next issue of Batman. :)

I couldn't take the Skeletor image seriously because I read it in his voice from the old animated series.

Just so it's clear...he did get that two hundred dollars out of Doom. Honestly, he should have paid up in the first place. With a generous tip. He's Doctor Doom! He rules Latvaria, a world power! He can afford to pay such a small sum.

@jwp526: One's the New 52 Superman, the other is the pre-Flashpoint Superman who somehow found his way into the New 52 Prime Earth along with his wife, his version of Lois Lane and their son Jon Samuel Kent, Superboy.

It's the guy in the hood between Helena Bertinelli and Cyborg who I don't know. Also, the guy just above Spoiler, Hawk and Dove confused me for a little bit, but then I figured it must be Tempest, right?

I think that's supposed to be Green Arrow, with the hood miscoloured. Look closely at his chin, it's pointed, like his goatee beard.

It appears to be Agent 1 of Spyral, more formally known as Tiger. I believe you're right about Tempest. Who I'm actually having trouble figuring out is the figure in between both Flashes. Could be Constantine except I don't recall them interacting post rebirth or n52 for that matter. I guess you might say Jim Corrigan except it was Dick who went undercover as Corrigan in Grayson Annual #3 in which case they were never actually shown having ever met.

Nice to know Nightwing is still considered a linchpin of the DCU. They missed out Midnighter. A huge ally in both Grayson and Batman & Robin Eternal.

Midnighter will presumably be part of the Wildstorm revival that's to be a separate universe again similar to what they're supposed to be doing with Milestone. I liked the idea of them being integrated into the mainstream DCU and enjoyed Grifter and Team 7's new status quo with ties to Deadshot and Deathstroke. Sucks all that's New52 history now...

@JamesSpiring: I could see that, but I actually think @smoothjammin: is right, that it's Grayson's former partner in Spyral. On that note, Constantine is who I assumed that was, SJ, but if the version of Dick Grayson has never interacted with him, then I don't know.

@koujimoreno: Harley has a history of fighting in the side of angels as well as devils, so she'd at least be a frenemy to some hero. Maybe it's never been with Nightwing since New 52, making her yet another oddity in this scene. This is just turning out more confusing than inspiring.

found this preview for "Red Hood & the Outlaws" this month:

Thug 1: "So we're about to beat this guy up, and he keeps bragging about how he can turn us on each other. But we know he can't cuz' he just told us, so now it won't work."

Thug 2: "And then?"

Thug 1: "So then he showed me this security cam video of one of the guys I was with hitting my aunt in a back alley somewhere"

Thug 2: "Why would there be a camera there? And how would he have known the two of you would be there for him to use it on?"

Thug 1: "I dunno. Anyway we all started fighting about it and we all kinda forgot about the guy we were there to beat up. But then the guys sent me an apology card and I just couldn't stay mad at them."

*Red Hood shows up and caps them both*
