BATMAN BEYOND May Not Be the Book You Expect it to Be

There's a new Batman Beyond book coming. Here's what you need to know and why you'll want to check it out.

When DC announced Dan Jurgens and Bernard Chang were launching a new BATMAN BEYOND series this month, we were a little surprised. Usually the Terry McGinnis stories were seen in miniseries or the Digital First series. This new series was being labeled as "THE definitive future of the DCU." With Terry also appearing in the weekly FUTURES END series, it was nice to see so much attention being given to the former animated favorite. The idea of Jurgens and Chang tweaking and updating the future world of Batman was exciting.

If you read all of FUTURES END, a book Jurgens co-wrote, you might have an idea as to some of the changes we'll see.

No Caption Provided

Things just may be getting a little freaky for Batman Beyond fans. For those that haven't FUTURES END, here's what you need to know.

Terry McGinnis had traveled back in time to try to prevent a horrific catastrophe. We witnessed how the changes with the creation of Brother EYE five years from now started the ball rolling into what would end up ravaging the world and causing the death of many heroes. Terry had met up with Tim Drake, who had managed to survive a battle in which it was thought he and his teammates were killed. Pulled out of retirement, Tim was caught up in this new battle and was there when Terry met his end.

No Caption Provided

Terry may have pushed the fight closer to the end but it was far from over. There was still a lot that needed to be done to save the future. Terry asked Tim to take his place and continue the fight. As reluctant as Tim had been to get back into the action, he simply had no choice.

Because he turned his back on the lifestyle, replacing Terry wasn't immediately accepted by everyone.

No Caption Provided

Because Tim had quit, Batman didn't feel Tim could do the job. His reply wasy, "It takes a lot of nerve putting on a uniform like that." Unfortunately for him, Batman couldn't travel forward in time because of how future Batman had calibrated the jump. Tim's weight and body type was closer to Terry's.

Tim went with the plan and fought Brother EYE. He managed to convince it to destroy itself in order to fulfill it's programming of protecting Earth. Tim was sent on another jump to "whatever replaces that which was." Only he wasn't quite prepared for when he was sent to.

Tim is now in the future and the world doesn't look too great.

No Caption Provided

What this all means is the new BATMAN BEYOND will not feature Terry and the familiar elements we may have been expecting. This will be Tim Drake, thirty years in the future.

No Caption Provided

This is where Batman Beyond fans will start to get upset.

This won't be Terry McGinnis working with old man Bruce and fighting crime while trying to keep a date with Dana. The thing is, we've seen those stories already. With Tim being thrusted into his future, it adds a new twist to the idea. We usually dig the "new hero on the block" stories where they have to figure out their place and adjust to their new abilities. Tim is a fan-favorite character. I've often heard many cite him as their favorite Robin. This is, in some ways, also an evolution for Tim. He now gets to be Batman. Only now it's in the future. We've seen him do great things. How will he handle what the future will throw at him?

There will be some familiar elements. Despite what we saw in the Sneak Peek, Neo-Gotham still exists along with Wayne-Powers. There'll be Jokerz running around in the first issue. We'll also see some familiar faces and Tim will have to deal with explaining what happened to Terry.

No Caption Provided

Like many others, I would absolutely love to see Jurgens and Chang write on ongoing with Terry. The recent BATMAN BEYOND 2.0 by Kyle Higgins and Alec Siegel was fantastic. To those that might be outraged now, I wonder were they supporting that series?

This new BATMAN BEYOND series isn't what we first thought it would be. There will be some adjusting on our part, as well as Tim's. This will be a different take. Change isn't necessarily a bad thing. There'll be more of the unknown being thrown at us instead of trying to recreate the glorious vibe from the animated series. I just hope we'll get to see Ace the Bat-Hound at some point. Also, with the events of Convergence and the state of the Multiverse, Terry McGinnis can still exist.

Tim is my absolute favorite robin but this is kind of crappy that they aren't using Terry. At least Tim gets to be batman for once though. Should be cool

I like, Tim, and that image of the mask revealing his face is awesome.

I've never been terribly impressed w/Jurgens as a writer (as a penciler, yes).

So, I'd have to say this is a pass for me. In the TV series, they seemed to be setting up Max as his Batgirl and his brother to potentially be Robin. It never went in that direction and, to my knowledge, neither did any of the BB comics...but it just says to me there's still plenty to mine in McGuiness' world.

