The Devil May Care

Albert is a disaffected teen that is unhappy about everything in his life, and strikes out in anger against anything around him. He hangs out with the local Grendel clan, led by Hack, which runs the Indianapolis 5000 race, the biggest event in the region. But even within the violent, angry ranks of the Grendels, Albert still doesn't fit in, and gets picked on.

His mother is Dana, the director of the local hospital. They have a poor relationship, with Albert theoretically living at home but really just showing up drunk to grab some food from the refrigerator every once in a while. Dana tries to keep a bond with him, but they usually end up shouting at each other.

Dana eventually starts a romantic relationship with Hack, and asks him to make sure Albert isn't accepted by the Grendels. Hack agrees, and has their champion racer, Malka, challenge Albert to a race. Albert loses badly, and leaves the group out of shame. But this only makes things worse. Now, instead of hanging out with a bunch of violent thugs, Albert wants to destroy them, the race, and his mom, whose relationship with Hack he has discovered.

The next time the Grendels get drunk and go out to wreck the town for fun, Albert lays in wait. He shoots six of them, creating a mystery and paranoia in town. No one knows who could do this against the powerful clan. Next, he sets a bomb at the hospital, blowing up a wing.

He goes into hiding, and soon his friends Pug and Coney join him. They let the paranoia increase. Other kids join, and Albert tends to bully them into submission, calling them cowards if they don't agree with his vision. Soon people start to wonder if vampires are behind it, and there are worries about whether the upcoming race will be safe. When the other clans show up for the race, Albert and Coney kill the favorite racer, Kill Martin, to create even more chaos. In their escape, they are almost caught, and Albert kills Coney to slow down the pursuit. Nothing and no one really matter to him any more.

Hack is deposed as leader due to his perceived weakness. Albert and his friends attack the race itself, setting off a bomb and shooting many of the racers and Grendels. Then Albert does to the hospital, where he once again sets off a bomb. He catches his unconscious mother and confronts Hack, shooting him in the leg. Dana wakes up and grabs Albert's gun, and shoots him in the head, killing him. Then she shoots herself and Hack, believing they have no future after what Albert has done.
