Arkkis Chummuck was an archivist from the planet Toomi IV. Toomi IV was set to invade their sister planet Xanshi. However, Toomi’s advances were stopped by Reever, the Green Lantern Corps member of sector 1313. Arkkis used information learned about the Green Lantern Corps to deduce their weakness to the color yellow. Using yellow armor, Arkkis defeated Reever, unintentionally killing him. As per his people's custom, he ate the Green Lantern's remains. Arkkis was chosen by Reever’s power ring to be worthy to join the Green Lantern Corps. Arkkis accepted the ring, and returned to his homeworld of Toomi IV where he used his new powers to force his people from further conquest, ending the war with Xanshi. However, his actions did not go unnoticed by the Green Lantern Corps’ chief prosecutor, Malet Dasim, who prosecuted Arkkis under the charge that he had murdered Reever and used his ring to conquer Toomi IV. Arkkis was put on trial on Oa. At the trial, Arkkis was defended by Reever's nest brother who stated that the Green Lantern acted nobly to end the war. Arkkis was acquitted and Malet Dasim was charged by the Guardians of the Universe to act as his supervisor while Arkkis learned the ways of the Corps. Arkkis became the Green Lantern of sector 3014.
Arkkis Chummuck made his debut in the pages of Green Lantern #130, published in July of 1980. Arkkis was just one of a number of Green Lanterns that debuted in the Tales of the Green Lantern Corps backup stories featured in Green Lantern throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. Written by Bob Toomey and illustrated by Alex Saviuk, the three-part story entitled “The Trial of Arkkis Chummuck” also featured a number of other well-known members of the Green Lantern Corps. Unlike some of the other Green Lanterns introduced in the Tales of the Green Lantern Corps backup feature, Arkkis’s unique origin helped him gain popularity, and as such he was featured other Green Lantern stories. Arkkis would also star in the three-issue Tales of the Green Lantern Corps mini-series before his death in the pages of Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Annual #1.
Note on Space Sector Discrepancies
In Arkkis’ first appearance, his home planet of Toomi IV and Xanshi are established as “sister planets.” However, Xanshi is later established as being in space sector 1313, while Toomi IV is established as being in space sector 3014.

With the Green Lantern Corps
Under Malet Dasim’s tutelage, Arkkis Chummuck became a critical member of the Green Lantern Corps. Arkkis was on Oa when rookie Green Lantern Hal Jordan first arrived for his training under Kilowog. Years later, when the Weaponers of Qward and their Anti-Green Lantern Corps attacked Oa, Arkkis was one of the Green Lanterns that aided Hal Jordan and Arisia in defending the Guardians.
Arkkis joined all 3600 members of the Green Lantern Corps when they were recalled to Oa to face the return of the evil Guardian Krona. Krona and his followers were actually resurrected by the death god Nekron, who was intent on destroying the entire universe. Hal Jordan led the Green Lantern Corps against Krona and his army, while the Guardians of the Universe focused on stopping Nekron. An initial strike by Krona caused the destruction of the Corps’ Central Power Battery, leaving the Corps only 24 hours to stop Krona. Arkkis joined Jordan, Galius Zed, Eddore and hundreds of other Green Lanterns in a first wave attack against Krona. Many Green Lantern Corps members died during the fight, and the first wave was defeated. The Corps and the Guardians made one last ditch effort to stop Krona and Nekron at Oa, where Jordan called upon the spirits of the dead Green Lanterns to aid in the fight. In the end, the Corps, with the aid of the Guardians, their deceased brethren and new member Tylot, defeated Krona and Nekron and rebuilt the Power Battery. As was due his culture, Arkkis tried to eat his dead brothers, but was prevented from doing so by the other Green Lanterns.
When Hal Jordan was exiled from Earth by the Guardians of the Universe, Arkkis was one of the Corpsmen that fought the decision, which resulted in Hal’s return to Earth. When Hal Jordan later decided to resign from the Green Lantern Corps, Arkkis was one of his comrades that tried to talk him out of it; and when Jordan’s ring went to John Stewart, Arkkis was on-hand to make sure Stewart lived up to Jordan’s reputation.
At one point, the evil Weapon-Master started siphoning off the energy from the Oan Central Power Battery. He gained the mental control of certain members of the Green Lantern Corps, including Arkkis Chummuck. The Guardians recruited Superman to help, aided by one of their host. Superman and the Guardian tried to bypass the controlled Corps members, led by Katma Tui, wearing yellow. The two failed and were captured, but Superman managed to break free and destroy the Weapon-Master’s device, freeing Arkkis, Katma and the other Green Lanterns.
The Death of Arkkis Chummuck
Arkkis Chummuck was one of the Green Lantern Corpsmen on Oa when Oa was attacked by a malicious entity. The entity used a white dwarf star fragment to drain Oa’s central power battery. Six Green Lanterns on Oa (Arkkis, Arisia, Ch’p, Katma Tui, Tomar Re and Xax) investigated the attack, only to find Maaldor the Darklord behind the attack. Maaldor had absorbed the power of the Oan power battery. During the final fight, Arkkis absorbed the energy from Maaldor, defeating him. However, the defeat cost Arkkis his life. One of the Guardians retrieved his ring to find a replacement Green Lantern.
Although there was no body seen during his death, a corpse was later retrieved and placed in the crypts beneath of Oa.
Even in death, the spirit of Arkkis Chummuck did not rest. Guy Gardner was the first Earth Green Lantern to stumble upon the crypts, when he pilfered the Yellow Power Ring from the dead body of Sinestro. Shortly after Zero Hour, a ringless Kyle Rayner fought Hal Jordan as Parallax on the then-decimated Oa. The fight carried over to the crypts beneath Oa, where Rayner used Arkkis’ coffin as a huge blunt weapon. Kyle eventually took his ring back from Jordan. Afterwards, when Jordan replaced Jim Corrigan as the Spectre, an alien race of energy beings approached Jordan in the guise of dead members of the Green Lantern Corps, including Arkkis. The energy race enlisted Jordan’s aid to defeat the conquering alien Quoex.
During the Blackest Night, Arkkis Chummuck was among many other fallen Lanterns raised by a Black Power Ring and become Black Lantern slaves of Nekron. The Black Lanterns assaulted Oa, with the Green Lantern Corps defending their home. Much of Oa was destroyed in the process. Many Green Lanterns lost their lives to the Black Lantern Corps. In the end, though, the combined forces of the various Lantern Corps stopped Nekron and the Black Lanterns. In the wake of Blackest Night, the Green Lantern Corps replace their crypts with a Tree of Life to remember their fallen comrades, including Arkkus Chummuck.
