The Greatest Superman Story Ever Told
I've always really liked Superman but I wouldn't say I was a fan. I know him mostly from the Justice League shows, Superman: The Animated Series and the DC Animated movies (which are all great!) and I've always thought he was one of the greatest superheroes ever created. The fact that the most powerful being in the world, alone in our planet, still chooses to help out humanity which in most cases, people with that much power would have just gotten "power-hungry". That's just one of the things that makes him special and this book proves that and more.
Now, I've never read a solo Superman book and a friend of mine who's a Superman fan has told me numerous times that All Star Superman is a must. "You have to read this!" he says, "If you have to read one Superman book, it has to be this one!" I have to say, I was intrigued. Also for the fact that it was written by Grant Morrison. Now, I'm a Batman fan and Morrison's run on Batman was great! But this book... I will go there and say this has to be Grant Morrison's greatest work.
This book is full of imagination, it made me think: he's Superman, why shouldn't he live a fascinated life?
Reading this book was like reading a comic from the Silver Age, it's silly and it's fun BUT at the same time it's deep and full of emotion. Episode 10 has to be my favorite; he's dying and he's sick but he still wants to make the world a better place before he goes. Amazing.
And I have to mention, the art is so beautiful. It took me a while to finish this book because I would spent about 10 minutes just staring at each page, admiring Frank Quitely's art and Jamie Grant's colors.
Anyone who tells me that "Superman is too powerful" or "He's not relatable" or blah, blah, blah. I just want to throw them this book! There's no way in heck you can say that after reading this! In Episode 6 we see how HUMAN he really is...
ALL 12 issues are in this book so it's a little pricey but well worth it (though you can get it a little cheaper on Amazon. wink, wink)
I absolutely love this book and it's definitely one of my favorite graphic novels. I feel bad for the next Superman book I read, because this book set the bar really high.
Like my friend told me, "If you have to read one Superman book, it has to be this one!"
