An interesting Ending.
Jeff Lemire ends the New 52 Animal Man series with this final 29th issue. What does the future have in store for Buddy and his family? Nothing but good things!
The Good
New 52 has had A LOT of cancelations since it's conception. Remember Blue Beetle, Savage Hawkman, or Grifter? Yeah, totally forgot about those didn't you! While the writers hearts are in the right place, sometimes the character's stories don't catch on to readers of DC Comics. Names like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman make the big bucks at DC Comics and very rarely does a character like, Animal Man, actually get to compete with those popular DC Comic book character sales. However, as it is sad to say that Animal Man is canceled; at least it ended on a good note!
I'm not gonna lie, this is my first Animal Man issue I've ever read. Yeah, kinda sad I know. However, reading this last issue has actually made me want to pick up his prior issues. This final issue's story has Animal Man come to terms with all that's happened in his life during this 29 issue span. Animal Man at this point in his life has lost his son and is blaming himself for not being able to save him. Jeff Lemire's story for this issue can be summed up with two simple words; moving on. Animal Man has moved on past the lost of his son and his going to be the best superhero, husband, and father he can possibly be. Through Lemire's writing you can really tell the passion behind Animal Man needing to move on and how Jeff Lemire has an obvious love for his work.
To many that have read this series from start-to-finish, they will find this probably a boring final recap issue, but to the few that enjoyed this series; they will find this as a perfect ending!
The artwork by Jeff Lemire on pages 7-17 were really beautiful. His artwork is strange, but in a good way; it fits Animal Man's story like a glove! Also there was artwork by Travel Foreman whom also did a great job.
The Bad
For those who haven't followed Animal Man at all [like me], they will feel a bit confused [like me]. The first couple of pages do feel like they are dragged on for far too long, but after getting past the first three or so pages; you begin to settle into the story.
The Verdict
Animal Man; taken from the New 52 DC universe too soon. Though it was a terrific last issue, I'm also sad to see this series leave. From this issue I've read it looks like the series had a lot of potential of breaking new ground in terms of Animal Man's character. 4 out of 5. All I can say is "Goodnight."