@artisticneedham: I believe Terry stated, in the series, he wasn't wearing a Robin costume and they even toyed with the idea of if Batman is the suit or the man in the suit, when Terry managed to beat it while it was controlled by a virus. I'm pretty sure he was wearing Nightwing's mask and ended up fighting with a staff, much like Drake.

I like this. If the DCAU Terry McGinnis is your Batman Beyond there are plenty of stories to read about him fighting crime in future Gotham. I read Futures End from beginning to end and Terry was portrayed more like Bruce because of Brother Eye ruining their future. The Batman Beyond that came back was nothing like the one I watched as a child, wasn't wise cracking and balancing personal issues at the same time. Which was ok because Kyle Higgins just finished an amazing story with that character. So if you missed that these last few years how big of a Terry McGinnis fan can you be? Tim has been the least fleshed out Bat character until Futures End showed another side of him, one not willing to fight, estranged from Bruce and thrust back into the hero game by Terry and his knowledge of what Brother Eye would do. In my opinion Terry in the mainstream DC universe served his purpose perfectly, he got Batman's true heir to take charge and the events of Futures End gave him a new setting to be The Batman. And hey when Tim left for the future I'm pretty sure Terry wasn't born yet so there's still a chance he can come in eventually, time travel being what it is.

So because Tim got shafted, that means Terry gets shafted in his first mainstream appearance? Seems to me they could have just done a Red Robin series since I think that's what Tim fans wanted from the start, considering the appeal it had pre-Flashpoint.

Anywho, my current stance on the issue is:

Both Tim & Terry are some of my favorite characters but I don't know about this, I mean if they wanted to push Tim why put him in a Batman Beyond book off all places? Even if Terry does show up its probably going to be some adulterate version.

@artisticneedham: He isn't dead but this turn of events is stupid. Tim Drake can still play a big role in the present but the future belongs to Terry McGinnis. We will just have to wait and see how Tim Drake can repair this broken down future.

I have been following the Batman Beyond since they started immediately after the movie Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. I have read Industrial Revolution, Hush Beyond, Night of 10,000 Clowns, Batgirl Beyond (that was the fourth volume of Batman Beyond). I have also read Superman Beyond: Man of Tomorrow (stand alone volume) and all three Justice League Beyond volumes (In Gods We Trust, Power Struggle, and Konstriction). I have also read all of the Batman Beyond 2.0 comics to date Rewired and Justice Lords Beyond.

Well considering how Terry "died" 5 years into the current DC timeline there is a very small chance that he could still be alive. Then again that's just wishful thinking.

I have no problem with DC killing off the "Future's End" version of Terry and having Tim Drake take over the role in that possible future, however the need to leave the DCAU version of Terry alive and as Batman in the mainstream Batman Beyond 2.0 stories. The official designation of the DCAU-verse is now Earth 12 so they can let Terry from the shows continue on for us Batman Beyond fans, while killing Earth 0(?) version of Terry who was in the "Future's End" event.

@g_man: Nice writing, this article. I love the Terry character, but Tim as Batman? Finally? Yes, please. It's not quite Tim as Blue Beetle in the present, which is something Chuck Dixon was headed towards at one point, but this definitely has potential to be better. The Terry character will be missed though.

@artisticneedham: One of the episodes of Batman Beyond had Terry's suit get possessed by an AI or someone like Hank Henshaw and Terry realized that the only way to defeat it was to fight it using outdated tech. He put on the Nightwing mask and a old Batman belt and beat it. This convinced Terry to quit relying entirely upon the suit. In the comics (that take place after the show/movie) Terry has continued to train himself to not rely upon the suit. Also, I would recommend looking at all the "canon" Beyond characters. There is a new Flash and she is faster than Wally (and has Jay Garrek, Barry Allen, Wally West, and Bart Allen talking to her through the Speed Force). SHAZAM/Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) is back, but he is forced to share his body with The Wizard (Shazam), Black Adam, Mary Marvel, and CM2.

There is someone like your "Wonderman" he is the son of Lord Kal-El and regular Wonder Woman and his name is Zod-Ur.

As for Booster Gold, I like his Post-"original 52" version seen in the series B00ster (00 = infinity sign) Gold. So, I would like to see him as a Time Master. I would also like to see an adult Jamie Reyes aka Blue Beetle III and see his little sister as a Green Lantern.

the main problem I had with the final issues of futures end was

"Unfortunately for him, Batman couldn't travel forward in time because of how future Batman had calibrated the jump. Tim's weight and body type was closer to Terry's."

that is an incorrect statement. at the beginning of futures end the plan was for Bruce to go back in time, not Terry, but Bruce was injured and terry had to go instead.

