Hank and the boys have found the vamps they've come to the Island to exterminate, actually it'd be more apt to say they've found them.
The Good
I've been loving these "Rising Sun" covers for this arc. This one is especially intriguing considering the action Pearl takes this issue.
This issue starts off with a bang as Henry and the boys fight and run for their lives. They're easily outnumbered by this unknown, feral breed of vamp and you feel every bit as desperate and adrenaline addled as they do while reading it. Albuquerque really shines during the beginning of this book. His action sequences are chaotic and perfectly capture the pandemonium of the battle field. This series is very character driven and heady, so it's nice to take a break from that and see some good ol' grimey physical confrontation.
Pearl begins her journey to rescue Henry, and as her plane leaves Hobbes makes a very interesting phone call. Everything seems to be going according to his plan. What exactly is Hobbes' endgame this time? I smell conspiracy afoot
After some help form the locals Henry's unit regroups to assess just how passionately life's making prison love to them. They all agree on one thing and that's this is a vamp unlike any they've ever faced before. Johnny was bitten last issue and now he's full on mole vamp. Just minutes after being bitten these things turn you. And these are by far the creepiest vamps to grace the pages of this comic. Imagine the product of Riddley Scott's Alien mating with a Kabutops. Now imagine that the byproduct of that unholy union then birthed a monstrosity fathered by Dhalsim. Now take it one step further and consider that said abomination desperately wants to cannibalize you. Did I mention it's also naked? Cuz yeah, it's definitely naked and coming for you, full head of steam. Their gaunt bodies, gaping maws and eyeless skulls like heads are truly what with serve as the building blocks of my future nightmares. Thanks Rafael, no really...I was getting tired of not waking up in sweat soaked terror and screaming incoherently.
The boys learn from the natives that the Japanese may be behind the sudden influx of the indigenous vamps and they set off to investigate. Like these situations are want to, things don't go so well for them...at all.
The Bad
This book felt really, really hefty so I thought I was getting more main story or a free backup feature. Turns out I was half right. There's an 8 or 9 page mini comic to promote Super 8. It was pretty cool and a very unique advertising tool, BUT it comes in the middle of the issue and really breaks the flow of the story. It would've been a much better decision to place it after the main story ended and just run the regular one page add in it's place.
The Verdict
BUY THIS COMIC!!!
This issue was tense and action packed and the ending had me wishing I fast forward time a month to see what's coming next. If you haven't been reading American Vampire now is the perfect time to jump aboard. This arc's been money from day one and it's only getting better.
