Awesome Toy Picks: Batman Black and White Sean Murphy Statue

A cool collectible you'll want to add to your collection.

Each week we like to take a close look at a comic book collectible. That means taking it out of the packaging. Even though the title says "toy," we sometimes look at some high end collectibles, including statues. This week we have the fiftieth edition in the Batman Black & White statue line, the Sean Murphy edition.

It's always cool to see the box for these because each is in a different size to accommodate the statue. There's also a sketch of the artist's design on the box so you can see what the sculptor based the statue off of. It's also great that it gives credit to who sculpted it. In this case, Jonathan Matthews.

Sean decided to try a different pose with his design. Batman doing a hand-plant definitely makes it stand out from the other ones.

Sean's art sometimes has a tough/gritty look to it. That's what I love about his Batman. Batman is a guy that is going to jump into the action. Bruce Wayne may be a rich pretty boy but that doesn't apply to Batman.

I seem to recall at San Diego Comic-Con overhearing that a metal pin was used inside the arm in order to give it more strength. This statue was definitely a challenge and one the sculptor gladly took on.

The batarang and wire were also a nice touch. It's nice to have something with a little more give on the statue to stand out from the sculpted parts.

The detail in his hand holding the batarang is impressive as well.

Sean went with a different, more punk-style for Batman's boots. What's really cool is seeing a tiny Bat-symbol on the bottom.

Sean also decided to give Batman a 'Dark Knight Stick' to add to the accessories. It looks great as it adds to the motion of the pose, hanging off Batman's utility belt.

It is impressive seeing this whole figure balancing on the one arm. Again, this pose really makes it stand apart from the other (amazing) pieces in the series.

One thing you'll want to be careful with is with his gloves. You can see the fins are really thin. (Isn't there another name for those fins?)

The slightly raised look of the Bat-emblem on his chest was also nice touch.

It's a great looking piece. All of the Black and White statues are impressive but this one has such a great look to it because of the action pose.

You might be thinking to yourself, "Yeah, this statue looks great, but I can't afford to spend that much money on a collectible."

It's actually reasonably priced. You can maybe find it at your local comic shop or you can easily order it directly from DC Collectibles HERE. The price is only $79.95. The dimensions are 8.2 high x 4.75 wide x 3 inches deep. If you're a fan of Batman and Sean Murphy, you definitely want to get this.

This "Awesome Toy Picks" section of CV is both one of my favorite parts of CV, and one of my least favorite. Favorite because now I know about an awesome Batman statue by SGM, but least favorite because now I feel like I have to shell out $80 to buy it. As always, thanks a lot.

I started collecting a few Black and White statues last year so I might have to spring for this one. Ive got the Rogers, Quitely, Jock and Nguyen Beyond statues. Im also definatley adding the Capullo Batman and Joker statues later on this year so I may have to pass on this one to save a bit of money. Its certainly tempting though.

However, after the sticker shock I'm being really choosy. I'm kinda eyeing the Neal Adams one now.

With all the excellent craftsmanship that went into that finely shaped buttocks it'd be offensive if they didn't.

I used to collect this line. I currently own the Paul Pope and George Perez ones, but I also used to own the Jim Lee (which I sold), the Ethan Van Sciver (which I also sold) and the Andy Kubert (which my girlfriend broke by accident) version.

I stopped collecting them because I shifted my collection from those smaller statues to bigger ones, like Kotobukiyas 1/6 size or Sideshows Premium Formats in 1/4 and next to those paying almost 80 for the very small black and whites looks suddenly like way too much money for a way too small statue, especially since thsoe Kotos, which are more than double the size, only cost 20 dollars more.

But I have to admit, this Sean Murphy one has been on my radar since it has been announced and I even had it on preorder for a while. Its awesome and one of the best sculpts of a Batman statue ever. Its still way too small for my current tastes, so I don't think I will get it, even if I kinda want to.

This looks really great. I'm a huge Sean Murphy fan. Got a couple of B&W statues already. Jim Lee Joker and Jock Batman.

The look of the figure is great, but I just can't help but think that the Batman figure's arm is ready to break off after any slight bump. Great sculpture, but awkward pose for a display figure.

It's actually reasonably priced. You can maybe find it at your local comic shop or you can easily order it directly from DC Collectibles HERE. The price is only $79.95.

$80 for something that I can only look at seems like a lot of money to spend to me. I'm not a collector so I don't know hoe much people usually spend on these kinds of things. If $80 is considered affordable then I assume people spend a lot.

@lurkero: You can check out their other current statues HERE. But you can see the busts normally go for $70 (although many appear on sale). There's a Batman DKR (on a horse) for $400. As for the arm, it's pretty solid. It's balanced nicely. I'd be more concerned about the 'fins' on his arms breaking off.

This is gonna be my first statue, I ordered mine from my shop and Diamond has not delivered it yet. But my shop said Diamond guarantees them one and that they are shipping the statues in waves. Hopefully it comes soon, these pictures look rad.

The Batman: Black and White statues are always rad, this one especially, but I need less stuff in my house, not more, and they're too expensive for me to justify most of the time anyway.

I would love to see an "Awesome toy picks" look at the new Nightwing Arkham City statue! Any way you can make it happen?
