The Darkness and the Ghost

Both stories in this issue of All Star Western delivered suspense, drama, action and violence, the likes of which we have come to expect out of this series. We see both character development and devolution as each deals with increased hardship. I believe this book will leave you both satisfied with regards to plot progression and a desire to pick up its next installment. I know I am eager to find out what's next!

The Darkness - A great continuation on this multi-issue arc. As expected Jonah is written perfectly, both to deal with the turmoil set before him and his "partner" on this adventure. It is here we really start to see the good doctor's character devolve under extreme pressure. The dialog, interaction and cercumstance fit perfectly with how I believe this would truly play out (given certain suspensions of disbelief here and there). The ONLY issue I had with this story was how much disbelief I had to suspend watching Arkham's glasses stay put - they clearly are more resilient than their wearer.

The Ghost - We learn a great deal more about the Tsen family's tragedy in this, part two of the story. The torment of the protagonist is only matched with the horrific happenstance she is meant to endure. Thus, all the violence and anger doled out by Yan Mei in the first part are certainly justified as we see more of the back-story unfold. Surprisingly, this story will last at least another issue, as Yan Mei continues to hunt down the evil that has forsaken her family. This kind of story is truly haunting. It illustrates all the horrible conditions and situations people had to deal with on a daily basis as new arrivals to a land they thought would bring them peace - never suspecting it instead would leave them in pieces.

Big fan of these westerns so far but I didn't like the hex story in this one. Despite being only half of the comic, I always feel quite a lot has happened and the story has taken us somewhere but this one seemed to fall short of the others. Barbary ghost story has been ok so far but this is not the main attraction for me.

Something I haven't talked about much when reviewing this series, but should not go unappreciated, is the wide variety of accents portrayed. Different classes of people have different slang or shortenings. Lots of extra apostrophes and shortened words really bring the dialogue to life, especially when Jonah Hex, Amadeus Arkham, and some big thug are all having one conversation. The voices ring loud and clear in my head with such brilliant variety, it really helps me gauge what they sound like by...

We pick up where we left off, with Hex and Arkham battling the Gotham underground. The action gets off to a fast start as Hex attempts to fight his and Arkham's way to safety, and we get the usual play-by-play through Arkham's point of view, which observations have become one of the more enjoyable staples of this series. The writing here is solid, doing a good job of carrying through sequences with a fluidity that makes it seem as if the reader is experiencing Arkham's thoughts in the context of w...
