Animated Batman: The Killing Joke Receives R Rating

This will be the first non-PG/PG-13 movie in the DC franchise.

This shouldn't come to much of a surprise given the source material and the recent success of the R-rated Deadpool movie. When Warner Bros. Home Entertainment released the animated Batman: The Killing Joke feature, it will be with an R-rating.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has accepted the MPAA’s “R” rating for its upcoming animated film, Batman: The Killing Joke, choosing to remain true to the landmark DC Comics graphic novel’s violent, controversial story, and making the film the first non-PG/PG-13 rated movie in the nine-year history of the DC Universe Original Movie franchise.

Batman: The Killing Joke, one of the best-selling graphic novels in history, tells the tale of The Joker’s origin story – from his humble beginnings as a struggling comic, to his fateful encounter with Batman that changes both of their lives forever. Actors Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprise their Batman: The Animated Series roles as Batman and The Joker, respectively.

Since its inception in 2007, the DC Universe Original Movie franchise has brought classic and current DC Comics stories and characters to animated life through a series of primarily PG-13 rated films. Throughout the 26-film history of this popular franchise, Warner Bros. Animation, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment have crafted animated productions that appeal to the adult fan – from adaptations of fan favorite stories (Superman: Doomsday, Justice League: The New Frontier, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns) to liberal adaptations of contemporary tales (Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, Batman: Bad Blood, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox) to original narratives (Batman: Gotham Knight, Wonder Woman, Justice League: Gods & Monsters).

Animation visionary Bruce Timm guided the DC Universe Original Movie franchise for its initial 16 films, then returned last summer with his own original story, Justice League: Gods & Monsters. Timm takes the reigns once again for Batman: The Killing Joke, reuniting a trio of actors (Conroy, Hamill & Tara Strong) from the game-changing Batman: The Animated Series cast to add even greater reverence to this heralded tale. Recognizing the fans’ dedication to the highly acclaimed graphic novel, Timm has worked meticulously to accurately maintain the intense adult content of The Killing Joke.

“From the start of production, we encouraged producer Bruce Timm and our team at Warner Bros. Animation to remain faithful to the original story – regardless of the eventual MPAA rating,” said Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation & Warner Digital Series. “The Killing Joke is revered by the fans, particularly for its blunt, often-shocking adult themes and situations. We felt it was our responsibility to present our core audience – the comics-loving community – with an animated film that authentically represented the tale they know all too well.”

At this time, there are no plans for an edited, PG-13 version of the film.

A two-time Eisner Award winner written by renowned comics author Alan Moore, Batman: The Killing Joke has maintained an unparalleled popularity throughout its 28 years of existence – as evidenced by its ranking as the best-selling graphic novel of 2015. Batman: The Killing Joke was greenlit in 2013 and announced in July 2015 at Comic Con International in San Diego.

Batman: The Killing Joke also features the voices of Tara Strong (Teen Titans; Batman: Arkham games), as Barbara Gordon and Ray Wise (Twin Peaks, RoboCop) as Commissioner Gordon. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will host the film’s World Premiere at Comic-Con International this summer, and see a subsequent release in 2016 on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital HD.

First Arkham Knight. then the Director's Cut of Batman v Superman and now this.

More and more Batman stuff are getting the R Rating these days.

@anjales_ii: The director of Suicide Squad said that if the sequel allowed him to make it rated R he'd be interested in doing it.

@anjales_ii: I also think that animated suicide squad ( labeled as a batman movie for sale ) was also rated R.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand why is this so critically acclaimed...??
I mean, sure it tells the backstory of Joker and has a universe changing effect (Crippling of Barbera) but other than that, there isn't much depth nor is the joke that Joker tells Batman funny... No one dies so it is not even true to the name..This is the point where it ruined Joker for me as there wasn't supposed to be any knowledge on the character's past and he was supposed to remain a mystery..

@abdullahzubair: The "Killing Joke", as in it was a joke. No one was killed.

