Aquaman lost his hand after he had his powers drained by Charybdis. He had it replaced with a harpoon hand that served as his primary melee weapon as well as his symbol during the 90s.
Powers and Characteristics
The Harpoon had three different versions. It did not affect Aquaman's mobility or speed (as stated during Aquaman v3. Aquaman trained with his new weapon and similarly to his skill with the Trident, Aquaman became an expert with it.
First version
The original was just a harpoon from Aquaman's past that he used against Superboy and Lobo, and got melted by the fire elemental of DC Earth, Corona.
Second version
The second version was an upgrade made by S.T.A.R. Labs that was far more durable. It could retract its two blades and was controlled telepathically by Aquaman. As a melee weapon, it was strong enough to pierce the hide of the Apokolyptian Demi-Gods, the Deep Six. It could also fire the harpoon that was connected to a cable at great distances and be used as a grappling hook (the cable was long enough to reach the top of a skyscraper or grapple flying angels) or a rope to restrain his opponents (it was able to restrain a flying Superboy). The harpoon could also be used as a drill that could drill through stone and metal alike. It could also be charged with energy (strong enough to distract Power Ring). This version was destroyed when the extremely powerful Atlantean warlord Noble yanked it out of Aquaman's arm.
In short the second Harpoon provided
- Melee Blades
- Grappling Hook
- Drill
- Energy Discharge
Third version
The third version was of Atlantean technology and was composed of liquid metal that could take any shape, was indestructible and controlled by Aquaman's telepathy. It could create any kind of blade or shield and even engulf Aquaman whole in protective armor. It also maintained all of the second version abilities. In addition it could take the form of a completely functional hand, that became its default form.
In short the third Harpoon provided
- Grappling Hook
- Drill
- Energy Discharge
- Liquid Metal Form (Blades, Shields, Armor)
- Hand Form
