Up Against The Wall Mother
Archer and Armstrong #1 was preceded by a #0 issue the previous month. The #0 issue told the origin story of Archer, a Harbinger with infallible aim much like Bullseye from Marvel. At the conclusion of that story Archer met and become entangled in the life of Armstrong who is in fact Aram brother of the Eternal Warrior. The two of them are being pursued by The Sect an organization that believes Armstrong is the devil and who are dedicated to the homeless alcoholics utter destruction..
The Story: Chapter Three of Unity opens where Eternal Warrior #1 left off, with Archer and Armstrong surrounded by the sect, when Gilad the Eternal Warrior suddenly appears...
Gilad recruits Armstrong and his new partner to aid Dr. Solar in his battle against Erica Pierce in the Lost Land.
Almost immediately after arriving, Archer, Armstrong and Gilad are cut off from the main group.
Armstrong is forced to fight, but would love to abandon the cause as soon as he can.
When the opportunity does present itself, Armstrong leads Archer away from the Battlefront.
After wandering a bit they are captured by Prelate Rejj of Erica's Forces.
It turns out Prelate Rejj is an "Archie" a member of a cult from 4001A.D. that worship Archer and his yet unwritten teachings. Prelate Rejj decides to keep Archer alive against orders if he will impart his wisdom. He has no compunctions about killing Armstrong however and has him held by Robot Guards in a courtyard. The Battle between Solar and Erica's respective forces raging around them.
When a passing Pterodactyl takes a massive crap on him, Armstrong uses the opportunity to burrow underground and to freedom. Unwilling to aid Solar's forces or risk death rescuing Archer he goes in search of a beer...
With the skill of an Immortal, Armstrong locates an underground "Speakeasy" and has a beer!
At the Speakeasy also is Prince Albert, "Son" of Erica Pierce.
Aram learns who Prince Albert is and begins to develop a plan. Meanwhile, Prelate Rejj is running out of Patience with Archer who is still his prisoner.
Solar and the rest of his allies continue to do battle with Erica's forces, but for Archer it appears time has run out!
At the last possible moment Prince Albert arrives and has Archer spared.
Entering into a strange alliance with Prince Albert, Archer & Armstrong journey to the heart of Erica's base.
Arming Archer with an Arrow capable of killing Erica, Prince Albert, Archer, and Armstrong close in for the kill..
Erica in their sights Chapter Three draws to an end.
Valiant's tight continuity is again on display in this issue. Along with gorgeous Art from Barry Windsor Smith.
Nothing negative to say.
The Verdict: 5/5:
When I first read this particular title I was put off by the humorous undertones but over time the brilliant writing and Art won me over. Like all Valiant V1 books it should not be missed.