The reason that Terry arrived after brother eye had already been created was that time travel device was configured to Bruce's weight and body type.

Yeah, I didn't get this either. But still, I'd rather have Terry back than having Tim as Batman. Last time Tim tried being Batman, Jason beat him senseless.

I'm going to be honest, I don't read much Batman; mostly because of budget and my interest in other characters. But Batman Beyond was my childhood and when this book was announced i nearly flipped my chair (metaphorically speaking). That being said, I really want Terry but you know what, I won't complain. I didnt support the non-canon batman beyond like a should have so I don't really have a right to. I'll wait for this to unfold and see the new direction, and hopefully Terry will make his return. Until then, I'm hoping for the best.

As a continuation of the cliff-hanger ending Future's End had I'll probably get this. I also see no reason as to why Terry McGinnis would be dead. In the last Future's End issues I think it was revealed that although Terry's time traveling didn't stop Brother Eye it did bring about some changes such as Ray Palmer and Tim's Girlfriend being alive and apart of a Resistance. One of the repercussions could be Terry not going back in time at all or maybe the series starts before Terry goes back.

DC flipping a huge bird to us fans who read Higgins outstanding 2.0 publication(in my case started reading even further back when Beechen was onboard) on top of those of us who grew up watching the show on WB. Adoring the show. It still holds up well and for those of you with Netflix, you're in luck. The entire series is available, every episode, every season. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Tim Drake is the ultimate imposter. He doesn't know whether he's impersonating Nightwing(see unternet costume; Olympic level Acrobat post flashpoint smh), biting on Robin/Red Robin(again not his) identities or claiming his mentors mantle. Ironically he'd probably work best as a successor to Ted Kord. He mentioned in his Robin publication Ted Kord was his idol, after all.

What better way to honor him than to don the man's costume. Yeah on second thought Tim should just eff off and leave the batfamily altogether. Move to Hub City. He'd likely find a way to take ownership of Kord Industries with it being a subsidiary of Wayne Enterprises and Bruce giving him leeway to run things.

Barbra got paralyzed. Now that I think about it, every single Robin has died or at least "died". Dick had his heart stopped momentarily. Jason was killed by the Joker. Tim faked his death during the war that took place in Futures End. Damian was actually killed by Heretic. And Terry who was never a Robin just recently died. Honestly I think I could have done a better job in bringing Terry into main continuity after Futures End than what DC did.

that's too bad for the Terry fans, but i'm super happy about this. Why?

Tim was better as Batman, not in that Battle for the Cowl thing but in the alternate future where Titans (or, Young Justice) takes over as the League members. Tim would be scarier than Bruce, if he ever made it there. Half the time he's questioning if what they're fighting for is worth anything, if they're actually making a change. He wants to give up the Bat moniker. But IF he became Batman,...

Plus he IS a younger version of Batman. Their characters are so much similar, it's as if Tim's story is "Batman: The missing years" Oh, and he also had to go to Paris, train with Shiva, learn weapons AND... did you know he flew into a warzone? He's a step above Dick, both in intelligence and rogues gallery.

Dan Jurgens is a great writer but let's be real, he got screwed on this. People grew up loving Terry McGinnis as Batman not Tim. So right off the bat this book won't be selling because it's not the character we know and love. I get they want to try something new but honestly the story could have still be fresh and new if they had kept Terry in the suit rather than Tim.

I'll be honest, I hate this idea and feel that this is just a slap in the face from DC to every fan who wanted to see Batman Beyond a part of the mainstream DCU. That means, fans who wanted THE Batman Beyond, which is Terry McGinnis.

By killing Terry off and giving the suit randomly to Tim is just disrespectful to all of the fans of the original TV series and those who followed the Batman Beyond digital comic series. With both the show and digital comic cancelled, fans like myself were bummed, but were given hope when it was announced that Terry would be returning in the main DCU. Yet, now with Terry dead and Tim in the role, fans of Terry are left with nothing once more, which feels like a slap in the face from DC as they've basically made Batman Beyond a mantle when it has always been about Terry McGinnis struggling to be the Batman of Tomorrow.

I understand that DC is trying to appeal to Tim Drake fans, but stealing the mantle of another character who has a pretty decent fanbase and giving it to Tim isn't how to appeal to Tim's fanbase. Instead, DC should have instead focused on Tim as Red Robin and given Terry and his fanbase some love by exploring the possibilities of that character now being a part of the main DCU.