If you subscribe to the idea that TKJ is a stand-alone non-canon graphic novel, then the actual "Killing Joke" could also be Batman killing Joker at the end.

I'm glad to hear of the creative team's commitment to the nature of the source material but is a hard R rating necessary? It's not as gory or dare I say it as shocking as some of the stuff DC have released, even in terms of animation. One can say that means it's going to be even more shocking than Gods and Monsters but narrowing the audience for an animated direct to DVD movie is risky. Still, all the more reason for me to actually buy The Killing Joke rather than watch it online.

1. I'm not at all surprised.

2. What are the odds someone's going to buy it for little Billy anyway?

Arkham Knight, which didn't need it, Batman v Superman, Telltale's Batman game, the possible Suicide Squad sequel, and this. DC really wants to make Batman edgy.

Well..than those people that bought it when it was first released must have felt disapointed and cheated if that was the meaning of the name...I just read it last year so it isn't hurting me much...

And Batman didn't kill Joker at the end so I can't imagine something like that...But, if the title was Killing Joker than it is very plausable..

@slayz: @abdullahzubair: actually, the ending is left to the readers interpretation, but Alan moore has said that he intended the last panel to represent batman finally killing joker. So that is what the title refers to

Well...Joker didn't do anything of an extreme in that comic...I mean, he has killed thousands in other stories and he just crippled a girl in this and made her father run around naked...I think killing him is too harsh in just this one situation...

@abdullahzubair: well I'm just telling you the facts. This story is a stand alone graphic novel. The only thing that was integrated into the DC canon was that joker shot and crippled Barbara Gordon. But according to Alan Moore, batman does kill the joker at the end

@abdullahzubair: Please forgive me if I am wrong in assuming. But your comment and take on the story seems as if you only recently read the story, in the past year or two?

And I assume this because to have read the story before the NEW 52 era...especially when it first came out in '87-'89 I think? it was a very impactful story. The themes were intense in itself with a father being tortured with images of his daughter's suffering

But also this was really the first story that gave some insight into how the Joker came to be.

So at the time of release it was a game changer, but fast forward to 2016..Not really sure if it would be as impactful as A 'Death Of A Family' was for this era of comics

I probably would not have pushed to hard for this be an R Rated movie. You have the graphic pictures and a naked Jim Gordon, but you could still get the point across with crossing into that R Rating territory.

To me, this isn't what made that story so good, Hopefully they are able to nail the emotional content and make you feel empathy for the chain of events that lead to Joker becoming what he was.

if they can pull that off, the language and imagery will only add to the overall tone. I am looking forward to this

When did Alan Moore say that? I need a source. The first time I ever heard anyone say "Batman kills Joker at the end of TKJ" was when Kevin Smith was interviewing Grant Morrison a couple years ago and Morrison said he interprets the story that way personally.

You are definitely right...I read it last year and was confused why it was so popular as it was just another joker story..Death of the family isn't the best joker story (Death in the family is best imo) but it clearly seemed more intense and horrifying than the killing joke....It must one of those era stories which don't pass well with time...Thanks for taking your time and writing it down...

I re-read the deluxe edition and at the end of the story, there is an epilogue sort of dialogue written by Alan Moore where he says his thanks to the makers and all and then says something like, now to what actually happened at the end, both of them laughed, reflection in the puddle, police sirens, batman's hands went forward and" this is how he leaves it...So he could possibly mean batman strangles him or either grabs him and takes him to Arkham....Readers choice...

Now if they finally showed Batman killing the joker, then it would have been way more impactful....And they could have gotten away with it as it was a one shot...

Its probably because of the thematic (and the current Deadpool hype). Having Gordon dragged naked in an S&M outfit by weird looking short people dressed as cupids, seeing his daughter beaten and naked with a suspicion of rape....is something that should be R.

Batman will snap Jokers neck with his bare hands. Batman kills again is just true to comics. Perfect. Hopefully the live action movie of Batman will continue in the same manner.
