10 Comics to Buy This Week: 5/30/2012

Recommendations for this week's books? Yup, we've got 'em!

Welcome back to 10 Comics to Buy This Week. As you're probably well aware, there are a metric crap-ton of comic books hitting shelves every single week. And for the common consumer, it's financially impossible to pick up everything. That's where this column steps in like your superhero savior, drawing your attention to 10 books worth your hard-earned dollars during any given week.

We not only going to spotlight tights and capes books, but also some indie titles off the beaten path, which, if all goes well, will broaden your reading horizons.

American Vampire #27

No Caption Provided

The concluding chapter of “The Nocturnes” is here. Calvin Poole has found himself in quite the pickle, stuck between a town that hates him and a new, vicious species of blood sucker. It’s going to be interesting to see how Poole evades death in this issue – if he manages to accomplish that in the first place. American Vampire #27 also features the return of a major character.

America’s Got Powers #2

No Caption Provided

The first issue of America’s Got Powers definitely surprised us; not only was the book well written by Jonathan Ross and expertly drawn by Bryan Hitch, but the story took a turn we didn’t expect. That’s why we’re excited to crack into the book’s second issue this week. Will Tommy Watt’s dreams of being a super-powered celebrity come true? Or will the world’s most famous reality show be cancelled before Tommy has a chance to make his mark?

Animal Man Annual #1

No Caption Provided

Jeff Lemire is joined by artist Timothy Green for a special one-shot, detailing the history of The Red, The Green and The Rot. This issue ties into both Lemire’s ongoing Animal Saga, as well as Scott Snyder’s Swamp Thing series. Fans of either/both series should not miss this issue.

Batman Annual #1

No Caption Provided

The second major annual coming out this week centers on Batman and ties into the current “Night of the Owls” event. Written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Jason Fabok, Batman Annual #1 introduces Mister Freeze into the New 52 DCU. What role does he have to play in the Night of the Owls crossover? Tune in to this special issue to find out!

Batman: Death by Design HC

No Caption Provided

Writer Chip Kidd and artist Dave Taylor bring you this breathtakingly beautiful Batman story that merges the world of the Dark Knight with classic Hollywood cinema. Death by Design has been three years in the making, so it’s exciting to finally be able to get our hands on the book this week. Here’s hoping all the time spent making it has been worthwhile.

FF #18

No Caption Provided

The Future Foundation takes their first field trip – to the Negative Zone. What will happen when the group brings Annihilus home? This issue will also feature the return of Future Franklin and Val. Oh, and bugs. Lots, and lots of bugs.

Grim Leaper #1

No Caption Provided

Here’s another new ongoing series coming from Image. Grim Leaper is written by Kurtis Wiebe (Peter Panzerfaust) and drawn by Aluisio Santos, telling the story of Lou Collins, a man caught in a cyclical curse of gruesome deaths, who meets a girl named Ella suffering the same fate. As Image puts it, Grim Leaper is a love story to die for. How cute.

Additionally, every issue of Grim Leaper comes with a back-up story playing off the theme of “love at first sight.” The first back-up is actually written by IGN’s comic editor and our good friend, Joey Esposito.

New Deadwardians #3

No Caption Provided

The best book to come out of Vertigo’s newest wave of original series, New Deadwardians continues with its third issue this week. Inspector Suttle continues his investigation into the murder of a vampire by visiting Zone-B, the last refuge of the living.

If the cover is any indication, Suttle is in quite the pounding…

Peter Panzerfaust #4

No Caption Provided

It’s a Wiebe party this week! The fourth issue of Peter Panzerfaust hits stands, as Peter and the boys continue their journey to Paris. However, the group will come face to face with their great obstacle yet. If you haven’t bought into it already, Peter Panzerfaust is an imaginative take on the Peter Pan mythos you fondly remember, only with a Nazi twist. Meaning: it’s definitely worth checking out!

Ultimate Comics Ultimates #11

No Caption Provided

The torch passing begins with Ultimates #11. Writer Jonathan Hickman is joined by up-and-coming writer Sam Humphries, and artist Luke Ross to begin a new era for the Ultimates following “the People vs. the Children.”

Ultimates has been a pretty solid book these last few months, so if you looking for a book to jump aboard at the start of something new, this is it. It always feels good to be on the ground floor of something, right?

All great picks, and I agree that the New Deadwardians is the best new Vertigo book. Its a shame that it is not an ongoing.

The ultimates has been really good, but I'm not sure it's the best way to start the series. There's too much going on, people will get confused.

The Ultimates all the way. People really need to check this book out. It has been second only to Uncanny X-Force in my opinion. I will also be getting Batman Annual.

@ThexX: Agreed. Ultimates is a really great series, but people have not given it the shot it deserves. Only problem right now is that it's changing writers... let's see how that goes.

Yep. Only Marvel book I'm currently getting is Amazing Spider-Man, and I may look into fantastic Four or Daredevil.

Totally looking forward to Batman annual. That's pretty much it this week except for maybe Ravagers.

Hmmm. I have played around with the idea of reading this series. Perhaps I'll check it out.

None of these except for Batman Annual were on my radar. This may have to be rectified.

I love America Vampire but I've been reading them in trades so I won't be getting it but I wish I was if I had more money.

Its easy to pick a top ten list when there's only about 10 comics coming out this week anyways. LOL

Batman Annual ftw.

Incredible Hulk #8 could be on this list.

I checked Diamond.com, Marvel.com, and DC comics.com, and none of the comics are the same. One website (Diamond or DC) mentions Earth 2 and Action Comics and the other doesn't. So I am unsure what issues come out Wednesday,

I think I'll probably end up picking up Death by Design. Since I'm reading Batman in trade, I'll probably hold off on the Batman Annual, but the Animal Man Annual should be showing up in my pull.

That I did not know (I'm not reading Red Hood). I was under the impression the Bats annual would be his first appearance. Whoops.

@ArtisticNeedham: Action Comics & Earth 2 (I read both) come out next week. I can't wait! Along with those titles Batwing, Dial H, & JLI. The first of the month is always the best Wednesday for myself.

Issue 11 probably isn't the best jumping on point as there is a TON of stuff that has happened already, but it sure it good to see Ultimates finally get mentioned as one of the top 10 comics to buy for the week. Also Humphries helped write #10 too. I'm not too worried about changing the writer. I love Hickman, but its the concept that keeps me buying it. Ultimates is an Avengers story where anything can and does happen and as long as that remains and the focus remains on the core group, it'll be good.
