After 14 Years, Jean Grey Returns To Marvel Comics

In December, the miniseries Phoenix: Resurrection brings back adult Jean Grey for the first time since her death in New X-Men.

Death isn't forever in comics. In 2003, Jean Grey died during an iconic run on New X-Men by acclaimed writer Grant Morrison. Since then, that version of Grey has been dead, but this December, Grey will return in the five-issue miniseries Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey.

No Caption Provided

The new story written by Matthew Rosenberg and drawn by Leinil Yu will follow--you guessed it--the resurrection of one of the original five X-Men: "Strange events are no surprise to the X-Men," reads the official synopsis from Marvel. "But when events start occurring that are more specific and stranger than usual, the group is forced to confront the truth: could Jean be alive after all? And how will this Jean Grey deal with a world that is now so different from the one she left years ago?"

The story is still a pretty big mystery at the moment, but the upcoming months in the current X-Men titles should shed some light on what's coming ahead. "This is very cool mystery building to a mind-warping climax," said senior editor Mark Paniccia. "And it has plenty of what you’d expect from an X-Men epic of this magnitude. Action, romance, sacrifice, lots of X-Men, and five great artists."

In addition to Yu, the series will feature five artists taking on the story. It has yet to be revealed how that is going to come into play, whether each issue will be an individual artist or all five will be featured in each issue.

Jean Grey does currently exist in the Marvel universe, as a version of her from the past has been living in the present for the past few years. However, the teenage Jean Grey doesn't have the experience, memories, or the connection to the Phoenix Force of her future counterpart.

It will be extremely interesting to see these two characters meet and find out how the adult Jean Grey reacts to her younger counterpart, the deaths of Cyclops and Wolverine, and an older Logan from a parallel world currently on the X-Men. Again, this mutant team is no stranger to the strange.

Phoenix Resurrection will hit stores on December 27, and interestingly enough, Phoenix will be returning to comics 11 months before the big screen adaptation of the legendary story The Dark Phoenix Saga. X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to release on November 2, 2018.

. . . Nah, no thanks. I'll continue to sit X-Men comics out.

Never was big on Jean, and they really should retire who Phoenix for like . . . a decade, maybe two, for good measure.

Well not surprising. MARVEL has been doubling up on characters as of late.

Glad she will be back. And everyone said it wouldn't take long to bring her back. They were wrong.

I am just wondering what identity Jean will also have, maybe transgender or even transpecies.

Can't wait to see how Marvel ruins this.

I'm glad to see her back, but... Marvel will find a way to mess this up. I would rather they leave Jean in the grave than completely ruin her character. Hopefully they prove me wrong.

Marvel should have left Jean Grey DEAD. It would have been better if Scott Summers remained married to Madelyne Pryor. The idea of bring back Jean the first time around is what led to whole bringing back characters from the dead abuse, such as bringing back Norman Osborn, who should have stayed dead.

Yeah, as if Marvel is runnning out of plot mechanics/deus ex machina characters that can cheaply turn a long time playboy into gay or anti-NAZI propaganda character into a Hydra symphatizer.

Her death had probably made her realized that she is a closet lesbian, marginalize, undocumented migrant, quad-racial hypochodriac or something that will make her relevant to Marvel's diversity agenda.

Yeah Jean should have stayed dead, there are enough deaths in comics that don't stick and Jean at least came back only to die again. Plus there's already a Jean Grey in the Marvel Universe thanks to the time displaced X-Men.

Granted if there was one character that it would be ok to come back it would be her. She has a fundamental reason too with the whole Phoenix thing.

It's not so much a hate for Jean as a hate for current Marvel staff.

I know plenty of great comic people who could tell a great story with Jean; Mark Waid, Mark Millar, Alan Moore but current Marvel writers are garbage

i hate to butt in but Matthew Rosenburg was the writer of the most recent Kingpin series (arguably one of the best things to come out of Modern Marvel.)

so IF there was anyone to write Jean in modern marvel id want it to be Rosenburg... i think he really surprised everyone with his Kingpin series and i think he can surprise us again.

Honestly, I've abandoned Marvel and nearly all of DC. I check in now and then but I rarely read anything. I am into a lot of lesser known/lesser read comics.

If you have a chance, check out Invincible from Robert Kirkman, if you want a long series

If you want something short then I recommend Irredeemable and Incorruptible by Mark Waid or if you prefer Millar, then check out Kick-Ass, Nemesis, Super Crooks, Superior or MPH. Millar has a way of writing realistic people in super hero scenarios.

Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't been reading anything else except Rebirth and a few old stories from Marvel and DC. But anything new is welcomed.

Invincible is a nice take on a sort of Superman like character but with more realistic behavior, it's a long series and the side-characters are interesting.

I will say, almost anything Millar writers (in my opinion) is gold

I do suggest you look up other stuff from Image, Boom or Valiant. Branch out, worst case scenario...it sucks :P

Love the enthusiasm.

Cyclops: "Jean, you're back!?"

Jean: "Of course Scott, what? A woman can't return from the dead on her own? She needs a man to do it!? Educate yourself Scott!"

Cyclops: "Jean, I just mean I am surprised, we all were crushed when you died. I cried, Logan cried, even some of the Avengers were there, Falcon...he cried like a baby!"

Jean: "So what, black men can't cry? Black cries matter Scott!"

I like Jean ... but she was already given a decent ending to her story in Morrison's era. Why bother bringing her back?

Marvel's just gonna find a way to ruin this for sure.

Don't know how to feel about this. It kinda smells like desperation on Marvel's part. Rosenberg might be pretty cool but really how will Marvel do this without messing it up and cheapening the character even more. I mean we got AVX, All New Xmen , BOTA, IVX, DOX from them and do we really have any confidence in what they will do???
