Sweethearts
At issue 2, the new Adventure Comics was still in its infancy, but still wonderful. At the top of Johns' agenda in writing Superboy back into mainstream DC, he must reconcile Conner's relationships with his former teammates. At the risk of sounding silly I say this. This is a very sweet book. That's not to say that Adventure Comics is sugary tales of Conner and Krypto frolicking and eating Ma Kent's pie, but it is enjoyable and fairly light. There are some big issues explored and conflict does exist, but the tone of Adventure Comics is one that makes for a refreshing change from some of the more somber elements often more popular in American comics. The Legion backup was the only real weak point. While I liked the fairly new reader friendly story from issue 1, this one felt a little convoluted and all over the place. It set up a nice cliffhanger that unfortunately won't be addressed in the next issue, and I'm a little unhappy about the jumping around in the telling of the Legion's stories. While it can't be easy to confine it to so small a pace, maybe 2000 AD should be the model on how to do this more effectively. In any case, great issue, and the creative team continues to impress.
