Ann Rice's Vampire Chronicles Returns With Robert Downey Jr?

Will Tony Stark become the vampire Lestat?

No Caption Provided

Robert Downey Jr. had been impressing a lot of people lately.  According to Bloody Disgusting, Universal is hoping to cash in on the current vampire craze and wants to bring back Ann Rice's The Vampire Chronicles.  These deal with the story of vampire Lestat Du Lioncort, and are often narrated in first person.

The latest is Universal is in close talks with Robert Downey Jr to play the role of Lestat.  This isn't the first time Lestat has been seen on the big screen.  In 1994, Tom Cruise sunk his teeth into the role in Interview With The Vampire and Stuart Townsend took on the role in 2002's Queen Of The Damned.

It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.  We can assume that Universal is looking for a franchise with The Vampire Chronicles.  If Robert Downey Jr does take on the role, how many could he do?  He's also tied into The Avengers and Iron Man 3 as well as the inevitable Sherlock Holmes sequel (assuming this winter's movie will be a success).  He's becoming quite the busy guy.

Do you think he could take on the role of the Vampire Lestat?  Are you a fan of Ann Rice or the Vampire novels?  Do you think this could put Downey's other movies on hold?  Did you see the other Ann Rice movies?  Do we need more vampire flicks?

I am SO bored of all this vampire stuff already.  I like Robert Downey Jnr, but not enough to see him as Lestat.  I'd wait for it to be on TV.

I hope they don't remake Interview With a Vampire.  it's an epic film and the acting was incredible, especially from Tom Cruise as Lestat.

- Hm ... I don't think RDJ could play Lestat though,
I prefer him in comedic-esque roles and Lestat is humorous, just not in the RDJ way.

Robert Downey is too good of an actor to be in a movie that's just a cash grab. Also vampire are the new zombies, PLAYED OUT. Start making movies about Dragon People from Space!

Well I'm a huge fan of the books and I think Robert could pull off Lestat, in my opinion though they should really stick to the novels more, but should be cool if they finish off the series.

@AngelFrost: You need to go back and watch RDJ's older films, this role would be a walk in the park for him.

Interview is one of maybe 5 vamp movies I don't hate. So I'd be glad to see RDJ do it as he's been one of my 3 fav actors for the better part of a decade. He would have no issue filming it seeing as how he's made 4 or 5 BIG films in the last 12 months.

You need to watch more movies of you think that's all he plays.

-Chaplin
-Good night, and Good luck
-Charlie Barlet
-Zodiac
Heck Even Tropic Thunder

Any of these will help you see the range of his not smart A style acting.

LMAO.  Thanks "Twilight".  However personally I'm still a "sucker' for Vampires. I'm still waiting for my Vampirella movie.  Regardless I'd watch this if RD Jr. was in it.

Robert Downey Jr. is so far from Lestat it's not even funny. He's an amazing actor but this is NOT the role for him.

Maybe Robert Downey Jr. is trying to remain busy for the same reason Sherlock Holmes did. (That's an inside joke for avid Holmes readers.)

I'm not sure if this new VampireChronicles movie would work. The last one was horrible, but it was a mixture of multiple books in one movie. That never works out right. I seriously like him for Sherlock. Holmes. I'd much rather see him in that role a few times.

more Rice stuff was inevitable eitherway.
not sure about Downey, granted he's a good actor and can stretch, but im not seeing it for some reason.
if i were to cast him in a vampire role myself it would be for something corny like Bordello Of Blood or likewise.

I'm not really sure about this. Ever since those abominable Twilight novels were released, everyone's been cashing in on it. I can't even go to my library even more without some new vampire book on display.

I like vampires, but I think they are being over-used right now.

I think its because its been over-hyped. It was an alright movie, but the way people are obsessed with it is ridiculous in comparison to the fact that there have been better vampire novels (and a few movies) in the past.

although in response to Akwa's post about vampires being over-used, Ive heard people say the same thing about comic book movies, in regards to how many are being made right now. In the end you cant please everyone

it appeals to a demographic that other vampire movies haven't though. It'd be like comparing the Incredibles to  Iron man.

Your right, it appeals to a teenage girl demographic because the over all story is a dumbned down version of other, more involved vampire novels, such as Anne Rice's VC. Its supposedly modernized and more relatiable, but really its just simpler and easier for the average person to grasp.

RDJ can play just about anything, but  I kinda hate everything Anne Rice puts out, because she invented the emo pretty vampire, that eventually led to Twilight's creation

@pixelized:
Im not saying its the same story, but it has similar themes. And I also would say the same thing about the Incredibles and Iron Man if I were going to compare them, they both have similar themes, but one is for children (leaving certain adult elements more ambiguous rather than out right stating them) and the other is for everyone else. It doesnt mean that either is any less enjoyable.

they're the same type of movie so they're going to have the same elements, but it's like you were saying twilight is the 1610 version of Anne's VC

I am a big Anne Rice fan and I would love to see Robert take on the role of Lestat as I think the other two actors did a terrible job of portraying the character.

Hate to admit but I do believe you're quite right with that assertion.  That's a good observation.

However I have to say RD Jr. wold  be pretty kick-ass as a Vampire.   Granted INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE did have some rather "homoerotic" overtones to it.   I just hope if RD Jr. plays Lestat they won't go that route.  However it IS Hollywood.

@Decept-O: lol it was the book that had homoerotic overtones, so if they stay true to the book it probably will. All her books have that in them I think

@Lifeguard85:  The first movie did have some overtones as I mentioned, especially between Brad Pitt's and Antonio Banderas' characters, at least to me.  No I am NOT reading into something I want in terms of the movie!   Can you spell homophobe?  Bwaa Haa Haa!

I'm aware the books have even more "salacious" themes than was portrayed in the movie and like you stated if they stay close to the source material it will show up again.  However I am HOPING it won't but that's just me.  I just think RD Jr. could play a pretty bad-ass yet appealing Vampire especially for "Da Wommens".

Downy's better than this. Tom Cruise hasn't been working much though, and he did a good job last time in the only Anne Rice adaptation that didn't suck. Bring him back.
Still, its worth noting nobody thought Tom was a right fit for the part and he did something with it. Downey's a bit of a chameleon too. But they're both maybe a bit old for it.   Josh Hartnett? He's pretty and he can be a bit of a monster (think 0, the end of Lucky # Sleven) and he'll probably look the way he does now for another good 15 years at least.

... No. Townsend tried, he failed, and as much as I respect RDJ, he can't top Cruise's Lestat. That is and always will be the only movie I will applaud with Cruise as lead.
